The thing that made me discover it, crappy grade jerky like Slim Jims.

In a related note there used to be a snackpack for sell at Dollar General that was small pieces of Slim Jims and Ritz Bits cheese (one of those may have been the generic version) but they are an excellent combo together.  It was definitely worth it the first time, but not the second.

I have been using Sports Research Tart Cherry Concentrate gelcaps from Amazon for about 4 years. Two caps a day. When I feel like an attack is coming on I double the dose. 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. Seems to knock it down really well.
I have no idea what my trigger foods are, if any. I have been eating pretty healthy for several years which I'm sure helps. I do believe hydration is very important. I got dehydrated back in October during a case of diverticulitis due to the gastric distress. Felt the gout coming in my right foot. Loaded up on the tart cherry caps, electrolytes, and water. It never went full on. Faded away overnight.

Recently diagnosed with gout and currently on a steroid pack trying to get it back under control. It appears alcohol is my trigger thus far.

Anyone have a alcohol trigger and still able to have a beer or cocktail everyone once and a blue moon?

I had a margarita and two beers 2 weeks ago and my next Morning sucked as my wrist and left food were killing me

I was working a high-stress job and living off of Tylenol, Rolaids, and Coors beer. The attacks were back to back. I took Allopurinol for about six months, cut out the beer for that time and all was well again. My only other trigger was beef liver and I have avoided that for 20+ years. Talk to your doctor, it can be beaten.

Thank you. I’m currently in between Drs. I had a few words with my last Dr (his nurse) over this and decided I’ll never go back to them again. I went to a local Clinic and the Dr looked at what my last Dr gave me (colchicine, idomethacin, & prednisone) and was absolutely confused on why he would do that. He’s felt the DR and the pharmacist should have know that combo wasn’t great for my stomach. He put me back on prednisone and I’m currently working through that pack.

I have a appointment with a new PCP who can hopefully recommend me a specialist to nail down what’s causing this. I have cut out drinking 100% but would prefer to be able to drink again so I want to down my triggers and treatments.

I pretty much cut out alcohol 4 weeks ago, soda and I am working hard to reduce carbs/sugar but mostly failing. Probably never touch seafood alfredo again. I'll roll the dice on fried walleye though. I drink more water too fwiw.

Got on allopurinol and have the cholicine(sp) on standby. I had 3 flare ups back to back and since then i have had one beer (today) and a shot of bourbon last saturday.

I am pretty irritated that I am gaining weight (242 at 6') even after these changes in diet.

I forgot to add this to my previous post.

For guys with stress triggers, be careful if your doctor provides you with steroids to treat your flare ups.

I was prescribed 3-5 day doses of prednisone about 5-6 times over a 2yr period. The combination of cortisol from stress and the prednisone tore a hole in the back of my left retina and caused a PED. I narrowly dodged reparative laser eye surgery to close the hole and stop the fluid leak and my eye started to heal.

Unfortunately I have permanent vision damage and I was told that I cannot be put on steroids ever again unless its life or death as it will likely cause further vision loss. Just something to be aware of.

I’ve had gout flare ups for over a decade, and have NO IDEA what triggers them.

It’s not alcohol
It’s not beef or red meat.
It’s not BBQ pork.
It is not lobster/seafood.

Try tomatoes.

When I came down with gout the first time I had just married my Italian wife. She had been putting tomatoes on everything.

One day I had the worst pain in my big toe and the neighbor stopped by to drop something off.  She asked me if had been eating tomatoes and a light bulb went off.  She said her mom would get it at harvest from eating too many of them.

That was two years ago and I watch how much of them I eat.  Haven't had an issue since.

I've only had it once really bad, like sledgehammer to the big toe bad. Likely had it a couple times before that but just thought I had strained that toe. My bad attack came after eating steaks and drinking beer for three days in a row along with drinking a liter of Diet Mt Dew every day for years, which may have been causing dehydration. I completely quit the soda and beer and only drink water now and only eat steak for special occasions. That was over two years ago and haven't had a gout attack since, knock on wood.

