Elon Musk’s Starlink restores internet to Tonga villages cut off by tsunami

"Elon Musk’s satellite venture has launched a free high-speed internet service to connect remote villages in Tonga that have been cut off since a devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami in January.

Tonga’s prime minister, Siaosi Sovaleni, said in a ceremony on Wednesday in the capital, Nuku’alofa, that 50 VSAT terminals provided free of charge by Mr Musk’s SpaceX would be distributed to the outlying islands worst hit by the tsunami.

Mr Sovaleni said Mr Musk set up a Starlink gateway station in Fiji and was donating 50 VSAT terminals and free capacity “during the emergency period”."

It is nice to see so many here getting their Starlink systems.  My recollection sucks but is there a website that identifies where Starlink can accept new users?

Strange.

For my current address availability now shows 2023.  For grins I plugged in my old address, 15 or so miles other side of town.  It's available there and I could have ordered it now.  That makes no sense.

Oh well, my T-Mobile is still chugging along at ~200 down and ~25 up.  It will do until fiber finally gets here.

If you have T-Mobile...like I do...why would you get Starlink?

My system is ready. I have to order within a week or lose my place in line.

Thoughts?

I signed up for Starlink Feb of last year.  That was before T-Mobile was available around here.  I've since canceled my order but still like to keep track of what's going on with it.

Good point.   I think I have had T-Mobile for a year.  It was great to find out about it.  I went from 4-6 Mbps down to 150 Mbps or better now.  About the same price as DSL.

Dude, same for me. My bro just got his confirmation, he lives 5 miles away, and signed up way after I did. Kinda pisses me off, we were told FCFS and that isn't fucking happening.

While waiting for Starlink I added T Mobile.  It works great.

I got my starlink email yesterday and have been wondering why I wouldn’t just continue with T mobile.

That's where I was at.   No equipment fees, only $50 a month and decent speeds I don't think Starlink would beat by very much.  I canceled the Starlink order.  T-Mobile will do until fiber finally gets here.

I'm not very well versed on latency, is this bad?

Currently have TMobile and probably average 40-50 mbps download

From another post here (post #28)  the Gen 2 box may be plain....no antenna outline.

@MaxC1776 That is the 'hook you' test lol. The new normal seems to be 120 down and 10 up. I have been a user since March 2021.

Mine will be here tomorrow, about one week shy of a year since I signed up. Though unless FedEx shows up early in the morning it will be a week or two before I can get it hooked up because I'm heading out of town for work later in the day. Hopefully it will work ok from the ground for a bit since they are saying "mid March" for shipping on the pole adaptor that will let me stick it on the corner fence post that I plan on using.

With Musk telling everyone that he's a free speech absolutist, is anyone placing extra value on having Starlink as its ISP?

Set ours up this morning. Says it takes around 12 hours to fully be up and running.

We are hoping the upload speeds are decent. Wife is a professional Real Estate photographer. She could pay someone overseas to edit her pictures at night while she sleeps, but our current internet thru spectrum is only 10mps upload to a possible of 20mps. Not nearly fast enough.

I have my doubts on Starlink but will give it a shot.

The Starlink pipe fits inside any old directv or dish mounting post. You just need to secure the Starlink pipe with a couple of healthy self-tapping screws to suck it into the pipe. Those old satellite mounting posts are almost free at the local recycling place or dump if you get to them in time.

I read an article today that Starlink is being jammed in the Ukraine so SpaceX/Starlink is working to overcome that issue.

Elon Musk says SpaceX focusing on cyber defense after Starlink signals jammed near Ukraine conflict areas

"SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said Friday that his company is now focusing on cyber defense and overcoming signal jamming of its Starlink internet satellites amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

"Some Starlink terminals near conflict areas were being jammed for several hours at a time," Musk wrote in a Twitter statement Friday (March 1). "Our latest software update bypasses the jamming.""

So excited.

Got shipping confirmation from a Feb 2021 order.

Slow internet has been killing us out here. Spend an ungodly amount of money on ViaSat and Hotspots.

While I was at it added a second Starlink Unit, it's already preparing for shipment too.

Then I went ahead and put a deposit on Premium.

Mine doesn't have to go far, maybe 20 feet from the house but it does have to cross a gate and I haven't figured out how I'm going to permanently solve that issue if the cable can't be buried. Since it supposedly fits existing Dish network type posts I could go up on my roof and put it where my current wireless p2p internet antenna is but I was trying to keep it simple and accessible from the ground.
