Wood shop teacher sent me a picture of what he'd like to see his students working towards on the long ship dragon heads. Pretty cool. Can't wait to see where the kids go with it.

Well, I'm back today.
Kids will be back on Monday. I messed with replacing one of the motion lights non-working motors with an replacement motor I ordered back before Christmas. They don't work. AC. Pretty sure they need to be DC.  Once I hooked up the old motor to the housing again, it of course worked again.  I'm wondering if they are getting hot? I drilled some holes in the housing of one to allow air to flow a bit. We will see if it keeps working like that.

Everything about this thread is made of 100% pure AWESOME. Man I wish i'd had teachers like that when I was a kid, wish it even more for back when I had school-age kids.
It's inspiring as can be, making want to start on a sculpture project i've had on the backburner for some time, and giving me some great tips for when I do so, thanks OP!

Students are back!!!!  FB41 surprised us with a donation of a very cool magnifying glass.  Should be awesome for details, specifically in small sculpture settings. @FB41 THANK YOU!!!!!He added a bit of nice confetti for freshman to enjoy when opening.    Avoiding all the confetti coming out on their desks.     Where we left in December.    More small teeth going in this morning.  We need a hundreds of scales, and need them soon. I'm going to pick up more spray foam later today or tomorrow morning.

Update 1/9/24
We got back into the swing of it pretty quickly yesterday with good progress made. We had a shuffle of some people to different hours of the day, as well, as to different tasks/projects. Should be a great semester. These freshman wanted to help out, and worked on scales during our "Panther Time", a study time during the day.  We wanted to get the smoke and fire started on the Abby display. Students glued wire to the wall to help support and sculpt the smoke that will be coming from the monastery. Later we got lights into the structure itself, and they will wind up the smoke plume, as we did last year.  We began some details on the castle wall yesterday. These are tile we cut for the tower. We have plenty of extra pieces that have been cut off, and they work pretty well for this purpose. We started to add them to the towers on the wall, but I'm not happy with how that looks, so we will probably cut individual pieces for those and rework them. I think the pieces we have precut are too wide to put on the round tower tops.   Next floor of our castle is also underway.  The dragon's face continues to get plastic between the scales and over the LEDs. We will add paint next.  More scales were added to the dragon's neck, and the guys cut off the spikes one at a time right behind the head and started adding antler tips to replace them. We are all out of antlers at this point, and no more donations have been made that way, so we will see what happens. I have a nice 5x5 bull in my garage that is currently just holding my toy rifle from childhood. It may end up getting sacrificed to the dragon gods. It's a nice bull, but I've shot enough and have plenty displayed so this one won't be missed too much. I guess.   The tips look pretty good on the neck of the dragon.   We are working to get more lights on the body of the dragon. We will do the wall side first, then start on the hallway side.  |

Update 1/10
We are painting around the abby and getting wire up to sculpt our smoke and fire coming out of the structure.   Tile work continues.  Work on the long ship also continues. We are seeing progress. We might be done by the end of the year.  The ghost ship is getting a bit of a contour problem fixed.  The dragon's body got more lights along the torso yesterday. We have some plastic to fix today, then more lights towards the tail.  Large scales being made to cover the body. It's starting to sink in to the students how many we will actually need.   New quality light came for the Uboat display. We played around with where to put it yesterday and have one more spot we want to try before working on getting it mounted.  Details on the castle continue, and we are working on secondary buildings on the 2nd tier today.

With how well they did the horns, I'd think they could make some organic looking stubs to decorate the neck now that they have so many examples to work from, rather than sacrificing more racks to the dragon. They have the bone staining down pat, and making a curved cone with a rounded tip can't be all that hard.

Update 1/11/24
We got a few pieces of our keel carving done in CAD yesterday. These will go on the ghost ship keel. Not sure we will use them on the long ship or not. Still weighing the idea of carving those with the router.   Obviously, we will paint and add a patina.  More small antler tips for front teeth on our dragon. I need to find someone to get up and add paint and stain to what needs it soon.  We also need to start adding stain to the plastic that is on the face of our dragon. The lift has been busy at the wrong times right now, and limiting student's access to higher parts of our project.  Students are working to get more large scales stained with acrylic so that we can get them installed.  Tall students are put to work with the 10ft ladder.  Lights and smoke going up above Lindisfarne Monastery.   We did finally straighten up the buildings and tower once we were done with the lights. We didn't leave it this wrecked.   The wing for the dragon is looking pretty dang good. We are going to start adding muscle today.  More long ships for our coastal town.   Secondary structures on the 2nd tier of our castle are starting to show up. Lots of discussion about what needs to go where, and what we want to add. Kids are having fun with it.   Not sure we are still set on this yet, but its another iteration to work on.  Finally, we got our expensive water light, and played around with the right spot for install yesterday. This will go in the Uboat and Liberty Ship display.  Should put some nice effects on our Uboat and sinking Liberty Ship. We will need to run an extension cord above the trim level later this week, or next. The light is heavy enough we need to use a substantial anchor in a stud, and the head custodian will get that done for us.  |

Update 1/12/24
Frozen Frantic Friday Edition. Current temps.... -18F, 23mph winds, snowing, -48F windchill. This guy didn't make it. He's getting a beard and mustache soon. More Viking crew members   Observation point going up on our castle.  Norse Goddesses in the making  Our dragon wing getting some meat on it.  My expert muralist is working on the seas and adding a bit of green in some areas.  Tackling the top edge of the hull has been more challenging than we thought it would. We think we have a system that will end up looking good.  Finishing up the plastic on the hips and tail of our dragon, and getting "light bulbs" of plastic around the LEDs on the forehead. "Light bulbs" was apparently the phrase and description I was failing at using to get the vision across to students. Once I used that description, they seemed to get what needed to happen around each LED.  We began adding scales around the front shoulders of the dragon yesterday afternoon. We want to get these areas done, so we can install the legs again. The use of only one lift is hindering work at times. We need three lifts some hours. I'd grab the other manlift, but it's a paint to set up, and has a very large footprint, so we will just get on with out it. Students are a bit frustrated with how the smoky skies are going, but they will get the hang of it with another day or two of practice. I'll pull a few more references from last year's project for them to look at.  |
