Another podcast episode of In Moscow's Shadows by Mark Galeotti has just dropped. It entails some interesting discussion of the most recent terrorist attacks, the summary of which is below. This goes into the terrorist attack in Dagestan, but also shines a bit of light on what's going on with Russian security forces in Russia itself.

. If the latest attack in Dagestan is a sign of coordinated and extensive terrorist attacks, it could not come at a worse time for Putin. However, attacks like this are not uncommon or unheard of in the North Caucasus. Still, it's larger than usual, and it's impossible to tell whether it's part of a larger trend.

. Dagestan is very poor - the fourth poorest region in the federation. Because of this poverty, there has been a disproportionate percentage of people fighting in the current war. As a result, there is more money kicking around, but also more guns. Admittedly, guns are also a fairly common part of life in the North Caucasus.

. Talk that the FSB has been neglecting terrorism investigation as they're busy suppressing internal dissent or dealing with the war in Ukraine is only partially true - and not the greatest challenge facing Russian security forces. Most FSSB staff previously working within counter-terrorism haven't been transferred out of their units. However, they aren't as easily able to call on additional resources, which is where Russia's main problem lies.

. The Rosgvardia is just as important as the FSB when preventing and responding to domestic terrorism. They do the "heavy lifting" of internal security work, such as guarding public and government sites, effecting arrests, etc. It does have 360,000 personnel, but half of those are simply unarmed guards, who are basically hired out to man metal detectors at shopping malls and such. So, the real numbers are more like 180,000 scattered all across the country. Around 250,000 of them are deployed within Ukrainian occupied territories, doing security and "pacification" operations behind the front line. These troops have had to come from somewhere, and some have inevitably come from the North Caucasus.

. If this is a "one of" (three off?) terrorist attack and isn't the start of prolonged campaign, it's not that big of a problem. But if it is, it will create dilemmas for Russian authorities with staffing.

. The Rosgvardia largely deals with localized crisis (e.g., putting down protests and riots). They focus their forces and bring elements in from across the country. A concentrated response to such events is more difficult in the current environment.

. Curiously, this time there wasn't any serious or sustained attempt to pin this attack on the west when compared to the attack on the Crocus City Hall. Some lower-level figures have claimed that the west was involved, but according to Galeotti, the same people blame the CIA, MI6, etc. for disappointing bowel movements, and that narrative hasn't really taken off.

. Even the more hawkish end of the Russian state apparatus warned against blaming the west. Instead, many have been publicly discussing threats inside Russia. There is risk that this could be the start of increasingly state-sponsored racism designed to unify Russians behind a common internal enemy. This is dangerous, though, as Russia's Muslim population is still increasing and very well-represented across the armed forces.

On the subject of Islam and Russia, it should be noted that both the North Caucasus and Central Asia have issues with religious radicalization. The rise of Islam in Russia due to fertility rates and immigration, and Russia quite possibly getting a Muslim majority in a few decades will be difficult to square with the current status of Russian Orthodoxy. Putin is such an imperialist that he's more pro-immigration than the European center-left, not to mention his ultranationalist allies. Most Russians don't support Putin's immigration policies, which is something Navalny tried to exploit, but Putin doesn't have to worry about votes or the opinions of little people, and the truth is that he has little choice due to labor shortages and demographic issues. It's honestly a ticking time bomb, and I wouldn't be surprised to see serious ethnic violence by Russian ethno-nationalists and non-Russian, heavily Islamic ethnic groups.

Training started off strong today. Most guys started with weapon collection from us and hitting the range today. We quickly got pulled from training to work in our regular roles. We are used quite heavily to keep the gears turning, and the guys with what they need.

Next week we will start with our specialized courses and I am still on the schedule for teaching four classes related to vehicles, recoveries, camouflage, and driving. Due to some personnel changes, I am now the 2IC of our team, as well as the garage manager, armorer, and anything else that needs to get done. It feels humbling sitting in the meetings with the decision makers, and having a voice now.

