Any chance you might drill the stump to get a little rocket stove action through the middle?
What about the folks saying that pouring something in the stump to act as an oxidizer? Maybe stick some magnesium blocks down in it? |
|
So.. You had your fun and entertained us by playing with fire
Did you end up renting a stump grinder to actually get rid of the stump? |

OK, I got a day that 1, I was free and 2 it wasnt freakin raining.
I cut some air holes in the side of the barrel and its burning much hotter. Of course me being me I couldnt just burn round holes, so I did stars, crosses, geometric shapes that look like they have downs syndrome. Its hard to draw with a torch. |
|
OP, I've been on your side through this whole ordeal, but I have to admit I'm disappointed to see all the dicking around has so far only succeeded in turning the stump black.
I really do think you need an explosives license. |
|
I imagine after being pretty well baked and covered the stump is probably a lot more willing to burn now.

Well, I certainly didnt meet my expectation, but I knew from the beginning this would either be am act of prue genius or a matter of trial and error. If I would have understood better how the KNo3 was supposed to work I would be way ahead of where Im at. I do have some Thermite on hand if I need it. |

Well.....
Now that thermite is on the table, get to melting shit. |

Ok, BREAKING......UPDATE........Taylor Swift sharted unicorn dust on the stump and its actually burning on its own!
Last time I fed it any wood was Saturday around 4pm, came home yesterady morning from work and what do you know, the barrel was smoking. I got out my wifes lil electric blower and blew all the ash off and it was clear that now the stump out KNo3 stuff was working. Still burning at 9pm tonight when I left for work so we'll see in the morning. Basically its been burning on its own for atleast 48hrs. |

To bad you can't charge somebody by the hour to burn stumps with your great invention, Christ you'd be rolling in the money.

Drilling holes and adding stump remover really helps huh? I burned a stump at my camp this summer and the two things I found that really helped it go faster were drilled holes with stump remover and to scrape off all the charcoal I could from the stump between burns. Doing this I'd burn through inches of stump with each fire instead of only burning an inch or so with each fire.

My neighbor just removed a pretty big stump that was left from 2 trees forking at the ground, each about 18" across.
The Method used: Dig a big trench around the stump Pound wooden stakes in 4 corners Cut some Plywood into 2 foot high strips and screw to the stakes Line with garbage can liners Fill With Water (18"), leave hose on trickle for a week. Stump pulled right out complete the next weekend with a jack or truck. |

I use an old dryer drum to burn out stumps. Don’t think that would be big enough for your project.

I started to burn a pine stump out by cutting a cross hatch pattern in the top with a chain saw, then filling the hatches with charcoal lighter fluid and starting the fire on top. I then got the leaf blower and after the flames were gone, fanned the embers with that. As long as I had the air coming in, it was like a forge. But it took about an hou to get one quarter of the way done and I had 15 trees to go so I bailed and paid someone with a grinder to take them out. If they had not been fresh, I probably would have had better luck.

So much potential.... I'm actually a little mad at you OP. You have seriously failed us all at this point.

I guess I should have videoed my neighbor pulling out two smaller stumps in about 2 weeks using the drowning method to maybe try and save your thread?
I thought you were going to see this through to the end, come hell or high water, no matter how many thousand gallons of fuel oil you had to pump into that contraption. I'm disappointed, photo is above. |

Ohh does it have a remote control ? View Quote Heres why I quit. I wound up with a 14' diameter hole once everything was said and done. I figured it would take 5 more times of moving the barrel and 2 burns for each move. As it was it was still better than grinding from the start as it took me 4hrs to do what was left. Thats after I hit dirt in the center of the stump via burnninating. |

Life was sure a lot simpler when you could buy dynamite at the farm store.

If you spent 4 hours with that stump grinder on any one stump, it's not because the grinder couldn't do it. That's all on the operator.... I've seen 50 or more 12-36' hardwood stumps ground out in an easy day. You sir, are simply trying to feel better about your failure. eta: still happy you're posting pics/vids though.
