That one single aircraft caused the Japs a lot of pain, didn't it.
Foiled their plan.

Kinda.

We already broke their radio code but Strawberry 5 did confirm the party ruination

Weren't those the guys that hung torpedoes on PBY's or maybe even tried dive-bombing with them?

My grandfather flew them and it’s bigger brother in the Atlantic during WWII.

Here he is in the back center with his crew. Our family’s last name under the pilot window.

As a kid, I saw a Catalina take-off from Biscayne Bay (Miami). I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw in my young life. It just screamed ADVENTURE!

Folks usually name fighters if they had the wherewithal to buy a warbird. A PBY amphibian would actually be my first choice.

My dad built a scale radio control model of it a long time ago. He loved the PBY

Heroes all.

Edit
My first comic book style magazine about Midway had a PBY crew as central figures.
Early 70’s.

Damn straight.  If I was made of money, I'd have a PBY.  Maybe see what Basler could do with it

If I were filthy rich, I would buy a Catalina or one of the other flying boats long before I would buy a Mustang, Spitfire, Corsair, or Mosquito..    The yacht conversion of the Catalina is very cool.

Subs hate MPA.

Shit doesn't go sideways in the movie Greyhounnd until MPA has to RTB.  And all is well when MPA joins up on the other side.

MPA, first US forces onstation after Saddam invaded Kuwait.

I knew a guy 20 years ago that flew PBYs during WW2 in the pacific.
They mostly rescued downed airman or ship's crewmembers.
They spotted for subs when they weren't doing that.
He didn't really like the plane. We wanted to be a fighter pilot.

If I ever win the lottery, I am buying one of those and cherrying it out. Then I'll fly it everywhere!

It might be cheaper to buy a C130, but there is something about the old ww2 planes.

There's a story I read years ago called "Crew 6".
I wish I kept it.

A PBY crew gets shot down in the Pacific and gets ashore at some island.
They meet up with some guerillas and spend the next three years of the war as jungle fighters.
Some of the original crew were killed.
They rescued other downed aircrews to join their group.
Lived with the islander populations, fought the Japs.

One day your a Navy aircrew, the next day you're a foot soldier.

The WWII generation was amazing.

My grandpa was a PBY aviation ordinanceman and spent most of his time in WWII loading and servicing the Atlantic PBY fleet. May have worked on your grandpa's plane.

I still occasionally work in an old PBY hangar located in Seattle at former Sand Point Naval Station. Now they are just used as warehouses for NOAA equipment.

There was a Catalina that flew into Clearwater, FL years ago. The interior was set up as a home away from home. Who ever had done that work was a real perfectionist. It looked amazing inside.
The guy that owned it said he and his wife flew it all spring and summer to island getaways.

Wish I had pictures of it.

Last time I visited Whidbey Island to visit a friend working on the Prowlers up there, there was a PBY sitting on a hill on the way to the base beach. I wish I'd have had time to stop and look at it. I hope it isn't just going to be left there forever to rot away.

If I ran a Naval Air Station I'd send the new mechanics (and some of the new pilots to build a rapport with the mechanics who work on their birds) to work on that PBY to build comradery and educate them on their Naval history.

He did mention flying aboard a Ford Tri Motor. Noted it was LOUD.
