Ah yes, the '80's. One of the best times ever. MTV, Miami Vice, Night Court, and Cheers.  Great TV. Not junk like today.

We got cable in 1982. I was in 8th grade. It was that or Atari. Cable won.

I started watching MTV immediately. I remember it was a big deal that they had refused to play the video for Billie Jean. I watched MTV as much as I could.

I remember when Fleetwood Mac’s Gypsy video premiered. Massive big deal. Cost $100K to make, most expensive video up to that time.

Watched a ton of VH1, too, when that started up in the mid-80s..

80s music is best music.

And it was all Rock. Around the clock. They didn’t play rap until 1989 with “Yo MTV Raps”. Beastie Boys are the only exception I can think of but there may be others.

Michael Jackson and Madonna got so much airtime on MTV in the late 80’s (they both dominated the Pop charts) that to appease pissed off viewers, they’d have special “Michael Jackson free weekends” and “Madonna free weekends” where they’d go an entire 48 hours without playing any MJ or Madonna videos. That’s how oversaturated we were with their videos. It seemed like every third video was either MJ or Madonna.

They also shifted to an all Pop format, so we’d have to wait until 11:00 PM to see anything resembling heavy rock, first with Heavy Metal Mania which was replaced by Headbanger’s Ball.

Martha Quinn was one of my first crushes.

Then it all turned to garbage and reality TV.

I was a grown man by the 80s but I loved MTV. It's 99 Luftballons BTW. I still have the LP single.

This was mind blowing

Herbie Hancock - Rockit (Official Video)

This was such a huge deal.  In an age before the internet, you had to wait for it to come on to see it.  It would be advertised and you would plan your evening around this video coming on.  Think about this, Thriller is still *probably* the best selling album of all time. And the population was about half what it is today.  Kids today dont really understand this level of "sensational"  and how truly big it was.

Michael Jackson - Thriller (Official 4K Video)

And stuff like this....it fueled us.

Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock (Official Music Video)

Our daughter was born in 82 and we afforded cable as our sole entertainment. We would park her in front of MTV to keep her attention. Probably explains why my wife and daughter both had an unhealthy fascination with Billy Idol. They would dance in the living room to videos, and sometimes I would with them. Memories...

Got dusty in here.  I'll fix that.
