Ford Owners Won't Need The Tesla App To Supercharge

"When Ford announced last spring that EV customers would soon have access to Tesla Superchargers, it kicked off what would become 2023's hottest EV trend. Just about everyone opted into the Supercharger network, with promises of adapters ahead of full-scale integration. A full picture of how it'll work, though, hasn't come into focus. We know Ford EV owners will start getting adapters this spring, and now we know that they won't need to install any new apps.

Ford Model E spokesperson Marty J. Günsberg confirmed in an email to InsideEVs that Ford owners would be able to use their FordPass app and BlueOval Charging Network account to access Tesla Superchargers. That means they won't need to deal with extra accounts or payment systems, a lynchpin of the BlueOval Charging Network. The "network" is really a linked account to access a variety of third-party chargers, including stations owned by Electrify America, ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, and, soon enough, Tesla. Ford says the functionality will work with V3 and later Tesla Superchargers.

"[The BlueOval Charging Network] provides one seamless stored payment account through the FordPass App, or the in-vehicle’s touchscreen, that eliminates the need for onsite credit card use. Once owners have created a BlueOval Charge Network account, they can then select, activate, and pay for BlueOval Charge Network charging by using the FordPass 'View Chargers' functionality" Günsberg wrote in an email, noting that this will all apply to Supercharger sessions. That means you should be able to locate and activate Tesla Superchargers directly from your Mach-E or F-150 Lightning's in-car infotainment system."

EVgo Will Add More NACS Connectors To Its Charging Network

EVgo, one of the largest EV charging networks in the United States, announced that it plans to expand deployments of North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging connectors at its fast chargers across the country.

The decisions was announced on June 12, following Ford and General Motors' switch from the Combined Charging System (CCS1) charging connector to Tesla's NACS.

For EVgo, this is not the first try to include NACS and to get access to Tesla electric vehicles, as the company already deployed integrated Tesla connectors at some of its stations in 2020-2021. It was a special case in the industry, because EVgo had no access to Tesla's proprietary charging solution at the time. The company simply integrated CHAdeMO to Tesla adapters to its DC fast chargers with all the limitations (up to about 50 kilowatts of power). Tesla incorporated those locations into its navigation system.

There are no details about the expansion plan, but EVgo says that it intends to add NACS plugs to its new chargers, as well as to some existing chargers.

Stellantis To Finally Adopt Tesla's NACS Plug Starting In 2025

Stellantis officially announced its adoption of the upcoming SAE J3400 (aka NACS) charging connector in its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) models in North America. The company said it will start with select models in 2025, later mentioning "2026 model year" EVs.

During the transition period, Stellantis also intends to make adapters available for older vehicles fitted with the Combined Charging System (CCS1) port.

Interestingly, Stellantis does not say anything about plug-in hybrids, which are the company's main electrified segment, with over 142,000 sales in 2023. However, we assume that PHEVs will also get the new SAE J3400 charging connector at some point in the future.

Stellantis was notably silent about Tesla in its press release, despite SAE J3400 being essentially a standardized version of the Tesla-developed charging connector. Tesla called its charging solution the North American Charging Standard (NACS). It will be adopted by Ford, General Motors and basically all other large automotive groups in North America.

For now, there is no word about an agreement between Stellantis and Tesla, especially regarding the access to the Tesla Supercharging network. Most OEMs that switched to NACS announced that their EVs will have access to the Tesla Supercharging network (natively or through adapters), so Stellantis is the odd one out.

Tesla spotted filming NACS video with non-Tesla EVs at Supercharger

"Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) has been adopted by the majority of automakers in the United States. It was then no surprise that the electric vehicle maker has been spotted filming what seems to be a promotional video featuring its Supercharger Network and a number of non-Tesla electric cars.

Images of the filming session were posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, by @houmanhemmati. As per the social media user, the video was being filmed at Tesla’s large 62-stall Santa Monica Supercharger. Notable non-Tesla EVs that were spotted on the site included the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the GMC Hummer EV. Tesla’s own EVs, like the Cybertruck, were also present."

Ford CEO tests out Tesla NACS adaptor at a Supercharger site

"Ford CEO Jim Farley was testing out a Tesla NACs adapter at a Supercharger site. Farley visited a Supercharger in Northville, Michigan, to test its Tesla NACS adaptor with an ultra-red Mach-E.

The legacy automaker is by far leading the pack when it comes to moving toward enabling Tesla Supercharger access to its EV drivers. In January, Farley announced that eligible Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners in the United States and Canada could reserve a NACS adapter to access Tesla Superchargers.

Last week, a NACS adaptor was listed on Ford’s parts catalog. The NACS adapter was priced at $1 and quickly removed from the site. Some Tesla owners observed that the NACS adaptor posted on its parts catalog looked similar to Tesla’s Magic Dog Adapter."

Ford announces Tesla Supercharger access to F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E drivers

Ford electric vehicle owners can now charge their cars at Tesla Supercharger locations across the United States and Canada, giving drivers of the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E access to the most expansive charging infrastructure in the world.

