Surprise and extreme violence of action can work wonders. The tank could have farted around, calling for infantry etc giving someone among the RU to figure out they have an RPG and get ready. Or take the gift and gun the fuckers down. Anyway, the RU infantry were taking fire from their front/right flank not just the tank. The tank just flushed them out.

I’ve also read in the last week that almost all OPEC nations are feeding Russia the critical materials it needs to continue to build their weapons.  With more of this coming to light I wonder how we will respond? If China starts sending lethal aid we can’t sanction all these countries and have a functioning economy.

We could pull our aid out of Saudi Arabia and any of the others. The oil Arabs are pretty inept in doing their  own defense. You want to help Russia? Fine, have fun getting fucked by Iran, Russia’s buddy.

Saudi’s need us far more than we need them. Nixon fucked us over with the enabling OPEC and the petrodollar. Most of our internal corruption is enabled by the power the petrodollar bestows. I’m tired of us aiding shifty, thankless Arabs when there are real allies  like Ukraine ready to step up.

EU is covering some of that.

https://notesfrompoland.com/2022/06/27/eu-to-refund-poland-for-arms-donated-to-ukraine-says-pm/

The European Union will reimburse Poland for a large part of the costs of arms it has donated to Ukraine to help Kyiv defend itself from Russia’s invasion, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has revealed. Poland has been the second largest donor of military equipment to Ukraine in the world this year.

“Yesterday, I discussed this with the European Commission,” said Morawiecki on Saturday, following a visit to Brussels the previous day for a European Council summit.

“The European Commission will to a large extent, or at least in a large part, to speak safely, reimburse our expenses and these weapons of ours that we have given to Ukraine,” containued the prime minister, quoted by the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Here’s a question for more knowledgeable posters than me.
It would seem to me that M113 120mm mortar carriers would be damn near ideal for the war.  There are a lot of the around, they’re simple and cheap.  Yet I recall seeing video of maybe one in action.  Why aren’t we seeing more of them sent?

The resources in the hospitals are finite and effectively care is rationed - the local population and wounded soldiers just split the finite resources, so everyone’s amount and quality of care just sinks to the lowest common denominator.

Rationed care. Sounds like Socialized medicine. Heading that way in my town.

Paywall for me so I cannot read it, but is there no surprise there?  Not for me given all the exemptions/loopholes we seen get routinely disclosed over time from EU sanctions.

What is difficult to believe is OPEC supplying russia with semiconductor components.  They are not a base of manufacturing for those.  If they are involved, it's likely as a broker to whitewash semiconductor shipments from Asian countries.  But then, most of the worlds manufacturing base* for semiconductors are in China and India. It would be easier for China to just put the products onto trains into russia.

This is manufacturing, not marketshare.  Marketshare data is skewed to the companies that own the design, but many of those have Chinese manufacturing make those. This includes TMSC too.

A few of the videos I saw of the International Legion looked a lot more familiar tactics of coordinated movement, covering angles, aimed fire of much less volume.

My concern is that Ukraine will not win fighting Russia with Russian tactics. They have to get trained up and equipped to get out of the trenches and maneuver and use precision fire not just at the artillery level but at every level. Sure there is always an element of suppression but that should be used to maneuver and allow more precision. Just hate to see spray and pray grinding attrition.

I’m sure the videos are a tiny portion of what actually happens. Just going off what I have seen so far.

Ok I chuckled at the Iraqi wedding defense tactic. Yes it is much better than that!

I appreciate this is pitched battle but they just aren’t going to out Russian the Russians who have more Russians to throw in. I hope the western equipment and tactics take hold soon.

They aren’t “reimbursements.”  Poland is signing hard-currency contracts to purchase items like Abrams, HIMARS, etc.

You may be being misled by headlines like this:

https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-biden-politics-germany-united-states-government-1fa253e2142150fc1791f7ca4a048ffb

Which says, for example, we are providing $600 million in aid to Poland. But if you read it, it’s “financing” - they pay it back.

The Russians, like us, have different vintages and different specs.  This is a summary based on what I’ve seen.
There are modern Russian and modern Iranian rifle plates, and captured western plates.
There are some Chinese commercial rifle plates of questionable quality.
There are older Russian vests (thin steel) which are fragment-protection spec not rifle spec.  But they have utility in an artillery war.
There are Russian “riot” vests with very questionable utility even against frag.
I’ve seen all these in use and for a peer war (especially with drones) frankly I think we should rethink our protection strategy and include more frag protection.

https://p1.liveauctioneers.com/1841/54698/26578842_1_x.jpg?auto=webp&format=pjpg&version=1398942650

I know about Nam vests and the more recent ones from the 2000s.
One thing that I find interesting in Russian commentary (and Ukrainian - but I have heard more of the “mobik stories” from the Russian perspective) is the morale role that rifle plates play.
A frag spec vest might be an entirely reasonable decision when looked at across a mass army against the primary threat - HE frag from drone munitions to 155.’
But the average dude going in harm’s way doesn’t see it that way, wants rifle plates, and feels his side is fucking him if he doesn’t have them.  That’s worth thinking about.
Most of our trends have been toward two rifle plates (though weight and spec vary) and no frag protection.  I’ve said it before but I think that is worth rethinking even at the armed citizen level.  The two plates stay of course, but maybe you add soft cummerbund inserts at a minimum.  Then you integrate soft armor into a battle belt, which already exists but isn’t that common.  These two additions serve other functions, cost little in weight, and add quite a bit of frag coverage.
From there - collar, DAPS, groin protection, thigh protection - all of those are basically trading weight/mobility for protection.

LOL any community space falls to crap because nobody takes responsibility. That’s why inevitably a capitalist janitor/housekeeper is hired to take care of it before hepatitis sets in. Great example btw.

There are no doubt some like the old lady waving the Soviet flag very early in the war.  That’s to be expected.  And some of them will be treated at least as “useful” to the occupiers, but I think it the long run (if there is a long run for the Russians in Ukraine) they will be disposed of one way or the other.  The old will die off soon, but the younger will probably be replaced by more “reliable” (i.e. native Russian) replacements.  Look at the LPR-DPR local military leadership from 2014.  Almost all of them have been liquidated.  Igor Girkin is one of the very few surviving from that time, probably because he is an FSB agent and thus an insider.

Thank you. The correct and accurate description of Russia and China today is Fascism. The US is moving to democratic socialism. Not Scandinavia-style that retains individual rights, but Maoist/Marxist style that destroys anyone outside the in-group.

Yup.  Also, I wonder if attacking one of those pincers would be good practice on a small scale for some combined arms warfare.  I don't think they are ready to control the air like we might, but they could work on coordinating everything else.

Crunchies.

When the gun fired it looked different/weird.  Do modern tanks have cannister shot?  Would have been a good time for that.

Communist expansion here in the USA has been going on before I was born decades ago, and continues to this day.  That's where the real russian interference has and is happening.

Never been there. But I was born in a country that bordered it (now Ukraine).

Just in case anyone thinks that the agenda is Putin's alone and removing him would solve the problem, see this interview with Margarita Simonyan:

There are a LOT of influential people who want to put the USSR back together, and feel 100% entitled that they have the right to do so, because those lands used to belong to Russia. We say "Crimea is Ukraine, Kherson is Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia is Ukraine, Donetsk is Ukraine, Luhansk is Ukraine" because those are the borders that both nations agreed to when the USSR broke up. Lots of Russians say Ukraine is Russia because it always was.

Also see what Margarita says about her time in the US, which gives her bona fides in Russia to talk about how we are and make her a subject matter expert on what America is about.
