I sure love my Ruger GSR.

It's not the size of the barrel, it's how you use it.

I'll never have any thing longer than 22", I was always told that short barrels were a waste on magnum rifles. Yes, you get more velocity from a longer barrel, but how much is lost in short barrels is way over estimated. I've shot the same 210VLD/retumbo load in 26,24, and 22" barrels, from 26 to 22 I lost on average less than 40fps.
It is currently pushing a 210VLD @ 2950 and that is 4gns under max load, it will do 3000 but I haven't fine tuned the load, I can get 190s to just under 3300 also.

ETA: the proof

That was the first 10rds out of the barrel, a batch of 300 RUM 190VLD proof loads

That's a nice rifle. Too bad us left-handed folks don't have more options for actions and stocks.

I'm wanting to trim this down to 16.5" at some point:

Yes. They are accurate, the trigger is good, and they are well built and engineered. Mine cost me $4200 with only a 22" .308 barrel and kit and that was a pretty good deal for an anodized FDE with monopod model. It's a toss up which I like more... My AI AW or my DTA. They are both pretty awesome.

There are plenty of places to hunt around here where the longest shot you could take is about 100 yards.  Who wants to lug around a rifle with a 30" barrel when you're only shooting out to 100?  Some guys I know are using .460 S&W magnum revolvers in these areas.

Short barrels on precision bolt actions make baby Jesus cry.

Why do  you like it when baby Jesus cries?

I thought that was Palma shooters?

Either way, a side note to all this is tighter twist rates, like 1:8 for 308,300, etc.

In short it has the affect of spinning a top faster, the more RPM imparted on it the longer it will retain it, it really helps in the transonic zone. this one I haven't tested myself, but I've read about and seen some very intersting rifles setup this way, using short barrels to.

.308 and offshoots get all their velocity with 20-22 in.  Maybe even less with some powders.

No point at all in having any more barrel than that.

F-class shooters use 30" barrels.

Not to mention a longer sight plane.

I got a Remington 600 that has a factory short barrel 18.5" which feels really short

it is .243, kills deer great, and cost me $75

I have a lever with a 12" barrel which is fun

Saw this on another site, and I think it's cool as hell.  I wouldn't want one in .243, but .308 should work just fine.  Must hide credit card.
If this lovely beast belongs to you: excellent rifle, I'm jealous.

Built by Short Action Customs. Big Horn receiver, 1-10 Bartlein cut to 16.25 inches, APA bolt knob, 30BA brake, jewel trigger, ARC rings, Nightforce 2.5-10x32 mil/mil ZS, Rock Solid chassis and AW mags. I've taken it out to 600 with Southwest 175s and kept it MOA with that optic. Well under moa at 200. Can't wait for my 30BA to clear.

My Remington 600 in .308, cut to 16" and suppressed, with a "scout" mounted scope and YHM suppressor.  It's almost the exact same length and weight as a 24" M700 PSS, but much quieter.

You're going to love that 30BA.  Mine is plenty quiet and it tightens up my groups.  Be sure to put a little grease on the threads and tighten it down medium hard before you shoot. Check the tightness often the first few times you shoot it and there after if you get it hot -cold - and hot again.

No, NVD tri-rail is optional. It's a work of art, and mates with the forend so well that you aren't able to see the joint in the pic.  Rock Solid Stocks on facebook has the most info.

Rock Solid doesn't supply mags, but yes, they are made to accept AICS or AW mags. I use both with different ammo in each.
