In some countries, one of the jobs of a Sargent was to shoot soldiers who showed cowardice and retreated in the face of the enemy unless ordered to do so. A soldier showing that kind of cowardice had a pretty solid idea that if he turned and ran, his Sargent would shoot him and kill him, so he might as well stay and fight where he had a chance of living. So there is historical precedence of this sort of thing.
