I like their equivalent of our " nutrition facts" label a bit better with the E codes.

The nationalized/government train systems don't suck.  Amtrak is an embarrassment for a first world country.  Either get the government out completely and let it die or fix it.

Decent and commonly availible low alcohol beers.

Train jokes from UK comedians are as cliche as "airline food is bad" used to be.  Maybe UK is an outlier and the rest of Europe does them well, but the trains are the most thoroughly and universally mocked subject I've ever heard in my life.

(info may be dated) 14 years in Europe total.

- When you buy a British lottery ticket, the tax is in the cost of the ticket. You win, you take home the entire jackpot, in cash, on a pallet if that's the way you want it. A guy did it that way while we were there.

- Europeans on the whole dress much better than Americans. They're quiet a bit slimmer, as well, though that's probably changing. Getting off an aircraft in America was a rude shock...I'd never seen so many morbidly obese people in my life.

- The attitude towards work is real. There were 16 nations represented on Geilenkirchen. Mid-July, the US and Canada ran the place, because everyone else was on holiday. Our NATO secretary told me she could identify Americans and Kanucks by the speed of their footfalls...we generally walk much faster (her desk was right at the entrance to the commanders office, at the end of a long hall). I watched her do it. Pretty impressive.

- German work standards are very high. Damn near everything requires a certification, and for the most part shit gets fixed right the first time. Our Dutch movers considered themselves "professionals". They took out an upper story window, installed a mobile elevator and got stuff up on the second floor I wouldn't have believed. Clean, pressed overalls, on-time and sober. They don't pick up a couple of guys from the Lowes parking lot every morning. They were actually fairly impressed by how our stuff arrived (I tipped the Florida crew generously). The foreman told me "Please convey our best wishes and compliments to our American colleagues"...and he meant it.

They don't have our puritanical obsession about nudity being the ultimate taboo. American media will depict the most brutal and gory forms of violence imaginable but a naked woman? That might be disturbing to the kids. And we wonder why we're the ones with the largest mass violence problem amongst advanced countries. If porn is the only time nudity is avalible then that warps the way the human body is seen, as only being a dirty thing to always be ashamed of.

Work/life balance, trade guilds, public education, and public transportation.

I don’t want to mirror Europe’s work ethic...but we can take some lessons from them.  The goofy social customs during the work day are not needed.  Employers expecting 50-70 hrs of work for extended periods of time from their work force isn’t healthy and I wish we would re-think that model.  Riding on those coattails, vacation and even sabbaticals are part of their work culture.  Time off is viewed just like any other benefit and not an imposition.

I work for euros right now. It’s frustrating to try and get stuff done with half of anyone unavailable at any given time.

This is why the eurosphere is in decline.

I'm not very familiar with Europeans, nearly all of my "travel time" was in Asia.

Speaking of my most recent trip, Indonesians have a lot up on Americans.

1).  Very friendly or at least courteous.  I honestly did not meet a single unfriendly person and I am a very out-going person.

2).  Nearly all are physically fit.  I'm not turned on by very many Asian girls but nearly all of them were hot just because they weren't fat.

3).  I was tipping every store clerk I met, because they'd knock each other down to get to you and do everything for you!  They wore their uniforms with pride.

4).  They do a job like gang busters!  I found one German cockroach in the rented apartment and my fiance called the owner the next day.  The day after that here comes a security guard, two or three workers, and the bugman.  All in uniform and all took off their shoes at the door.

5).  They dress nice.   No pajamas and flip flops.

(In our case, we had the bugs under control, our first "date" was to the department store to get glue boards and roach bait, the exterminator actually complimented the actions).

So what could Americans do?

Work harder
Care about their appearance
Get fit
Be friendly to others

*Reads all this nonsense about "free healthcare". Puts down his coffee and cracks nuckles*

It isn't free. It is in fact, very very expensive.

I'm European. Hell, I'm Belgian, we practically invented Europe. Sorry 'bout that.

Anyway. I'm going to fuck up this thread, by turning it around. What could us Europeans learn from Americans;

-The road to success is an individual thing. It's up to you. If you want to succeed, you can have it all. But you have to want it, and you have to work for it.
-The Social System is sucking us dry. In Belgium (an extreme case, I know) we pay 40,2% tax on our wages. After tax, my accountant wife makes 1600EUR or 1900USD. I take home 2200EUR or 2700USD as a SNCO. If you don't work for whatever reason, you have a guaranteed minimum wage of 1200EUR or 1400USD. That is BEFORE benefits, social security or assistance, or unemployment pay. On everything else, we pay a VAT of 21%. Twenty. One. Percent. Yeah our healthcare is free. But we pay for it. Also, European open border policy is a deathsentence. Asylumseekers set one foot on our soil and they're in. Free healthcare. Free housing. Free utilities. Free this. Free that. Meanwhile, a nursing home is quickly becoming unpayable for retirees that worked all their life, and paid their taxes.
-Our military is a joke. As NATO member we pledge to spend 2% of our GDP on Defence. We are required to do so. We consistently fail to meet this obligation. One day we will pay the price for this. And it's not going to be pretty.

To you all. No matter how shit your personal situation is, no matter how bad US politics get, remember this. You have freedom. Real freedom. You might not think you do, you can even say it's under attack. But you still have it. Don't change, don't try to emulate Europe. The world needs a balancing factor, and you're it. Still.

EDIT; but yeah, eat less, eat more healthy, and exercise more.

Not a month goes by without me spending an evening researching how I could make a move to America. If the stars ever align, I'd make that move in a heartbeat.
