I just saw two commie liberals lambast Trump for saying he is a nationalist.  Of course they lie and try to associate nationalist with racist, Hitler and puppy killers.

My country (USA) is not the oldest on Earth but we are the best.

I want Germany to be Germany...not a country over run by muslim invaders.

The same goes for other European countries.   They have their culture, language, etc that needs to remain uniquely their own.

There are many cesspool third world countries.  Their citizens need to man up and fix their problems and try to achieve a modicum of MAGA equivalency.  Stop invading other countries to ruin them.

Half the blood in my veins is of Germanic origin, but I love these United States and could give half a shit about Germany. My mother used to beg her father to teach her German. He said: "No, you are an American. You will speak the language of Americans. "

False. The United States became a Nation State the moment it adopted public education.

After all, the basis of a Nation State is a society comprised of a single identity. Cultural identity is forged during childhood. In a society with public education, that childhood is spent in a public school.

As proof, I submit that the United States public education system was inspired by and modeled after the public education system of a premier Nation State, which designed its school system for the purpose of instilling Nationalism.

Are you honestly serious? Seems like a bad faith question if you're truly asking that with even the smallest amount of sincerity.

Hint: Nationalism and Racists are like a Venn Diagram. NOT ALL Nationalists are racists but most racists would consider themselves nationalists (and that's including Black Nationalists, White Nationalists, etc..)

We're talking about historical definitions that have been used for hundreds of years. You can't just call yourself a term that has been defined for centuries and argue that your definition is different than the long established one. This isn't one of those terms one can easily dismiss naysayers as "The modern media has changed the definition, don't listen to that" because we're talking hundreds of years of the same definition.

I enjoy reading how people repeatedly blame some insidious “Left” for trying to divide the American people and create discord.

This sudden desire to use a term with no real historical precedent and which has understandable and predictable reaction from others, is a perfect example of the “Right” acting in a way that divides and creates discord.

Ironically, language is intrinsically linked to the concept of nationalism, and you can’t have a unified national identity without a common language. That’s one strength the US has always had going for it. I’m just not so sure why so many are so eager to invent their own definitions, then walk around using their new found word as a wedge.

But, it’s quite common. And we’ve seen many examples here over the years. All of these effectively create an “in group” which immediately characterizes others as outsiders because they do not share the same twisted definitions.

These days, we are told that when politicians say “Democracy” they are actually referring to mob rule and speaking against the Constitution. Diversity isn’t about learning about and respecting differences, but a Leftist tool to attack Veterans. Justice isn’t about fairness. Even “fairness” isn’t about fairness, because it’s a code for anything but. Many of these words first started being abused by the Left. That doesn’t mean we concede their abused definition, or start to play the same game. Not if we want to pretend our interests are unity, not disunity, anyway.

With the abuses of language on both the Left and the Right, it’s gotten to where damn near every perfectly normal word used historically to discuss and participate in a society has spun off into two competing and non-reconcilable fringe narratives.

People are tribal, it's part of our nature.

For there to be a tribe, there has to be an "US" and a "THEM".

Nothing wrong with putting the "US" first on a national level.

Instilling a national identity based on something beyond the normal, sure. But this was specifically to counter other types of identity formation.

The nation building concept that was pushed in that public schools was the aforementioned “Americanism.”

From there, “American nationalist” is redundant.

Where did you learn this “mainstream” definition?

It is NOT my problem that the “mainstream” is wholly communist now and uses newspeak as a guide to twist and obfuscate and very simple point.

As an Americanist I refuse to accept newspeak

ETA: If trump started using Americanism instead of nationalist would the media stop banging that point ? Of course not , Americanism would then be defined as racist .

Newspeak happens every single day now . And it comes from the “mainstream” So , since they’ve decided to do that, I’ve decided to reject their definitions when those definitions are meant to curb free speech .

It is wholly impossible to read any historic or modern discussions of nationalism and not use the “mainstream” definition. Nothing else makes sense.

Nationalism is a concept rooted in identity. Prussian nationalists believed that identity should be Prussian. German nationalist pushed for a broader identity.

These concepts have been around with this understanding since at least the end of the 30 years war. People wrote about it constantly in the 19th century.

Don’t complain of newspeak than participate in it yourself, it’s unbecoming.

If you look up Webster’s dictionary, (fascism, national socialism) requires putting the state over individual rights.

I follow what you're saying, but I think you're going too deep. I'd lean more towards this phenomenon being a backlash against the constant squeals of, "Racist! Racist!" than anything else. Surely you don't think OP consciously set out with the sole goal of driving a wedge between Americans.

The Right didn't choose the term, and no matter what anyone actually says or does the term will continue to be applied, correctly or more likely incorrectly, by the MSM. It shouldn't be a surprise to see some number of people begin to do something other than cower at the label, even to the point of embracing and trying to change the narrative surrounding the term.

Says the guy haranguing everyone here about the “correct” meaning of nationalist . And by correct I mean the lefts version.

I’ll happily use Americanism from now on if it stops the college professor lecturing about how racist everyone is .

The way liberals want to use the word, it absolutely does equate to anyone who is a patriotic American

This is very true. It is also not a true representation of either term. Therefore, it is best to be careful in choosing words.

The truly enlightened and educated here are combing the educational archives to label Americanism  as racist as we speak.

Anything other than pro government isn't allowed

La Raza is actually a good example of a nationalist movement - they advocate and advance a national identity rooted in Spanish linguistic and mestizo genetic heritage. It’s similar to the party line Mexican national identity built/manufactured after their revolution, so they probably just stole it from there.

It seems limited to the US though, nobody in Latin America, let alone Mexico, really seems to give a shit about them. The more radical nationalist movements in Latin America reject Spanish as a European imperialist legacy but can’t really seem to find a unifying alternative (in part because no real historical basis exists).
