Not sure it has been posted yet, but I got this in an email today.

Starlink is excited to announce Portability as an add-on feature for all Starlink customers. Portability enables customers to temporarily move their Starlink to new locations and receive high-speed internet anywhere where Starlink provides active coverage within the same continent. To see active coverage areas, please view the Starlink Availability Map.

You can enable Portability for $25/month on your account page. Once enabled, Portability will take effect immediately, and you can disable Portability from your account page at any time.

To learn more about Starlink Portability, please read our FAQ page.

Thank you for being a Starlink customer!

The Starlink team

Awesome news.   Thanks for posting that.  I will update the thread title.

Are there time limits to portability? I.e., if I permanently move it to another area.

How does starlink deal with people permanently relocating?

I’m 7 miles from an open cell.

I see this as a plus for the RV'er, people that have 2nd homes & etc.  My question is, can we get a 2nd Dish to for this & will the original the router work with a 2nd/new dish?  I'd like to use this option when we travel in the RV, but I don't want to climb up on the roof of the house to pull down the dish then put it back up when we return to do it.

Very good question.  The last thing I want to do is go up 40' to remove my dish when I spend the weekend up north.

I specifically didn't put mine on the roof for this reason. I put in on a second story deck instead. If you have the V2 dish, the cable is removable, so you can get a spare. That way if you want to take the dish somewhere, just disconnect it and leave the cable, take your spare cable and your router and you're good to go.

Yeah, I have the V2 and the plan is just to get another cable, but I put the dish on the roof to get it out of the way.  I didn't think about pulling it down to take it with me when I travel...

I'd like just to unplug the router and take it with the new cord and dish when I head out, that just seems easier.

My opinion, I am not paying another $25 a month so i can move my Starlink, even if it was no charge, don't think I would take it.  I'll just turn on my hotspot.  If I don't have service, I do not need internet.

If your a full timer, maybe it might be worth it, but now your looking at $135 for internet and most full timers at campgrounds.

According to the FAQ:

So you just turn on portability when you need it, and turn it off when you don't. Simple as that.

I got my  permanent mount yesterday and got it installed today.  One thing I don't understand is why there is so much rotational play between the antenna (I'm reluctant to call it a dish) and the stand or the mount I have now.  It seems like there's about 10 degrees of movement.  Apparently the antenna adjusts for movement, but if the winds blowing it seems like it would have to do that constantly.  I'm thinking about wrapping some duct tape around it.  Is everyone else's that loose?

Yeah, I wouldn’t pay an extra $25/mo to just use it a few times a year, but $25 for a month here and there is fine.

I have no skin in this game, but I would probably just do that. If you have had it installed for a few days and it doesn't seem to matter, don't mess with it. It could cause wear issues over time, though.

ETA: I had a loose trailer tow bar once and tightened it up with duct tape.. That som' bitch won't ever rattle, or even be able to be removed, after getting waterlogged.

Mine was the same.  I used duct tape to tighten the fit.  It's been on my roof line 40' up for a year now and we've had some pretty massive wind storms and it hasn't moved.

We take the RV out 10 or so times a year.  Not worth the additional $25 in my opinion.  It's good to unplug from the world at times.

That's only for holding the dish in the mount. It doesn't perform any ant-rotation function. Here's a section view of the mount I made. The interior of the mount was designed to match the mount that comes with Dishy. The notch cut out in the mount for that release button on Dishy is actually cut quite a bit wider than needed. The only purpose it serves is retention.

On the other side, there is a key built into the mount that interfaces with the keyway in Dishy's post. Here is a section view showing that feature. This is the part that serves to prevent rotation. This key in Starlink's mount is smaller than it should be if they intended to prevent any movement. In other words, there was a little slop. I widened that key in my mount to remove all slop.

Applies for certain people, as for me, by getting Starlink, I was able to get rid of Direct TV ($120) and stream TV, and my DSL ($50) which i could not stream anything.

So I am coming out a head by $30

One of my friends just got Starlink and he says he's having problems with the speeds slowing to a crawl periodically for 10-20 seconds at time.
Is that normal or is there something wrong with his setup?

Do you have the round or rectangular Dishy?

ETA: Nvm, I see your pictures above now. You're using a different mount. Interesting that it doesn't have that key built into it. The mount I designed mine after was the quadruped (floor) mount that comes with the Starlink kit.

Interesting. None of the islands are showing even a waitlist on the map. I doubt there is a base station within range. Probably will be reliant on the laser interlinks on the newer satellites.

its my understanding that is how Ukriane is being serviced. no ground stations..    or ground stations in poland then than leapfrogs over lasers to the next  one
If this had happened a few months ago.. Ukraine would not be able to have service.
