First Blood was on Pluto TV tonight so I watched it while I was doing something else.
Is there a particular reason why Sheriff Teasle used a Heckler & Koch HK93A2 and his deputies used M16s? Did the director / writers just want him to stand out or differentiate himself from the other sheriff deputies? Or was there another reason? |

I would have wanted an M-16 instead of that eurotrash rifle with shitty ergonomics and shitier sights.

Quoted: That's the most likely reason. It was pretty common for prop houses to have an assortment of guns for this stuff and they would give standout characters more unique looking guns for greater screen presence. There was an episode of the 70s television show “S.W.A.T.” where a terrorist group all used HK93A2s against the M16 equipped cops. |

It's fiction and all, but I just assume he brought a personally owned rifle and everyone else got theirs from the armory.

Seems logical, probably much the same reason why they gave the character of Vincent Hanna a Mini-14 in Heat. Or why Karl had a G3 in Die Hard. |

It's kind of an easter egg for gun literate viewers that explains Sheriff Teasle's hostility toward John Rambo, whom he perceived as a poor.

So- you have never experienced management wanting the best thing, like a new car, while the troops get the worn out one with 100k miles on it? Or a perceived “better” gun, etc?
It is almost a fucking perfect way to evaluate a leader in LE. If they prioritize themselves, they are shitty. If they prioritize the troops (of their own choosing), they are usually pretty good. Have seen it many times… |

Quoted: In reality a kingshit cop in Jerkwater USA of the time would not have a rifle at all. The town in that movie was almost a carbon copy of the town I grew up in at that time. Same size town. Same dickhead cops. Same super dickhead sheriff. None of the LE had rifles in their patrol cars in our town at that time. It wasn’t long after though. A friend of mine from high school at that time was son of city police officer. His dad had a personal Colt AR with the “Property of the US Government” stamp on it. We thought it was pretty cool. Not as cool as this starry bra but cool. |

In Leon/The Professional, the NYPD ESU had a very odd assortment of rifles.
https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/L%C3%A9on:_The_Professional#Rifles HK93s, Sig 540/543s, Sig 551s, Beretta SC70s, Galils, Mini-14s, and M16s. It's almost as if the unit was mostly made up of gun guys who liked imported weapons and were allowed to use personal weapons on duty... in NY of all places. |

Classic case of movie BS
Most cops in 1982 usually had a pump shotgun No rifle If they had a rifle, it was a 30.30 or a mini14 |

He was a cop. Ergo, correctly portrayed as the average cop. Also known as, a piece of shit.

If it was today it would probably mean that HK only got one product placement deal I dont think that was such a thing at the time that movie was made.

I just watched First Blood the other night and wondered the same thing. I presumed it was for the same reason all the cops are wearing bright white hats in the forest as they're hunting Rambo - it's to make them stand out and be more recognizable to the audience.
Saw some of "The Great Raid" the other day and noticed the same thing. Enemy camp commander had these HUGE white shirt collars that stuck out from his uniform. Easy to identify him in the scenes where they were running around in the dark with things exploding. |

The wife hadn’t seen First Blood since it came out, so we watched it last night on Pluto also. And then it’s mentioned on Arf today. Que the Twilight Zone theme song And I wondered why the sheriff had a different gun. I’m assuming that police departments were getting free M16s from the government in the early 80s. Anybody know if that’s accurate? |

The bigger question is:
Why Did They Edit In Those Stupid Fake M-16 Firing Sounds? That has irked me for years. |
|
Real answer? Because he was the final boss and needed a different gun to separate him from the goons.

Why did he get that sheepskin coat, while all the deputies had to wear stuff from Galls?

I always thought the Sheriff's Dept building was pretty nice and big and modern for the way they were trying to portray the place as small and podunk.

Brian Dennehy was a cool ass mofo. He probably chose it because it’s badass.
I don’t know that. I just liked the dude as an actor. |
