That was awesome.  .    What year would that have been?       I'm trying to figure out if John Cleese was inspired by that video, or if it was the other way round.

Well said. The M9 is an impressive LOOKING blade, but take one apart once. It's actually pretty pathetic.

Everyone is focused on the instructor, but I think the "bring your rifle with you, don't let it go, son" lesson is an important one.

As retarded as I'm sure it looks, doing the full bayonet course will definitely get you in the mood for some skull smashey and super stabiness

No bayonet has ever killed anyone.

We were taught that if we stick them, and the bayonet gets stuck inside, to fire your weapon. The bullet going in should create enough tissue vibration and gas movement to allow you to retract the pig sticker. This begges the question, what the fuck am I using a bayonet for if I have ammo?

During the Gulf War, they did an article on bayonet usage. The Army issued them, then promptly put them away. The USMC had their men actually affix them. A USMC major said that the Army used theirs as paperweights, but the Marines knew what they were for. I still think he had that backwards. The Army knew their a tual value, which was as a fancy assed paperweight.

They issued new bayonets in the mid-80s when I was in. We went from having a cheap, functional, potentially useful item to having a knife that cost $110, was improperly heat treated, and useless. Fucking perfumed princes suck.

When I went through basic and AIT in 1975 they weren't teaching bayonet training at Ft. Jackson or Ft. Polk.

The reason stated by the drill sgts?  Too many broken/damaged M16A1's.

We were also instructed that the proper way to go prone from standing/running was to fall forward with the butt of the rifle striking the ground first (right hand on the top of the stock near the butt).  However, we were also told that if we were seen allowing the butt to strike the ground when going prone we would be up shit creek because (you guessed it).  Too many broken butt stocks.

Then I got to my permanent duty station and got an M14 and no one ever talked about broken M16A1's again.

Took me a lot of years to get over my prejudice against the M16's (based on training and malfunctions during training/qualifying).

I posted this video a few years back and it got taken down from youtube for some reason.  I found it again and figured it was worth a repost.  Some people thought it was some kind of satire at first...the instructor is pretty awesome.

We did it at Ft Knox in 87.  What is the spirit of the bayonet?  What type of bayonet fighter are you?  ...were the two big questions.

Also, I have often said the Scottish need subtitles.

Our initial bayonet training was done here:

We also did laps around there for PT.  We ate at the mess hall in the background.
