Don't wear coats, gloves, long sleeves, loose shirts, etc. around unguarded rotating machinery. And don't reach over/under/around unguarded rotating machinery till you've turned it off and locked it out properly.
Rules. There is usually a good reason for them. |

Lathe? Not sure I want to watch that one. Lathes can go from productive to closed-casket in a second.

That's awful.
The first thing I envisioned after watching this was an engineer walking into my office and asking if it was going to impact the delivery of his parts. |

|
Wow, worse than I expected...
I guess you could say he went to pieces over that accident... Obviously, closed casket or small box funeral. I wonder if his family knows how bad it was. Thats Horrible. |

Quoted: Lathes will fuck you up. Bad. View Quote Yes, they most certainly will . Once it's got ahold of your poor ass, you're just along for the ride . Rotating machinery is very unforgiving...I'm fortunate to have worked on, and around them for almost 40 years and still have all my digits and limbs attached |

I actually knew someone who was killed by a lathe accident.
However, it wasn't what you might think. He was electrocuted. Apparently there was some kind of defect in the power control unit. |
|
holy fuck
I thought well at least that was over quick, then my god it got bad. That poor dude that got there first, probably not enough vodka in russia to forget that. |

Flo Rida - Right Round (feat. Ke$ha) (Official Video) [HD] |

When I was a medic I got a call once to one of the local canneries for a man caught in a machine. On arrival we found the guy I had gotten the sleeve of his rain jacket caught on the turnbuckle on the shaft of an ice machine. He was literally wrapped around an axle. I had to cut him out of there layer by layer. Traumatic asphyxia is not a pretty thing.

He reached over the spinning shaft. You don't do that.

I run a boring mill with a 25HP spindle motor. It’s scary enough.
I refuse to run an engine lathe with long sleeves or gloves, no matter how cold it is in the shop. Reaching over a spinning chuck? Attached File |

Jesus Christ never reach over to the back side of a spinning part like that.

Complacency, loose clothing, no machine guarding and working on a running machine = bad day

I have worked on engine lathes for about 15 years now (started in my teens) and have extreme respect for them.
The way he leaned over the spinning chuck with loose clothes on like that makes it look like he was drunk or something. Anyone who works on a lathe knows not to do half the things he was doing and wearing around a lathe. That was a brutal one though. Don't get complacent around machinery! I recall another video of a guy on a hi-lo jumping off to save his load from falling and he gets trapped under the hi-lo. What's left of him is dragged around in a circle as a smear for several minutes before someone notices. Failed To Load Title |

That took an unexpected turn for the worse.
That's a lot of horsepower. |

Quoted: If I have to reach over, I shut the fucker off, take it out of gear and watch where all my clothes and body parts are.......knowing full well that I should also probably kill the power too but I don't. View Quote My dad taught me to turn the machine (lathe, table saw, etc.) off AND unplug the cord, so that the switch couldn't be tripped accidentally. That's obviously a bit overkill with modern safety switches, and I can't say I follow the rule to that extreme every time... but he definitely instilled a very healthy respect of power equipment in me at a young age. |

Ugh. I can’t believe I actually made it through that one.
I suppose it was relatively quick. Maybe like being in a shark feeding frenzy. Dude that put up his arms encapsulated my reaction to the whole video |
