I think you may want to consider some way of "glassing" off your tower stairwell. Maybe box it in with some thin plexiglass or the like. Otherwise, you're going to wind up with students leaving all sorts of garbage on the landings. Cups, water bottles, gum wrappers, etc.
I'd also suggest that it be easy to open, because someone is going to find a way to get something in there through whatever seam there is and you'll want to be able to get it out. |

It might happen, but there are so many other places in the displays for similar problems, that worrying about it on this one is kind of pointless. Students respect the projects for the most part, and we have very little problem with that kind of thing. |

Update 10/5
More rocks have been painted. We need to get our landscape tier into the corner soon, as we already are going to have some work covered by the tier, and I don't want them to paint details that will get covered over. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094RJ41WY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1 We are close to ready to attach these displays to the walls. We will then add finer details that will get crushed if we do them now. There will probably be some blending of colors in the landscape to make the walls and 3D tiers match. This blending of the background to the wood pile seems to be going well. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Our ceramic mountain birds ...... This young man is just trying to piss me off with the flicker..... they put holes in my cabin and he knows it. This is the base of our tower. We are perfecting our method right now. More railings. I think they are all done with them, and are finishing up the glass on the top before we go down to install the tower around the pole. Finishing up "Sparks556" ink. Beard, and hair color will happen today. Some work on our fireman's face. We are getting there. Making the beard out of clay is a steep learning curve. It will come together as she gets more confident with it. We are cutting out our frames and bulkheads for the C-130. Once we have these few, we should be able to start figuring out the rest. We had a slight 1/48 scale C-130 crash yesterday. We need to fix a few things, mostly propeller blades. And this was just cool, and thought I should share. Nice scratchboard done by one of my better young artists. |

The color palette looks like something from Tinted Graphite pencils from Derwent, and by the gallon instead of by the pencil trace. The colors the tinted graphite allows for is basically mountain landscapes, all very muted. If you have the choice, stick with watercolor colored pencils instead. For my 2nd year kids we use a very expensive clayboard. It's a masonite board with a white clay coating, then a fine black coating over top. The 14x18" each cost about $17. They allow incredible detail. My beginners use a cheap paper version that works, but is no where near as nice. They each cost about $1.30. They work, but can tear easily, and sometimes details can get slightly rougher |

Do you get the white clayboard then cover in India ink (or other coating) for the black (and a bit of undo option as well) and/or use watercolor steps to add another dimension? When starting with a black or neutral gray paper is when one realizes we have a ton of ways to make something darker, and not a whole lot to make a dark surface lighter, short of opaque paints and pens. Easiest is "White Charcoal" (aka Chalk) to go lighter, but gives same problem as scratchboard, can't go anywhere other than white, or not white forcing dithering to be used (stippling/hatching/etc). The only thing I know (outside of opaque paint) that can work on black paper nearly as well as white with color are the jaw dropping expensive Caran d'Ache colored pencils or tinted charcoal to get a couple grey levels toward white or black which can be combined. Looking at the wiikpedia article on scratchboarding there's this amazing example. Ray traced quality image with watercolor used to color the sunflower in, very amazing work! |
