We've had a lot of wing and/or empennage crops on some of these due to scanner/scale measurement wrong on most thing done, some worse than others. The wall displays are looking amazing, I'm really digging the red coals in the display as well as the nearly seamless transition to mural from 3D! |

Update 10/7 Frantic Friday Edition!
I'm missing about half my crew today for away games in Volleyball, Football, and Cross-country. We are discussing where all the animals are going to go after we are done with the details. We are trying to make sure we don't end up covering up cool spots in our mural.  More burned trees on our blackened hillside. Our 4" 1/18th scale action figures that we were going to use as our hot shot crew disappeared during delivery and now shows not available from Amazon(we got a refund).  We will have to find What we re-ordered today.  They will be walking up this hillside.    Our rockmix finally showed up, so we can work on the bottom of our fire tier.  The stonework on the bottom of our tower is going pretty slowly. We are working on doing it a bit more efficiently. Hopefully we get this side done today.  Our C-130 is still getting laid out. We started to place the bulkheads yesterday, but the beginning is slow, as we check to make sure each is in the right place, and the size is the right scale for the spot it is supposed to be. We had to adjust "B" already, as it was 1/4" too big all the way around. We think that happened because of the pixilation when projecting it up on the whiteboard to trace. The rest seem to be correct. We are going to mount this onto the wall, so we are using the same 45 degree cuts on the 2x6 and 2x4, so they mate and hold it to the wall. The 2x6 will be the plate mounted to the wall. The 2x4 will be our spine. We will probably screw them together so they do not warp over time while we work on them.  |

Update 10/10
Parent/Teacher Conferences addition. Tonight and tomorrow night, 5-8pm. The mural work is exceeding my expectations.....and thst makes me worry about covering too much of it with the animals and 3D elements that are yet to come. I guess that is a good problem to have.    These are some of the 3D rocks that will help fill the composition. They will get texture and paint soon.  Our forest fire tier is close to ready for stain. Students were adding some texture details today.  And....more rock mix.  Our Sparks556 action figure....now with mohawk ...combed down.  These are almost complete.  Our life-size firefighter is still growing his beard. The new reference pics I grabbed this weekend helped a lot.  The C-130 fusage is going well. As expected there were some minor differences in measurements when using the model and the printout blue print. We measured about 3 different times to make sure we have the bulkheads in the right place. We still had a few problems arise.  Once we had those in place we started figuring out what we needed to fill it in. We started with the wing roots.  We cut out more of C and D frames, and will fill in more tomorrow. Installing the wing root contours will help us align the D frames.  |

Update 10/11
Night 2 of parent teacher conferences. Little lighter traffic than last night. Our B-26 is all ready for some paint. I've moved the builder to the 1/6th scale version, as I need his abilities.  Sparks got his mohawk helmet, and rigging will go on tomorrow.   Our C-130 saw good progress today. We added our D bulkheads to define the landing gear door edges and outside contours. From there we added the wing root contours.   With both inside about outside root faces, we were able to start figuring out what the transition from the fuselage to the wing will look like.  Tomorrow we hope to start filling in the rest of the bulkhead frames.  |

Update 10/14
No school today. Hunting season in many areas opens tomorrow. I'll have to round up some photos from students who have harvested elk already. Some nice bulls. We fleshed a big sunofagun this week in class. We are close on our life-size firefighter. The beard still needs work and we need to make some ears.  Sparks with his combed down mohawk got most of his rigging.  Our murals continue to get more detailed.     There will be a 3D waterfall/creek here.   We found that our projected template was about 1/2" off all the way around for our "E" plate.  It became noticeable when we started looking down the fuselage. We double checked using the 1/48 scale model.   I had to leave Wed. afternoon for a dental appointment. Yesterday when I walked in, I found our corrected "E"......more corrected. We made a new, new one yesterday   We are now working in the frames between E and F, near the tail of the plane.

Update 10/18
A Shakespeare in the Schools play yesterday, and ACT testing today is putting a hurt on our progress this week. We are getting some nice details emerging from our murals.  We are still adjusting our forest fire tier in colors on the rocks, but we are ever closer to done, if I can keep my students from adding more texture after we remove some of it. We have a slight disagreement about texture in some areas, and my leadership tends to do their own thing when I leave the room for a bit, then don't even bother to come up with an excuse, other than.....we did what we want.  We were well on our way to getting the second side of our rock base done, but students were not happy with the results and started over. There was a theme yesterday.  Our C-130 frame continues to get filled in. Stringers are getting close in our process. We need to figure out how we are going to flesh out our landing gear pods.  These supports are helping to make sure our bulkheads are all the same distance at the bottom, top, and middle. It will also give us a bit more structural integrity when we remove the wall mounting plate(2x6).  |

