What's some good options for a HD garage gun, one that's less likely to rust with hot and cold temps with humidity here in the midwest?

Used 870 or a Shockwave?

I have a psa ar15 in my detached un  heated garage for two years and it's perfectly fine.

You could go with a pistol like a used p95 in the 250 range, in fact that's what I have too.

I have a couple others and ammo hidden in there too... in case I would lose my home to fire or somehow not be able to get in my safe... I know I'll be able to continue to protect myself.

How much is "inexpensive?"

There are plenty of NIB handguns in 9mm going for under $300 now a days.  SS revolvers from Taurus and Rossi can also be found for under $300.

Long guns....well, if you really wanted one.  I saw a NIB Rem 870 going for $269 on sale the other day.  Rifles galore from 22LR to center fire at the used gun racks.

Aloha, Mark

If you're considering a handun, get a SD9VE and an Apex trigger. I'd rather have a rifle over a handgun any day of the week.

I keep an 870 I coated with black appliance enamel paint in mine, coated the barrel (18") and all the other metal with it and have yet to have a rust issue, I have it in the rafters or in a storage cabinet

Up on the north shore we see lots of different temp swings and it's been fine.

Cav Arms lower and cheap PSA middy SS upper.

Is this firearm also intended to used to dispatch unwanted critters?

I vote for a painted 870 or a Pardner accompanied with a variety of ammo but loaded with slugs or 00.

If a pistol is wanted instead , I would look at G22 trade in for $250-275.

I found a very worn 870 wingmaster with a 20" barrel and mag extention at the local pawn shop for $149. It is now my favorite shotgun, man is it smooth. It was cheap and it is already beat up, so it does not get babied.

Any stainless barreled AR with a stainless bolt/carrier?

Or if feeling less threatened a glock.

A good used 870 coated with heat resistant Rustoleum would work fine.   I coated an old Mossberg 500 20ga and it looked good.   Keep the bore coated with CLP.

Back when I lived in a more public and crappy part of town I used to keep an FEG PA63 in the top drawer of my toolbox.

Now there is nothing out there. I live in a profoundly quiet part of town on a gated propert and seldom hang out in the garage anymore.

Made no sense to leave a firearm out there anymore.

paragon cs 12 gauge is what i use for a shed gun and it is holding up fine to the heat and humidity.
IT was in bad shape when i picked it up so i just painted it and fixed the cracks in the stock.

Chambered and on safe with tape over the bore.

Used 870 coated with Brownells alumahyde.   Wont rust but will do a number on anything that walks within it's engagement envelope.

Find a cheap lower, PSA has a complete upper with BCG & CH for $250 shipped. LPK $90. Youd have plenty of time to decide on pistol or rifle config.

Its pretty attractive price point IMO it goes bang and drives lead into bad guys. Send them to hell lickity split.

In light of recent happenings, if you don't make it a 8.5in .458 SOCOM pistol, you ain't got a hair on your ass, bud.

May want to look into what your local laws are regarding leaving a loaded weapon out or in drawer.

Garages may be considered outside of the house.

A sherrif deputy from Tennessee came in the gunstore a while back and bought five Maverick 88 12 ga pumps. Said he would test fire them and keep one in his shop, one in his camper, one in his truck, one in his horse barn, and one on his four wheeler.

A police trade in 870 is perfect for this job. There have been a shit ton of them available through GT Distributors here in Texas lately. $200 or less gets you a pretty decent blaster, often with a side saddle etc....

Old break open shotgun, mostly used for pest control in back yard. No blue left on it, was that way when I got it.
