Interesting. I'm surprised there aren't more semi-auto guns out there, since parts kits are so cheap.

The Military Gun Supply kit are not for the novice builder. They're doable though.

These from IMA are best for the garage builder

Those kits are cheap for a reason. They're demilled right through the barrel locking lugs. Instead of the old Interdinace demills that avoided that area.

There was a torch cut kit on sturmgweher a while back for $750.. I have seen what Len@ historic arms does on a build. It is a lot of work and does not seem home builder friendly at all.

There are (not) many like it (in the US) but this one is mine. Transferable full-auto reweld.

The closest I ever got to one was when I went to the royal armory in Leeds, England. They had a cool demilled Bren gun there that was turned into a qualification range simulator.

Love to have a Bren gun, but would rather have the real slim shaddy, the ZB vz 26 ( I have even have a pic on my HD of one converted to 7.62x39 using AK mags).

Butchered POS cut through magazine well, mag catch and locking lugs. Hold out for one of the old Inter Ordanance kits if you can find one. Much easier to rebuild with cleaner cuts in non critical areas. They imported and demilled them about 10 years back.

In the Czech Army Museum in Prague, seems like there are ZB-39s everywhere. Probably one of the few weapon designs used on both sides in WWII.

Once the receiver is properly destroyed, it's no longer a machine gun, just scrap. You're essentially making a new receiver from scrap metal.

It's not a machine gun anymore. Now it's just scrap metal. Once a machine gun always a machine gun would apply if you found a bunch of full autos and tried to make them semi only...that wouldn't fly. But the firearm is destroyed with the demil process. Then another firearm is made when you reveled the receiver.

I have an IMI kit sitting in the corner right now. I bought it, sent it to Project Guns, and was told my receiver was too trashed to be rewelded :-/. They told me that it's a 50/50 toss up on on the IMI kit guns on whether the receiver is in good enough shape to reweld. It's low enough on my list of projects that I'm not willing to buy another kit hoping the receiver is in better shape.

I'm hoping someone comes out with an affordable Bren receiver, but until that happens my gun is staying in kit form.

There's a great thread on here somewhere of a guy that had his kit gun rewelded. It was the inspiration for me buying one.

The one photo at the range is definitely one I built...

If I were not so distracted by the "shooter" I might have been able to identify that one as well...

They take a crap load to time to put together (a compliant semi)...figure on about 40-60 man hours at a minimum...as far as calibers go there are alternatives such as 7.62x54R and .308 and others have been done. IMA parts are as posted a 50/50 chance of buildable. The real issue is where the torch went. If its cut through the locking shoulder/ mag catch area...forget it. Trunnion bore...forget it. It CAN be done, not cost effective. CNC has been tried, but the $2K+ price per stripped receiver (2005 price) was not cost effective.
