Quoted: Was that the spirit of Washington, president Washington who said to avoid foreign entanglements? Embrace isolation in his farewell address. View Quote When Washington was president, America was nearly bankrupt. We had no navy and an army that could not defend Washington DC. The War of 1812 proved isolationism was a bankrupt concept. What would you advocate? Times, circumstances, and economics changed by 1853. In that year, we ditched isolationism and with our fleet in their harbor as a show of force, we opened trade with Japan while the Emperor was taking a shit. We are threatened globally and we must respond globally. It isn't about living in the past, we must deal with the present. |