So needless to say the days are long and hot at the training grounds, but things are looking good for the future. The next weeks will be interesting and I look forward to it all. I hope the guys learn some things from us, and that we also pick up some new skills.

Good luck, I was assigned to dismount reconnaissance duties but my unit got a quick 2 day familiarization with vehicle recovery for Afghanistan and we started off rocky at the beginning but much improvement towards the end. Recovery under fire is no joke.

An update on ammunition deliveries. deadinua:

Since we have reached a new month, here is the usual summary of German Military Aid to #Ukraine for the past month (June).

DELIVERED
[...]
71,000 155mm shells
View Quote

Last month, Germany delivered 21,000 newly produced 155mm shells. That's a fairly considerable ramp up from the 10,000 shells delivered in January of this year. Czechia also confirmed that the first batch of rounds delivered from the Czech initiative were 50,000 rounds financed by Germany. Czechia stated that they will continue delivering multiple tens of thousands of shells per month. So, I think it's likely we can expect at least 50,000 rounds for the coming months too, if not more. Overall, the ammunition production ramp up seems to be producing results. More is definitely needed, but things are trending in the right direction.

Thanks man. The whole idea of much of our particular training is to keep the guys from getting stuck in bad places, and how to avoid many of the problems of driving in fucked areas. Also need to teach these boys basic maintenance. The things we see in the garage...

Chinese and Russian companies are developing an attack drone similar to an Iranian model deployed in Ukraine, European officials familiar with the matter said, a sign that Beijing may be edging closer to providing the sort of lethal aid that western officials have warned against.

A West Bank comedy in two parts:

My analysis in a @FDD Flash Brief:
“It’s time to acknowledge that West Bank Palestinian terrorist groups are growing more sophisticated in their attacks and have become a persistent threat to Israeli troops and civilians. Furthermore, IEDs have become a significant problem as the know-how to build them and their manufacturing capacity have increased. Given the current situation, Israel’s existing strategy is not resolving the violence. Alternative tactics are required to reverse the downward trajectory of the West Bank.”
View Quote

FDD analysis Joe mentions is in quote box below.
Latest Developments
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization claimed responsibility for a deadly roadside bomb attack in the West Bank on July 1 in which one Israeli officer was killed and another was seriously wounded. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Sgt. First Class (res.) Yehuda Geto, 22, was participating in a counterterrorism operation in the Nur Shams camp near the city of Tulkarem. An initial IDF investigation revealed that a Panther armored personnel carrier (APC) had been at a staging point, where improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were not initially believed to have been planted. However, after soldiers had exited from the vehicle, leaving two members of the unit inside, an IED detonated, severely damaging the carrier, killing Geto, and wounding a commando from the IDF’s Duvdevan unit, which carries out undercover operations in urban areas.

The bombing was the second recent attack by one of Islamic Jihad’s West Bank branches that resulted in an IDF fatality. On June 27, IDF sniper team commander, Capt. Alon Sagciu, 22, was killed and 16 troops were wounded in an Islamic Jihad roadside bombing in the West Bank city of Jenin.

That attack occurred during an overnight IDF raid in Jenin aimed at flushing out or killing Hamas terrorists in the city.

Expert Analysis
“The death of an Israeli soldier in a roadside bomb attack on an IDF vehicle in the Nur Shams refugee camp represents a dangerous new escalation by terrorist groups in the West Bank. Terrorist groups are increasingly seeking to exploit the power vacuum in the northern West Bank and areas such as Nur Shams in the city of Tulkarem. This terrorist entrenchment threatens to expand unless the IDF is able to contain and eliminate it.” — Seth J. Frantzman, FDD Adjunct Fellow

Alternative tactics are required to reverse the downward trajectory of the West Bank.” — Joe Truzman, Senior Research Analyst at FDD’s Long War Journal

Islamic Jihad Commander Eliminated in Nur Shams
On June 30, the Israeli military carried out an airstrike in Nur Shams, killing Saeed Jaber, an Islamic Jihad commander belonging to the organization’s West Bank Tulkarem branch. The IDF and Shin Bet said Jaber was responsible for numerous attacks on Israeli troops and civilians. An IDF source told The Times of Israel that Jaber was second in command of PIJ’s Tulkarem branch.