The move, which was agreed to between the two companies in early 2023, gives Ford EV drivers access to over 15,000 Tesla Supercharger locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Ford is also offering its Fast Charging Adapter, which will enable the cars to use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector.

The adapter will be available to new and existing customers enrolled in the BlueOval Charge Network for free through June 30, 2024. It is required in order for Ford EVs to charge at Tesla Superchargers.

The adapter will be complementary if ordered by the June 30 deadline. After that, it will cost $230.

The charger will be available for order starting today, February 29, at ford.com/FastChargingAdapter. You will be required to enroll in the BlueOval Charge network in order to obtain the adapter.

Eventually, Ford EVs will adopt the Tesla NACS connector. This will occur in 2025, and these vehicles will not need an adapter.

Tesla to expand Supercharger Network to other EV makers in March

Tesla will expand Supercharger Network access to other electric vehicle makers in March, the company confirmed today.

This morning, Tesla and Ford officially launched their Supercharger partnership, giving all F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E drivers access to the company’s expansive network of EV chargers.

Ford is just the first of many companies that will have access to the Supercharger Network, with more and more automakers joining what CEO Elon Musk called the “NACS coalition” over the next year.

In March, more companies will gain access to the Superchargers in the United States and Canada, Tesla confirmed.

Those automakers are:

   Rivian
   General Motors
   Volvo
   Polestar

It is expected that these companies will also be releasing an NACS adapter, just as Ford did, before they eventually adopt the connector altogether.

It's not just that Tesla has more electric vehicle fast-chargers than anyone else. They just work better, too. But starting with Ford's EVs, a lot more cars are about to be using those stations as they open up access via new charging adapters. Will the Tesla Supercharging experience be just as good when it has to power so many new and different cars?

If a test of Ford's new Fast Charging Adapter is any indication, the answer is: so far, so good.

Our man Tom Moloughney from the State of Charge YouTube channel was among the first to actually use a Ford Fast Charging Adapter at a Tesla station yesterday, thanks to the folks at Ford, who met him at one of his local stations so he could try it out on his F-150 Lightning. (I should note that Tom did this charging test immediately after flying home from the Arctic Circle, where he was testing a Polestar 3 prototype; the man puts in the work, folks.) You can see his full preliminary test in the video above.

As InsideEVs reported yesterday, the Ford Fast Charging Adapter is available to all Ford EV owners free of charge until June 30. It can be ordered online or via the FordPass app. Starting July 1, it costs $230, including taxes and shipping. The unit is rated to take up to 1,000 volts and 500 amps.

The adapter has no communication protocols, so it technically should work with all EVs and not just Ford's, but there are software authentication issues with Tesla's network that may prevent that. Then again, maybe not—stay tuned at the end of Tom's video for more on that front.

There are some caveats to Ford's adapter. It does not work with older V2 Supercharger stations, so use Ford or Tesla's apps to determine compatible ones, and it only does DC fast charging; this will not work with the standard Tesla destination chargers. But it's still a huge coup for Ford drivers.

In the video, Ford rep Jovina Young said the safety features of the adapter and how it interacts with the vehicle and charger to prevent any overheating or accidental removal. It's being issued to owners of the Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit van. "We expect demand is going to be much higher than supply to start," Young said, so put in an order if you haven't already.

Demand for the adapter is high as hell with delivery already stretched past July at this point.

Tesla Supercharger network opens to Rivian vehicles

"Tesla’s Superchargers are now opening to Rivian vehicles, following the addition of Ford to the charging network just a few weeks ago.

Last week, Rivian deployed software update 2024.07.02, with the release notes saying that Superchargers would soon be opening up to Rivian vehicles. On Monday, Rivian officially announced on X and in a press release that its vehicles can now access Tesla’s more than 15,000 Supercharger stalls in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, the automaker plans to start shipping free NACS DC adapters this spring, prioritizing long-time owners."

Plug and charge with it all done through Rivian app is nice, I look forward to never using an EA charger again.

Tesla Supercharger NACS access clarified by TSLA Exec

"Tesla executive Rohan Patel clarified some facts about Supercharger NACS access for non-Tesla vehicles like Rivian and Ford.

Patel—Tesla’s Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development—recently replied to a question from Teslavangelist, who questioned the number of Supercharger stalls non-Tesla owners actually had access to with NACS connectors.

Tesla recently opened the Supercharger Network to Ford and Rivian electric vehicles (EVs) through its NACS connecter. Both automakers claim that NACS connectors provide Ford and Rivian owners access to over 15,000 Tesla Supercharger locations. Teslavangelist pointed out that non-Tesla EV owners only have access to V3 and V4 Superchargers, doubting they have access to 15,000 Supercharger stalls.

Patel clarified that Rivian and Ford EV owners actually have access to 16,000 Supercharger stalls. He explained that around 11,000 Superchargers are exclusive to Tesla customers, most of which are V2 stalls.

“Multiple stations being added every week, and really our only limiting factor is utility interconnection which takes too damn long,” posted Patel on X.

