Take your time and find a vintage USA vise that isn't beat to crap and is a reasonable price. Be prepared to do some cleaning and repainting.

American made are the best. You can get older USA made ones off Ebay for a good deal.

Other than that, a machining vise is also good to have on hand too and may actually cost less.

Any of the big box stores will be selling chinese crap, its pretty worthless stuff.

Which ones should I be looking at?

I need a good vise to help be bend the mild steel "face frame" from the PDU I got today. My woodworking vise was not up to the task.

Go to your local scrap yard and see what they can dig up for you. My guy brought me a nice 6" Wilton with a slightly bent handle for $100. Everything else on it was solid and straight. I disassembled it, greased it up and have been using it for a couple of years now.

Yeah I love tools from the USA, however, over double the price for the same vise as the Taiwan version which has been beat to hell during testing and is the same exact vise just made in Taiwan is just too much for the USA vise.

I have an old 205lb Starrett and a small Record vise at home but I still want the 5” Fireball Tools vise for some reason.

I’m thinking about just mounting a small milling vise to my bench to act as my utility vise though.

Check local estate sales.

I found this US made Wilton model 535 vice that was still in its original box for $38.

Rare find for a survivor but there are several folks who refurb these old vices and sell them on Etsy and EBay.

How do you know which ones are USA made?
On this page, it claims "The Combo Pipe & Bench and Machinist Bullet vises are proudly built in the USA"
https://wiltontools.com/vises/bullet-vises/

But when I click on Machinist and choose either the 4" or 5" and go to Acme, it states Country of Origin as Taiwan?

If you are gonna use it to make money, Orange.

If you are using it for general maintenance or hobby work then I'd look for a used one on FB marketplace or similar local listings.

Eric's vise isn't really something I'd beat on. Too pretty.

The body is aluminum, not sure about the master jaws. The slide is all steel.

I have a tradesman that I bought 10 years ago.

Product Description
Proudly made in the USA, the Tradesman round channel vise is designed to handle the most demanding clamping applications. Unlike most vises that have a fixed center nut, the Tradesman round channel vise nut is anchored at the rear which provides straight line pull and even pressure resulting in greater durability. The round channel design also allows for a completely enclosed spindle and nut assembly keeping debris out and lubrication in for a lifetime of smooth operation. For ultimate versatility, the Tradesman vise is equipped with main jaws, pipe jaws and a machined anvil work surface.

From the Manufacturer
The Wilton 63200/1755 Tradesman Vise is great for general purpose, service, or maintenance work. Holds pipes, fittings, machined parts, fabrications, and components. Wider jaws provide for a greater clamping surface. A fully enclosed spindle and nut increases the life of this vise. This vise has a 360 degree swivel base with double lockdowns, a precision turned sidebar, and is made from 60,000 PSI tensile ductile iron.

I picked this Reed 106 up a couple months ago for $150 and other than the handle it's pretty clean.  I would take a vintage Reed over a Wilton any day of the week.

Why Germany?  Polish vises are solid.

Most of the American companies aren’t even making vises here anymore, they’re “international” lines now.

OP said no Asian. If he wanted Taiwanese I’d recommend a Yost.  Yost still makes the 34C here in the States but it’s over a $1000 usually.  Their heavy duty, high tensile strength vises are still nice vises and relatively inexpensive though manufactured overseas.

More of a precision vise, not a mechanics vise.  The key to a good vise for beating parts apart and torquing heavily on is ductile iron construction and the tensile strength of it.  Cheap vises are just plain cast iron.  Precision vises and corrosive environment vises are different animals and usually steel or stainless steel. What you want is a vise that won’t distort, can handle shock and survive with it’s jaws still in alignment. This is where high tensile, ductile iron shines.
