I was about to buy one of these but I tested my space heater using a Kill-A-watt meter. It pulls 1800watts on high, so the HF Predator 2000 wouldn't be enough to pull it.
Was wanting one that could pull the space heater, charge phones and possibly run a TV. Question: If the power is out and you hook your modem up to a power supply will the internet work? We have Windstream DSL and it runs off our phone land line. |

When I got up the next morning there was no internet. So it is possible to still have internet, but during a widespread power outage it would be unlikely. |

View Quote It'll work for paralleling the 3500W generators, but you only get another 500W. For paralleling the total output of the 3500s you'd need a 60A inlet, outlet, circuit breaker and some 4AWG wire. |

Has anybody thought about taking one of the bigger non-inverter "smoke and noise generators" from HF or elsewhere and trying to put a cabinet around it to quiet it down? That could be another good budget option for those DIYers in here. Heck even for the inverter generators a small enclosure might not be a bad idea to keep the elements off the genset.
There seems to be pre-made options out there but they seem ridiculously expensive for what you'd really need to do something on a budget. Even if you didn't have a lot of equipment to fabricate something "nice" I think you should be able to do it with some basic hand tools and a couple trips to Lowes or Home Depot. Just make sure there's enough natural or assisted airflow so it won't heat soak. Most enclosures could be made for easy assembly so it would store flat somewhere or you could use the enclosure itself to store a smaller generator and genset supplies like cables, adapters, oil, plugs, fire extinguisher, etc. to make a nice self-contained storage option. People get desperate so in an extended SHTF scenario being able to run quiet is a good thing to stay inconspicuous. In 2011 when we lost power for over a week the last couple nights were horrible as the cheap gensets started flooding the area and my neighborhood sounded like the infield at Talledega 24/7. The noise pollution was getting bad as it started getting hard to rest/concentrate. Telegraphing that you have power and gas will always lure some unsavory or just plain panicking/desperate types too. |

Basically, you're burning fuel to produce heat, which the engine turns into mechanical energy, which the generator head turns into electrical energy - only to get turned back into heat by your heater. Each step in that conversion process wastes some energy. Much better to burn fuel and use the heat directly. If you don't like propane heaters, consider a kerosine heater instead. |

Heads up to anyone with the harbor freight 3500 change the craptastic "torch" brand sparkplug ASAP.
Bought one a week or so before hurricane Irma hit. it started first touch of the starter and ran great. Later after the storm had passed, we used it for a couple days and it worked admirably. Didn't miss a beat and kept us in power the whole time. Just went out this weekend to start her up and she wouldn't start. Pulled the plug and tested It but alas, there was no spark. Drained the oil and gas and was about to exchange the unit, but there were none to exchange it with locally. Figured I would try to change the plug out first. Got an e3 plug, slapped her in and refilled the oil and gas. She started right up. Factory plug was shot after a mere 40 hours of operation Change that shit plug! |

i just scored a low hour (claiming 10 or so) Power Horse 2000 inverter from a neighbor for $200! Northern tool sells them for $600 so I figured it was worth a shot, fired right up.
now what should I do to make sure it's in top shape? new plug and oil change? I'm going to assume this guy did nothing, |

What is this leak you guys are seeing? Isn't that yellow shit tiger snot (3M adhesive for the gasket to hold for assembly)?
Maybe I have had too much Was looking for a drip or puddle I guess. ETA: Maybe the slight oil sheen collecting dust towards the bottom? Tighten the bolts and wipe it off is what I would do. |

The Champion 80cc 73531i Inverter Generator manual gives this info regarding spark plugs:
Intermittent use (less than 1 hour/month) or
colder temperatures (below 60°F) NGK BR6HS or equivalent Moderate use (less than 3 hours/month) or seasonal temperatures (50-80°F) NGK BR7HS or equivalent Extreme use (continuous) or hot climates (80-100°F) NGK BR8HS or equivalent View Quote On another note, the people who frequent the Survival Forum have been discussing and reviewing many of these various generators for years. This is kind of old hat for them, and many have chimed in here to help. There is lots of great info in the Survival Forum Archives, including how-to on nat gas conversion, what gennys run what appliances, etc. Poke around over there. |

My box already has 4 of the double breakers on top. Main switch is on the bottom. Entire bottom half of the box is filled up with 240 breakers (hot water heater, stove, dryer, and 4 for the HVAC + 2 120's). This was new construction with no modifications or additions. I guess that I will need an electrician to take a look at it to see what can be done. I was about to just purchase extension cords, but those will end up running almost $200! Makes the cost of a manual transfer switch more appealing...
