As horrible as this is, maybe there is a silver lining by shocking those in the EU who’d foolishly believe a “peace negotiation” would be a good idea. Hope they see these videos, and decide Ukraine needs more weapons. I also believe the entire Transnistria situation is being carefully orchestrated by Putin. Not sure what his calculation is here: - trying to intimidate the EU, who he sees as weak, into a peace deal? - desperation? - a solution to his ammo problem?? - trying to lure Ukraine into a trap? I do not know (only Putin and his cronies know). However, I believe many Europeans will view threats toward Moldova as being direct threats to the EU, even if they are not EU, nor NATO. In this regard, the Transnistria gambit seems destined to backfire on Putin, and harden resolve to topple his regime. |

I think Transnistria is useful in status quo to maintain the pressure on the EU and NATO, which is of more value to him to making a move that guarantees a response. Putin is playing with a pair of deuces and doesn’t want to be forced to show. If he forced something dramatic in Transnistria he might also force a dramatic response from the EU/NATO. Better for him to keep teasing action to keep the EU reacting to him with measures short of what are necessary, and deterring itself from action. Maybe at some point he does play that card, but not yet IMO. |

I think it’s unlikely because of the civilian traffic on the Black Sea. The worst thing you can do is put one into a cargo ship, and I question if you can get proper targeting launching it from a 20’ boat. They can be launched from F-16s soon enough. I do think some variation of a Q-ship is a very good idea that can strike Russian assets nearly anywhere. Buy a small to medium-sized container ship with a decent turn of speed, install some containerized systems, and go to fucking town. Not even talking about Harpoons. Ukraine does a lot of stuff already that dovetail into this mission. You don’t even need starlink, since a ship’s mast allows quite a long radio LOS. Install some sea drones, some heavy quads, and some winged drones. You could raise pure havoc and then disappear. |
