Stopped by the grocery store for some provolone cheese for tonight’s roast beef dip sammiches and saw the last bottle of Eagle Rare on sale for $40. I fent.

ER at $40 in this area is starting to get close to pre WuFlu pricing. Finally!

Guess HH is everywhere now. Had to grab one. Not a rye fan so didn't grab a knob creek.

Things I've learned from blind taste tests:

There are some bourbons I do not like.

Some bottom shelf bourbons will surprise you.

Acquisition cost, though a factor, has little to do with enjoyment of bourbon.

Don’t turn your nose up at twist off capped bottles.

My favorite bourbons are more expensive, but they are not the ones I thought they were.

After a 2-3 samples, it's increasingly difficult to pick a winner, so start with that high $ whiskey you like, but switch to something easier to obtain after the first couple of pours.

In summary, to steal a phrase: Bourbon is proof that God loves us and  wants us to be happy.

Last night, I asked the guy at a local shop if he ever gets Buffalo Trace and he said it's rare.  He also said the Weller Special Reserve, which I picked up a week or so ago, at a different store, is basically the same Bourbon*.  True or no?  I hope not, because I wasn't all that impressed with the Weller, at least as a sipper.  Maybe it's better in an Old Fashioned.

*ETA:  Fixed my misleading wording in this post.

In some states, yes that is true.

BT has smaller production numbers that some other distilleries, and they're the du jour brand at the moment so everyone scoops up anything they make as soon as it trickles out.

Actually, I worded that very poorly.  He said Weller Special Reserve is basically the same bourbon as Buffalo Trace.

Pretty sure that Weller has more wheat in the mash bill than Buffalo Trace.

Buffalo Trace and Weller Special Reserve are 2 different mash bills. They are not the same.

Hard pass. I've had my share of Woodford and have recently given my last bottles away. I just can't take the overpowering banana flavor anymore.

I originally preferred the Woodson Reserve barrel pick I bought, but now that my Weller Special Reserve has been open a couple of weeks. I prefer it.

Love that Bardstown Prisoner.

Running low on mine, and I have never seen it again.  Would love to find more.

The .750 W12 is $45 I think. This one is 1L and was $60.
The Weller full proof .750 should have been $60

The Weller full proof .750 should have been $60 but looking at the receipt I just noticed they only charged my wife $40 for the 1792 and did not ring up the full proof.
She won the spot in the lottery line because I entered her name and she knows nothing about bourbon or the price it should have been.

Oh well. It's her info on file so the popo will take her, not me.

You could sell that Weller 12 for over $300, people go crazy over it. I've had it and it's good but I don't get the hype over Weller

Saw that barrel (2 of them, I believe) when we toured the distillery this spring. Asked what the different color barrel lid meant, and the guide told us about it. And he nailed the price of $15k.

Tonight’s pour. The wife bought me this as a late birthday present. Ironically, it was probably gonna be the next bottle I bought to try, so that worked out.