Update 10/19
We have a group of administrators from around the state(NCAA visit) coming through today. It's always fun to watch the reaction on their faces when they see the displays for the first time, and the chaos in my classrooms as it happens. We are realizing where are problems are in our initial fuselage frame are. We did not see how square the back end of the C-130 gets after the aft portion of the wing root; maybe even somewhere in-between the start and finish of the root. With the frames up to the beginning of the tail, it's more obvious of our problem areas. We are fixing them one bulkhead at a time. We had to cut off some of the mounting plate and add a section of 2x2 and a 1/2" plate to our tail, so we can get it up above where the bottom of the tail ends. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense typing it out, but you will understand with the coming pictures.    Checking for continuity of line across the top.  Creating the squareness of the bottom of the frames near the beginning of the cargo door on the aft of the plane. Not having a CAD drawing to do this is not great, but it does make the students work to see all of the minor differences in contour lines.  We still need to adjust the second to last frame. We think there is too much material on top, and not enough on the bottom.   We are leaving these areas open at the top, so we can drive the 6" construction screws into the mounting plate.  More paint on our murals, and above the firefighter tier.  Our creek bed. Eventual 3D elements will be added here, after we get the otters back up where we feel they need to be. I bought new anchors yesterday so we can move things around a bit on the wall  Blending the close up areas of our mural to distant images is a challenge to the students. I remind them that this is more symbolic or poetic, than pure realism, and the transitions can be less realistic if needed.  We are slowly finishing the corner above where our hotshot crew will be. They got reordered, and might be here by the end of the month. Maybe.  |

The high tail of the C-130 (and most other modern cargo aircraft) comes from paletizing cargo, and the C-130 tail has to be high enough for a truck to back up to the loading ramp and roll pallets directly from the truck into the plane. The C-130 can also lower the ramp all the way to the ground and drive on small vehicles or even light artillery. Compare this to pictures of airmen loading C-47s in the 2nd WW, box by individual box.

The C-130 can also lower the ramp all the way to the ground and drive on small vehicles or even light artillery. Compare this to pictures of airmen loading C-47s in the 2nd WW, box by individual box. Trivia that would make a good "Did you know" screen on the display summary/build tour tablet on a little pedestal there. Not sure about anchoring a pole to the concrete to hold a tablet though, that might be going too far. We've been running into a little pushback from the district admin and tech teams on installing our displays.  I think we got approval to get one installed, and see if it works as we are hoping. My principal has been doing his best to get these installed. It's not a building level problem that we are running into.

Update 10/20
The tail of a C-130 is HUGE  We started mapping out on our model where it needs to be. We think we can get the vertical portion built up without having to make it removeable.   The vertical length is shown here. We will add the rest of the outside shape of it today.  We finally have a system that seems to be working on our rock base of our tower. This is side #3, and we will probably have all 4 sides done by tomorrow.   The slurry mural is getting more and more details.  We have one more ear to go on our life size portrait, and some hair, even though my artist is going to argue he will have a helmet on. She is very happy with how this is turning out, and I agree.

Update 10/21 Frantic Friday=speed art, 30min classes
 We finally recieved our "Mech maintenance team" action figures, who will be painted up to be our hot shot crew. Something was a little off with one of the figures......like their top. Non CoC-9 compliant. I guess that is what the "?" mark on the box meant.The student who opened them got a laugh, and she said she would cover up things with an epoxy t shirt.   In our display room, we worked to get paint over where our life size firefighter would be standing.  More painted rocks in our mural.   We began prep work to get our forest fire landscape tier mounted up on the wall. Students marked where the mounting plates would be attached. Our custodian should have the plates mounted up today.  Things moved out of the way for the lift.  Our glass bear back up on his perch, and we just hung our otter up for now to get him out of the way.  We began working on the tail profile, and found the online CAD drawings limited, so we took a close up of the 1/48 scale model, and projected it up on the wall, then traced and cut out a patter to work from.   We thought this was the way...... it was.....one of about 3 different attempts.   This is how we decided was the best way to get an accurate result. There was arguing, yelling, name calling, and hurt feelings, but I survived.   |

Update 10/24
We have begun laying out our smokejumpers cloud platform. This will hold our motor and axle for reeling up and down our action figure smokejumpers.  We moved things around in our display area so we could get the mounting plates up for our forest fire tier installed. We need to get some paint up there before we the tier put up on the wall, but I'm hoping we get that done today.  More work on our mural details.   With the forest fire tier about ready to go up, we started messing with more 3D flames to attach to the trees. He's heating up the lexan, then pulling it with tweezers to get his desired shape and form.  Our tail contour is looking pretty good. We are going to define it a bit more, then start reinforcing it in areas where the rudder should be.

Update 10/25
Well, we had our tail profile all up and done, and we discovered it was a little offset, and the 1x2 running down to the spine was going to be too thick. We had to rework that a bit. We did define our rudder line.   We also started roughing out the exterior contours of the tail assembly.  With our mounting plates up on the wall, we got some paint on the area in preparation of hanging the forest fire terrace.  Then we hung the platform up on the wall. It went pretty darn well, other than getting the lift in just the right spot with the lion and desks in the way.   Preparing for the tree install, we need more paint behind the hill. I also ordered LED landscape spot lights to put behind our trees and light up our "fire".  We finished the rock on the base of our Sheep Mountain Lookout tower, and started to get that installed around the pole. We need to do a bit of shimming today to make sure everything it tight before bringing down the tower for install. We will then work on the roof and details of the tower.  She's got our hotshot crew doing pushups in preparation for going to work.  We need to add some hair, and clean up the right ear, but we are ever closer to letting the portrait dry out. They eyebrows aren't nearly as thick as this picture shows.  Today should be another pretty productive day.