Since going mostly carnivore 3 1/2 years ago, I've only had 2 flare ups. The first was from sardines, I was eating a tin/day for a while and that did me in. The second, oddly enough was from pork rinds. Never been a problem before but I think, much like the sardines, I simply over-consumed and set off an attack.

ETA: These are amazing, BTW.

No idea what triggers it, but since being on allopurinol, I haven't had a flare-up.

When ones does occur, an indomethacin injection stops it in it's tracks.

Black Tea. Took me a while to realize, but once I cut it, it pretty much went away. I had moved from soda to tea thinking it was a better option for caffeine and it messed up my teeth and gave me gout.

Alkaline water has been a big help too. I drink a lot of it. It really helped eliminate it. I highly recommend it for everyone in this thread. It sounds quacky, but it works.

Clams on the halfshell.
Which is very unfortunate as I can demolish 100's of them at a July 4th cookout.

Shrimp and "Luncheon" meat (salami, gabbagoo, mortadella, pastrami, ham) contribute to it as well. Especially when paired with homebrew or microbrewery beer.

I'm on allopurinol for maintenance and have colchacine always at the ready.  Gout sucks terribly...

I figured out how to start on Allupurinol. I'm not a doctor.... Take a 300 mg Allopurinol pill and chop it into 8 (or 16) pieces. Take one of those pieces per day. YOU WILL STILL GET GOUT. Keep going with the 1/8 pill. After a week or so, go to a step up. YOU WILL STILL GET GOUT. Tough it out. Just keep upping the amount over time, but slowly. The gout will settle  down over time. It took me ~6 months. I have not had an attack in like 20 years. I'm not a doctor.... Just my experience. I don't even take Allopurinol any more. I eat everything . Shrimp, crabs, mudbugs, turkey, beef, asparagus, Makes one think... Is the left involved?

Hmm...sardines and tuna. I'd never thought about those as potential gout triggers. I bought a bunch of tuna and sardines as a protein snack when cravings for something kicked in.

I'm sure it's a purely individual thing as to how your body reacts. I didn't have issues with the sardines until I went to one tin per day, same with the pork rinds. As an occasional thing, my body doesn't seem to mind, but daily for both was bad juju. YMMV

I am off all drugs and have a gout attack once every 3 years.   But I have to be aware of some foods.

Ribeye steaks once a month is ok.  Once grilled up some ribeyes for dinner, then next day I had lunch leftovers at work and the last of the ribeye again for dinner.  That’s three ribeye meals in about 26 hrs.  Boom next morning biggest flare up.  Ribeyes are a trigger.

Any seafood without a backbone is a trigger.  Scallops, oysters, shrimp etc is playing with danger.   Trout and salmon are ok and I eat fish often.

Too much drinking or chocolate is playing with danger.   Organ meat is high in purines so kidney, liver and onions etc is off the list.

Research on Gout seems to often be contradictory.  Triggers seem to be mostly inconsistent in that what bothers you may not bother me.

It would be nice to monitor ones own uric blood level.

It does seem that Shrimp and or Alcohol bothers every one.
Link Posted: 7/14/2022 6:07:57 PM EDT
[#44]
Scallops for me. Oddly enough shrimp do not bother me.

Also, beans in high quantity. I can have a scoop of baked beans no problem but if I am eating on a tray of enchiladas for a few days I will probably have a flareup.

Finally, cheap processed meats.

I'll usually wake up with stiffness and maybe slight soreness in whatever joint the flare up is starting in.  The real pain doesnt usually come until the next morning.

Originally years ago my first attacks were the big toes. Since then I have gotten it in the tops of my feet, ankles, heels, both shoulders, and a thumb.

Yes if you are a long time sufferer of gout Allopurinal is a daily you can take to reduce your Uris acid load.
If it only happens on rare occasions say 3 times a year have Cholchine on hand before it happens.
It results from too much protein and not enough water period. 4 bouts in 40 years, no fun but have the meds on hand just in case.
I avoid lobster (love it) and eat some salads and veggies if hungry after dinner- Now none of that is fun but beats hell out of a short bout of gout.
