Putin isn't going anywhere, he is paranoid and has spent decades removing anyone that could possibly challenge him. Even if someone were to replace him that person would be just as paranoid as Putin is and their first piece of business would be to remove anyone that could challenge them. There was a lot of protesting and opposition to it back in 2003 and onwards, but it was also not long at all after 9/11, and the memory was still very fresh and the thirst for payback still warm enough.
