I gotta be honest, I have never understood why people like cruise ships. Maybe I am just a curmudgeon but being trapped in a space with several thousand people is my worse nightmare.

It's cool they can build them that big, but that is not for me. I would be more at home an smaller boat. Saga and Viking have boats with 200-300 people and that is big enough. Hell there are yacht cruises with 30 people on board... that would be fun as hell.  That mega boat is just too much.

If you’re the kinda guy that walks past a whole row of urinals to stand next to the only fella using one, you’re probably gonna love a cruise ship.

Used to cruise 2-4 x a year before covid. Living within 45 minutes of two major ports gets me awesome last minute deals on all lines.  Never liked the bigger ships.  Doesn't feel like cruising at all.  Largest for me are RCCLs Freeom class ships, NCLs Breakaway class and Carnival's Conquest class.

150k size seems to be the sweet spot for large enough to not be boring but not to large to no longer feel you are at sea cruising
View Quote
Yup, thats the sweet spot. I've been on 30+ cruises. 100,000 to 150,000 GT is big enough that you have plenty of stuff to do/see, but not so big as to be a chore to get around. Even 80,000 to 90,000 GT sized ships are "comfortable".

Some of the very first ships I went were in the 40,000 GT range. Back in the old Sitmar days like the Fairsky, and later the Sky Princess, Golden Princess(old) and later ships started getting bigger with the Crown Princess and Regal Princess. I've also been on the Royal Princess, Golden Princess, Star Princess, Grand Princess, Diamond Princess, Sapphire Princess and soon, the Discovery Princess.

As far as Royal Caribbean, I'm not as well traveled on their new really big stuff. I've been on the Sun Viking, Viking Serenade, Sovereign of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, Splendour of the Seas, Legend of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and the Vision of the Seas. I like their upscale Celebrity brand much more, the quality of food and service is far superior to standard RCL. I've been on Millennium, Constellation, Infinity multiple times as well as the Equinox.

Holland American is not my favorite. Service and food is OK, but the ships feel boring. I've only been on the Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the Oosterdam.

The best food and service is Cunard, hands down. I went on the Queen Mary 2 in a Queen's Grill suite and it was absolutely top notch.

I won't consider a Carnival or NCL ship.

I will admit, the ship looks impressive as heck.

Cap the limit at say 2,500 passengers with tickets starting at $4k, maybe. 7000+ people with $1xxx tickets? No thanks.

I just got back from a 7 day Carnival cruise of the Mexican riviera,  It's the best bang for the buck that's out there.
No where can a person pay $500 to travel over 2500 miles and be taken to  3 different city's, housed and fed , prime rib, lobster, filet mignon for 7 days with a balcony room , comedy shows, water park, movies, gym, miniture golf and that's only some of the things offered.

There were over 4500 people on the ship I was on and at no time did it feel like it. I can only guess it was because  there is so many places to hang out that no one place was ever overwhelmed.

My kids loved it and if this gets me out of having to go and get raped by the mouse ever other year, then bring on the norovirus or what ever basement dwellers are afraid of.

That many people us a nightmare.  I’d sail on her if I got lucky and there was only 2500 on board, but that’ll never happen.

Perspective on those numbers, btw.  Titanic was 882.75 feet in length and displaced 46k tons.  This thing is almost 1200 feet and displaces over 250k tons.

It’s absolutely massive.

The story behind the saying, "cruise ships are floating cess pools"  is because a large majority of the reported illnesses come from the pools/hot tubs/water fountains/etc.
Even well maintained pools and hot tubs harbor the below illnesses/diseases and help spread them.  The cruise lines have been unable to remove them.

Just think how many people get in the pools/hot tubs who dont clean their ass good and dont bathe before getting in.

Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Shigella, Norovirus, E. coli, Legionella, Lice and Hepatitis A are the most common listed and can live for hours or days even in the water.
