GIF is an abbreviation of Graphical Image File Format.

How is the G in "Graphical" pronounced?

That should determine the pronunciation of the GIF acronym.

He gets an A+ in computer science, and an F in English for failing to understand common phonetics.

But code monkeys are rarely literate. That's why they hired me to write their software installation instructions and user manuals.

See my post directly above yours.

CIFS is and abbreviation of Common Internet File System.  However it is, and only is, pronounced ‘sifs’.

There is no rule that says an acronym must be pronounced with the hard or soft sound of it’s represented word.

ETA:  read your other post...code monkeys are illiterate.   ok.

For all those making this argument, how are the following acronyms pronounced?

NASA - National Aeronautical and Space Administration
Nay-sa or Nah-sa?

LASER - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
Lay-sir or Lay-zir?

NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Nah-toe or Nay-toe?

POTUS - President of the United States
Po-thus or Po-tus?

UNICEF - United Nations Children's Fund
Uni-chef or Uni-sef?

The pronunciation of an acronym is clearly based on the word the acronym forms, not the words used to create the acronym.

Please note that I'm only focusing on acronyms that create words, not those you spell out letter by letter. Those can be weird too, like CIA vs CSI.
