We discussed rivets and how many there would be on the C-130 this afternoon.  

There were many rivets veterans who declared they weren't doing them this year and that was 1st year art student work.

It's been a couple of years.  

Update 10/26  

We began adding foam to the nose of our C-130 yesterday.    We are discussing how much to use and if we want the cockpit detailed, and how detailed.    It would be much easier to have foam going all the way back past the cockpit glass to our "B" bulkhead, but that would cause a problem for the lower floor of our cockpit details.   I'm not sure what we will do yet.   The thin stringers might work to get our profile, but they tend to not allow for the subtle contour changes that we need to see.



Our Senate Page has a weird thing for shaping the foam.    He loves it; even with all of the debris that ends up all over you.






We started our tower install yesterday.   There were little hicups in getting it around the pole, and we will need a little work on our walls at the top, but it is on the base.




We found a bit of twisting in our tower, once up around the pole, so each platform will need to be shimmed to get it as square as we can around the pole.
We should be finishing that today.




We began planting our trees up on our forest fire landscape, but we had to check photos for position, as we got a bit confused.  It's been a while since we had them installed.






We began installing the stringers yesterday on our fuselage.   We need to cut a few more today that are full length, 8ft, so we can lay out a few more notches.   Students are measuring in between each set up bulkheads to make sure they are square to each other and not warping inward, or outward.


These should help us define a few of the more overt body lines on the C-130.

Update 10/28  Frantic Friday schedule

We are missing many today for football playoffs and regional volleyball today.   We are going to be a skeleton crew in many classes today.

We continue to shape the nose of our C-130, but we got a little too aggressive in one spot and will have to reshape it.   We just cut out the foam and will add a new piece to shape again.


She is so thrilled.....  
 She has been spending much of her free time down here getting a lot of work done.   She has been sneaking out of "homeroom" class every day to come down here and keep the project on task.   She is a huge asset this year.


We are laying out the stringers, trying to use them as a way to create the proper contours, as well as have someplace to attach the skin to the fuselage.




Careful work around our mountain lion mount.  We don't want to remove it as its a bit unwieldly and I'm not sure where we'd put it.  


We worked more on getting our trees up and straight.   There was a bit of trouble finding the holes we drilled earlier, but they managed to get it worked out.




Now we begin figuring out our 3D flames and what they need to look like.   Attaching them will also be a bit of a challenge.  


These guys are pretty amazing and have been making sure our tower and fuselage are assembled with attention to details.   They are squaring each level as they go.   We've got a lot of details to touch up along the way, but it will be solid, secure, and square.  




We noticed a bit of a problem on our firefighter and had to rework some details on the right eye.  That set us back a day or two.  I'm glad we caught it before it was dried and ready to fire....often, that's when something so subtle is finally noticed.   Sideburns are also on the list of things that need completed.  


We are working on our 3D waterfall segments.   These will be flowing around our 3D rocks on our mural.  This was our first attempt.  


We also had a few of our crew members break off for a few days to put together these two goats.   They worked long hours for a couple days to get these set.   Over the next week, they will detail further, as they dry out.  I've been told "we" are doing a moose next.  One of my students got a nice bull last week, and she wants to do this with her brother, also one of our crew members who worked on the goats.  

That's pretty awesome.  

Update 10/31

Students are transitioning to different projects this week.   We will have some coming back that worked on the project 3-4 weeks ago, and a few who are going to start some individual projects and take a break from the C-130 and Display room.

Our tail contours are closer to finished now.  


Our former SRO officer came by today for a visit.   He worked heavily with us on the Stagecoach, years ago.   He jumped right in and helped the students where they needed him.  



Looking more like a C-130 every day.


We began work on painting up our flames for the fire.   We need a lot more smaller examples, and started working on those today.

We need some adjustment on stances, but our hotshot crew finally getting glued to the burn area.  We need to add tools, packs, and accessories, but the paint kept rubbing off with movement, so we got them at least glued down for now.

You'd have to ask him, but he is a very experienced officer, and a very good shot.  I've shot with him.  

That top picture looks like he's building an easel to paint on  instead of an airplane tail for some reason.

Update 11/2/22

We have some taxidermy that is drawing off a few of our crew members, helping to flesh large capes, preparing for our pickling process.   Couple nice bulls shot by crew members this year.  We also have a moose that is taking up much of our work space at the moment.   It was also shot by one of our crew members.  



Working on "hair"   She isn't happy as she keeps telling me, "It will be under his helmet!!!!"    Still doing it.  State swimming starts today, so she will be gone the rest of the week.  


We flipped the fuselage down on it's side so we can work on the stringers along the bottom.  We also need to work on creating the contours of the landing gear housing.




When looking and measuring more closely, we noticed that these landing gear pods do not go all the way across the bottom of the fuselage.  We recontoured the two frames and cut them to be closer to what our 1/48 scale model is showing.


We also added another frame in the middle, as it is needed when trying to curve the stringers across the form and create a flat surface on the side.  We should be able to cut out the center today.

Update 11/3

We are continuing to paint more details into our mural.   More work is taking place under our mountain lion mount.  We are trying to get this area detailed so we can bring mounts and more details back in.


