Lack of SEAD I think is keeping the SU-35s grounded and the constant presence of E-3s is keeping the SU-57 benched. This came out last July. I watched it a few days ago: Russian Air Power: An OVERHYPED Threat? Some TL;DW from what I remember... -Russia doesn't have true multi-role aircraft, at least not in the way the West does. -Russian aircraft targeting capabilities for precision munitions are limited. Even if they had a good supply of PGMs, they'd still do a lot of their heavy lifting with unguided stuff requiring them to operate at low altitude and in range of MANPADs. -SAMs are part of Russia's air force, and Russian doctrine calls for some/most Russian fighter aircraft to primarily operate BEHIND the SAMs. -The Russians have had chronic problems keeping air crews trained and current. Combine all of those pre-war observations with the logistics and maintenance shit show that has been on display for the world, and none of what we've seen in the past week and a half is really a surprise. |
