Basically, IBCTs don't have any direct fire infantry support platforms, and the one that the Stryker units had, the MGS, was deemed unsatisfactory for a few reasons. SBCTs also had the ATGM variant for a while, which has its own set of limitations, and the Army also tried to increase the firepower available to SBCTs by fielding things like the Stryker Dragoon, which has a 30mm autocannon, but doesn't reduce the troop capacity because it doesn't have a traditional crewed turret basket. All that is to say, they realized that IBCTs were deficient in direct-fire and operational mobility, and needed something to address that for the IBCT. Example: a Brigade of 82nd or 101st has great strategic mobility, but then once they hit the ground they most often don't have anything faster or better protected than the Leather Personnel Carrier (boots) or maybe if you're lucky a HMMWV, and most available direct fire not any bigger than 50cal (not considering mortars, towed artillery, or Javelin here). Personally, I think the M10 is going to suffer the same "orphan vehicle syndrome" as the MGS, unless it is managed by the Armor branch (and Infantry branch will fight tooth and nail to do it for themselves). The maintenance and gunnery requirements are initially overwhelming to most Infantry officers who are accustomed to much less intensive stuff that they can wear or carry, and it's a running joke that Infantry officers who show up to the Maneuver Captain's Career Course routinely have their mind blown when they realize that 20km can be covered in a few minutes, as opposed to hours or days, and that hitting targets out past 2km is also done with boring regularity by the Armor (and even Aviation) guys. It's a learning curve and a risk when people accustomed to thinking in small bullet terms try to use bigger bullets. |

It was likely a DPR guardsman, who like all Ukr inians the Russian Army sees as subhuman therefore not needing a proper rifle. I honestly can't imagine that Russia is in any way short on small arms, having the logistics to deliver them might be an issue. That would explain troops getting issued whatever is available locally. |