Grok further explained that Tesla has more than 2,100 Supercharger stations and over 20,000 stalls in the United States. Rivian and Ford NACS users have access to a portion of those Superchargers. Rivian rolled out an infotainment update that helps owners find which Tesla Supercharger stalls are compatible with NACS connectors, making trip planning easier. "

I don't understand the numbers.  Provide numbers for V2, V3 and V4 chargers and how many of each are available to non-Telsa vehicles.

Lightship adopts NACS standard

"Lightship, a next-generation RV startup founded by Tesla alumni, has announced that the company would be adopting the electric vehicle maker’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its products. These include its debut RV, the L1, which is expected to enter production sometime in late 2023.

Lightship announced its NACS adoption on its official account on X. The announcement was accompanied by a short video of Lightship Head of Software and Controls Engineering Troy Nergaard explaining why Tesla’s NACS was the best choice for the company’s purpose-built, aerodynamic, all-electric travel trailers.

“We’ve made the decision to go with an NACS system. And that’s, you know, I think the way the industry is moving. But it makes sense for us as well. It’s an efficient use of space and it allows a high rate of charge at the appropriate charger. And then the charging stations frankly are quite reliable and work extremely well for the user. As Tesla starts to open those up, we’ll hopefully have access to them as well, and provide that sort of service for our customers. It’s becoming the sort of de facto standard and it’s been fun to watch that over time,” the Lightship executive noted."

Official GM NACS Adapter Now Available To Order- Tesla Supercharger Access Within Grasp

General Motors electric vehicle owners rejoice, the highly anticipated Official GM NACS Adapter is now listed in the GM parts system. When it starts shipping, the adapter will bridge the gap between GM EVs and Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network. As we reported last month, GM EV Access to the Supercharger network is imminent.

As a GMC HUMMER EV owner and someone who has experienced the convenience of charging at a Tesla Supercharger with a Magic Dock adapter built in, I’m excited that we’re one step closer to using over 15,000 Supercharger stations.

Although no official announcement has been made, today I confirmed and placed an order with my dealer for the official GM NACS Adapter. Part number 85090442 is in the system, but the adapter is not yet in stock.

GM NACS Adapter, Not Free But Affordable

One of the most appealing aspects of the Official GM NACS Adapter is its price point. At only $26, it is remarkably affordable, especially when compared to third-party options available in the market, which can range up to around $200.

GM's Supercharger Access Plan Is Still On Schedule, Despite Tesla's Layoffs

" Right now, only Tesla, Ford and Rivian EVs can access America's best fast-charging network. But GM EV owners have nothing to fear. Supercharger access is coming on the original timeline, which means very, very soon.

"We plan to stick to the timeline that we previously announced, and that's kind of all I can say," Sanaz Marbley, director of global strategic technology communications at GM, told InsideEVs.

I confirmed that the original timeline said that access would open up in spring of 2024.

"I think spring 2024 is accurate," she said.

Spring ends on June 20. So if GM is going to deliver on that promise—and Marbley seemed plenty confident—that means the Supercharger network should be open to Bolt, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq within the next three weeks."

Tesla Supercharger access for several brands has been delayed

"Tesla Supercharger access for several brands that adopted the company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) has been delayed, according to a new report.

This Spring, General Motors, Polestar, and Volvo were all set to gain access to Tesla’s robust Supercharger Network in North America. 15,000 total stalls were set to be opened to non-Tesla EVs, making charging more available for EV drivers across the United States and Canada.

However, Tesla decided to lay off many members of its Supercharging team earlier this year as part of widespread layoffs enforced to help sustain cash. Tesla let go of two high-level executives, including Rebecca Tinucci, the Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure.

Now, it appears the layoffs are starting to show their impact as several companies that were planning to gain access to the Tesla Supercharger network have had their dates pushed back.

According to PC Mag, General Motors and Polestar both confirmed in statements that their dates of access were pushed back from Spring to Summer.

Polestar reps said their timeline “had been adjusted to later this Summer.”

Meanwhile, General Motors pushed back their anticipated purchase of its NACS adapter, which would allow owners of their EVs to plug into Tesla Superchargers."

My NACS adapter is scheduled to ship in August. We'll see if that actually happens.

Level 2 units top out at 48 amps 240V.  They can also be set to several lower amperage ratings with a commensurate increase in charging time.

Some EVs can charge at 80A. They require a dedicated 100 amp circuit.

Tesla adds Mercedes to brands that will soon get Supercharger access

"Tesla has added an additional company to the list of electric vehicle (EV) brands that will soon gain access to its Superchargers, after every major automaker in the industry last year gradually adopted the company’s North American Charging Standard (NACS).

Although Tesla opened its Superchargers to EVs from Rivian and Ford earlier this year, the company is planning to gradually roll access out to other EV brands at some point. Tesla has previously said that the next automakers to get access to the charging network will include General Motors (GM), Polestar, and Volvo, though the company has now added Mercedes-Benz to that list, as was spotted on its website this week.

Tesla hasn’t said when it plans to open the Supercharger network to the aforementioned brands, and mass layoffs at the company affecting the charging department were reported to be delaying some of those plans. However, Tesla’s addition of Mercedes to its NACS access web page may be a good sign for owners of other EVs.
