Guns
The dual 2 2А38 [ru] 30 mm cannons (as well as the later 2A38M) were designed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau and manufactured by the Tulamashzavod Joint Stock Company. The cannons are fired alternatively with a combined rate of fire of between 3,900 and 5,000 rounds per minute (1,950 to 2,500 rpm for each gun), which gives a continuous fire time of 23–30 seconds before running out of ammunition, and have a muzzle velocity of 960 metres per second (2,100 mph).[20] Bursts of between 83 and 250 rounds are fired as determined by the target type, with an engagement range between 0.2 to 4.0 kilometres (0.12 to 2.49 mi). HE-T and HE-I shells are used and fitted with a A-670 time and impact fuze which includes an arming delay and self destruct mechanism.[9] The 2K22 can fire its cannons in two primary modes of operation, radar and optical. In radar mode, the target tracking is fully automatic, with the guns aimed using data from the radar. In optical mode, the gunner tracks the target through the 1A29 stabilized sight, with the radar providing range data.[16][21]

Thanks. I guess with the time fuze and radar ranging it could perform like a prox. fuze but not great. I think that kind of fuzing or the rheinmetal 35mm fuzing is useful against small targets

Kinda yeah, BUT: in this case they made it work and we didn’t.  They built a couple hundred of the two models.  I have a soft spot for the Coanda Antonovs.

Yep, doing exactly the same thing a couple decades later.  Almost like the Soviets and Chinese have something in common....

It's one thing to copy a successful operational airplane and another a prototype on a contract competition.   Makes you wonder just how well thier spy network was and even more important how well we already know the Chinese network is.

Today is Russian orthodox Christmas

So, since I was grew up in 50's and 60's, and attended Catholic Mass, I was curious to see what is different from Catholic vs Orthodox.

This is full Chistmas eve mass last year, losts of ceremony stuff.
Some of it is similar to traditional Catholic high Mass in the 50's-60's, the bilble quotes are sung, priest waves thing with incense smoke.
Major differences...no pope, no pews, everyone stands to sides.
The altar is in its own room, only the priests go in and do the chalice stuff.

Soviets wanted to have an aircraft comparable to the U-2.

But it never had the ceiling nor range / endurance of the U-2

But this time the Russians didn't just slavishly exactly copy the western aircraft like they did to the interned B-29's to "create" their Tu-4 "Bull" bombers

I was perusing google earth at lunch, the area  east of soledar
There’s some unusual features that look like trenches , not old creek beds.  And there’s some old foundations or maybe forts
Could these be from WWII?  Or just old salt mine infrastructure?
I circled the areas of interest.
I don’t think they are anything current because I’ve yet to find any recent photos showing any recent fighting in Ukraine- at least not past 2015

My (limited) understanding is that the most dangerous modern targets (jets and cruise missiles) are moving too fast, and the gun range is too short, for their to be enough engagement time for guns to be effective (note the max range was 4km).

How long are fast targets remaining within the engagement envelope of those guns? Not very long.

For attack helicopters, an ATGM like Hellfire already has a range over 10km, so they would presumably need to use a missile in that case as well.

Compare to the current US approach on M-SHORAD which has a bit of everything, but in terms of guns with substantial range, it's "just" an M230LW 30mm (not nearly the same as other 30mm rounds out there). It's really just enough gun (and the right ammunition type) to take down slower moving, small- to medium drones.

Any target too small and cheap to warrant 30mm rounds, gets 7.62 or EW for soft kill, and anything fast/big enough to be truly dangerous gets a Hellfire.

The Russians apparently came to this realization about their big 30mm cannons, and determined it was better just to take them off. It was not enough gun for real threats, and too much gun for the small stuff.

Definitely not a machine gun based on this close up (as you suspected), but what is it?  Can’t see the utility of a grenade launcher there. Note the tank behind it on the line doesn’t have one; looks like it might have elevation ability,  but no traverse, limiting utility.  Fires some kind of anti-mine round/mic-lic?

Why hope it's true?  It's to everyone's benefit that they keep throwing some of their increasingly-limted resources at that stupid hulk.  Those are people and material that they can't then turn around and put into other programs, like making more IRBMs, or designing a replacement.

Goliath transmitter was a very low frequency (VLF) transmitter for communicating with submarines, built by Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine navy near Kalbe an der Milde in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, which was in service from 1943 to 1945. It was capable of transmission power of between 100 and 1000 kW and was the most powerful transmitter of its time.

Legacy of Goliath after 1945

A panorama of Goliath transmitter towers in Nizhny Novgorod's suburban Kstovsky District
Shortly after World War II, the Goliath transmitter buildings and antennas were reportedly destroyed by the Soviet Union. Today only a large mast base remains of the original installation.[7]

According to the interview given in 2007 by the commander of the present-day Goliath facility in Russia, Captain 1st Rank Yuri Gorev, to the Nizhny Novgorod edition of Argumenty i Fakty, Goliath was rebuilt between 1949 and 1952 in the Kudma River valley, in the southern suburbs of Nizhny Novgorod (Kstovsky District; 56°10′19″N 43°55′54″E). Since then, the station has been transmitting commands and time signals RJH90[9] for the Russian Navy. Since the 1960s, it has also participated in tracking spacecraft. The nearby settlement for the staff of the facility is known under the name Druzhniy.

The antenna system of Vileyka VLF transmitter greatly resembles that of Goliath, but all its masts are about 100 metres taller.[10]