The site targeted by the Israeli military was a home used by Jaber and two other Islamic Jihad terrorists responsible for carrying out shooting attacks on the West Bank barrier and the Israeli community of Bat Hefer. The pair are also linked to the murder of Amnon Muchtar, a 67-year-old Israeli civilian from Petach Tikva, in the West Bank city of Qalqilya on June 20.

Since #Hezbollah initiated conflict against Israel on the northern border on October 8, 2023, and until July 1, 2024, there have been 2,295 attacks against Israel in the north, with the vast majority implemented by Hezbollah. 94.3% of the attacks against #Israel were carried out within 0-5 km from the border. Ukraine's allies have a quandary. We threaten others not to supply arms to Russia while we supply arms to Ukraine. We've supplied heavy weapons, medium range missiles, modern air defense, fighter planes (future TBD), AFV/IFV, rocket and tube artillery, small arms, transport vehicles, etc, etc. There's practically nothing left in the way of escalation to counter anything others might choose to supply to Russia. We can whine and stamp our feet, but that's about it. Limited sanctions for China, but DPRK & Iran are already fully sanctioned so there's next to nothing to do about them. This war could yet get bigger and uglier.

Europe, I hope you've been getting ready for more refugees.

The world is sprinting to WWIII. it’s time the west gets completely on an economic war footing.  We also need to somehow inspire the population to get on it as well.  We need major deterrence now to prevent this from getting worse.

China has a half dozen unique copies of the Shahed 131/136, which itself is a copy of the Israeli Harop.

The one they are building for use in Russia they named the "Sunflower" model about  a year ago. That really should have offered some foreshadowing as to what they intended to do with it.

There are a LOT of unique weapons systems sitting in queue from Russia, China, and Iran.

Thanks for the input.

I wonder how many of these “Sunflowers” they have already built and has Russia taken delivery of any yet.  It would be impossible for Ukraine to repel a few hundred drones at once.  Maybe that’s why we’ve been hearing in the news that the f16’s Ukraine is getting will be primarily used for air defense right away.

They had Arash for a long time, they hung on to it until more patriots showed up. There is a long list of systems being selectively unveiled the same way.

Europe, I hope you've been getting ready for more refugees.

MRBMs. Submarines. F117 or two. Robot torpedos.

I've felt like gifting Taiwan about 20 BGM 109Gs tipped with American sunshine and love might begat much peaceful consideration for a couple years now

1/17 Daily Ukraine map thread 🧵 for Tuesday 2nd July 2024

Highlights: Poltava Airbase struck by Iskander, in another strike on Ukrainian airfields

Krynky remains Ukrainian, with geolocation showing Ukrainian presence further west than we had marked.

Bakhmut area fighting remains heavy, but remains relatively attritional with Russian forces grinding forwards. If nothing changes in the area then Russian forces should capture the little district of Kanal and Kalinina some time in the near future. (Map)

We've seen no geolocations to prove these yet, but some dangerous ones from DeepState's map, showing some very bad things happening for Ukraine's front line right now.

1) Toretsk / Niu York in severe trouble with large Russian advances into the area which had been unmoved since 2022

2) Large Russian advance claimed into Makiivka in Kharkiv/Luhansk cutting the road

3) Sokil and surrounding areas captured by Russian forces

So we'll see if they're reacting to rumour, or if geolocations will emerge over the next few days.

I was thinking the same exact thing. I'm sure we could cough up some more old M109s from storage. And I really wish we were mass producing systems like Brutus and Hawkeye for Ukraine. These relatively simple, inexpensive, compact mobile platforms would be perfect for Ukraine's "shoot and scoot, then lets go hide in the woods" tactics.
