One out of two gets a rifle. The one without follows him! When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one who is following picks up the rifle and shoots!

What are the spec's? Is it just an M68 gun or a lighter version? How many and what kinds of rounds will it carry? How many crew? Autoloader or no? Weight?
ETA: 38 tons. Not light in my book. Lighter than the M1 and newest version of the Bradley but still on the heavy side for a light tank. That's Sherman weight. |

A pair of AC-47T "Fantasma" gunships of the Colombian Air Force's 214th Tactical Air Support Squadron in flight View Quote Basler BT-67 The Basler BT-67 is a utility aircraft produced by Basler Turbo Conversions of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It is a remanufactured and modified Douglas DC-3; the modifications are designed to significantly extend the DC-3's serviceable lifetime. Basler custom configures each new build to the clients specifications. Industries served include cargo, military, cloudseeding, scientific research, and various other applications.[1] The conversion includes fitting the airframe with new Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprop engines, lengthening the fuselage, strengthening the airframe, upgrading the avionics, and making modifications to the wing leading edges and wingtips. View Quote There’s One Place In The World Where AC-47 Spooky Gunships Still Fly Exactly how many of the AC-47Ts remain active in Colombia is unclear. As of 2014, six were reportedly in service. By 2020, three were confirmed as being active — one of these airframes is a former British Royal Air Force aircraft dating back to the 1940s. Another is a D-Day veteran that flew over Normandy in 1944 with the U.S. Army Air Force. View Quote |

Originally Posted By Gopher: Today I learned the B-36 had gun turrets. Cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDFqzLefiPM View Quote The B-36's didn't keep their gun turrets. For one thing, when those 20mm auto cannons opened up, the recoil often broke delicate vacuum tubes in the aircraft, resulting in at least one crash. The Airforce went with what they called the Featherweight Configuration that dropped the turrets & other "unnecessary weight" to allow the B-36 to fly HIGH often over enemy interceptors. A lot of folks don't know this, but the huge wing of the B-36 allowed it to reach VERY high altitudes for the 50's and it was often flying above the interception altitude of the jets of the day. In February 1954, the USAF awarded Convair a contract for a new "Featherweight" design program, which significantly reduced weight and crew size. The three configurations were: Featherweight I removed defensive hardware, including the six gun turrets. Featherweight II removed the rear compartment crew comfort features, and all hardware accommodating the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter. Featherweight III incorporated both configurations I and II. The six turrets eliminated by Featherweight I reduced the aircraft's crew from 15 to 9. Featherweight III had a longer range and an operating ceiling of at least 47,000 feet (14,000 m), especially valuable for reconnaissance missions. The B-36J-III configuration (the last 14 made) had a single radar-aimed tail turret, extra fuel tanks in the outer wings, and landing gear allowing the maximum gross weight to rise to 410,000 pounds (190,000 kg). Definitely a Interesting Beast of the 40's - 50's ... If you haven't watched Jimmy Stewart in "Strategic Air Command", you certainly ought to if you want some amazing B-36 p0rn ... BIGGER_HAMMER |