Our fire area got a bit more paint on it yesterday afternoon.


We moved one of our otters back into the display today, and placed some of our 3D rocks near him.  We need to make a few/many more.


We are making 3D water elements to go around the rocks and create the look of a waterfallish area.

Our table is finally rid of the moose cape.   It is up drying, then time for the pickle.

My God, your students actually KILL defenseless animals and then mount their heads as trophies?   How can evil like that exist, your students are probably granted power from the devil to do the other work because you don't protect every bit of wildlife around you!   This isn't the 1800s, such barbaric behavior is only a sign of students that will likely shoot up the school or something.  

This disgusting proud display of violence is why we banned all but the purest (and cheapest) arts from our Real Public Education System so the kids can instead learn about the necessities of the Greater Good instead of wasting their time playing with paint, sculpture in real life, digital art is all that is allowed so we can shove other ideas in their heads as we are told to!

Update 11/4

Huge THANK YOU! to @Rocketman89408 .   My students and I very much appreciate the gift box with safety glasses.  



It's too funny watching them open the box.  It's like Christmas to them.  






The comment first out of the box was....."These are SO CLEAR!!!!"  
We very much needed some new pairs.  Thank you again!


My painters are still cleaning up details around our burning wood pile.


We began adding "3D flames" to our forest fire area of the display.   We get quite a few up, but it was obvious we needed more, and larger examples.   We are working on making more.


The spot lights work, but we decided to add a string of LED lights up to weave around some of the flames and trees.   We are going to make sure those are mostly hidden.  I'm hoping when we add smoke, the lights will reflect off of that more and enhance the scene a bit more.   We need to get all the flames in place before we start adding smoke.


We are making a bunch more 3D rocks for our creek/waterfall.   Foam glued to plywood, then shaped and covered with rock mix and stain.

We ran out of foam today, so I will grab another sheet on Monday.  Students are working to describe the contours of the landing gear housing pods.  


One of our little ceramic bird sculptures is coming along well.  


Our taxidermist in training that will be doing the moose, brought in a kiddy pool to create a large enough area for the pickle process.  Put this under things I didn't think I'd see in my art room.


It still was a bit tight getting it in there with 20 gallons of pickle brine, and having the whole cape covered/soaking.    

For those who remember and supported Nora after her accident last spring, she turned in a wonderful duck stamp painting today.   It's been very challenging for her this fall with her TBI.  She had to have some fluid drained from her brain again last week.   She's been doing very well with all these challenges, and her painting turned out so well.   For me as an educator, it's been interesting watching her brain relearn how to process feedback and incorporate her interpretations of that feedback into her work.  

We haven't messed with the lights yet.   They have strobe modes, but I think we are limited to what colors we get in that mode.   I'll have them play with the modes next week.  

We still have the projection lights we used for the Unicorns, so many years ago.   We might pull one of those and see if we can use it here.

Update 11/8  

We have a new crop of painters joining our mural team.   They are excited.  


Blending the light on our rocks from our fire area to our stream area.


A little more paint above our terrace and we will be able to put our elk back up on the wall.


We had to get more foam to continue the landing gear pods on our C-130.   We had to remove some of our original foam, and will take another shot at it over the next few days.  


We are adding some scars to our firefighter's forehead.  He had an accident in his youth.    For some strange reason, my artist thought this was extremely pleasing to do.




I rounded up one of the lights donated by ARFCOM to our Unicorn display while it was down at State Art.  It was right where I left it, something not always true in the Art room.    It took a bit of playing around to find the remote, and a battery to make it work, but we got it projecting orange and reds.   It will add a bit of movement to our flames with "sparks" rising up from the fire.


I need to get better video.  It's more obvious than shown in the video.

Update 11/10

We are still making more 3D rocks, and then painting them for our 3D stream.    We also began painting the water elements yesterday with stained glass spray paint, giving it just a slight green/blue tint.


We are still cutting out pieces for our "fire" and "water" features.  


Our painting above our trees is still ongoing, with continued tweaking of colors, values, and strokes.




Our Hotshot crew got a helmet, and backpacks yesterday.  We will have to work on getting the flaps down on the packs, and getting their stances a bit more adjusted.


On our C-130 we are working on the tail section, trying to form out the horizontal stabilizer root.   We think we may have a plan, and will start on that today.




We are still roughing out the landing gear pod forms.   I've tasked one class and crew to handle this, as we were getting differing plans, which resulted in too many reworks.  Some of our other crews weren't real happy, but understood why we were going to go this route.


Our crew began filling in smaller voids in our nose area, and even used a bit of bondo yesterday.     We then added papermache over top.   This will be sanded and adjusted with thin coats of bondo.




Finally, we decided to make sure everthing fit out the doorway.   We knew the width wasn't a problem, but when combined with the length, and the angle we have to go out the door, it made good sense to try it out.  We are good.

Some days in the Art room ......


This is his lunch hour, but he's in here removing excess foam from around the cockpit.  




I reminded him we have a face shield now.......
I went back in a few minutes later and he has an improvised drill bit for removing the foam.




It's probably the storm going through, but he was making "Foam Angles" in his mess.
