We are still evolving, we have simply reduced the effect of natural selection.  Evolution will push us in the direction that produces the most surviving offspring. We have removed the need to feed them and the effects of many deleterious diseases.  For those reasons we are not evolving in a direction that produces what most would consider a positive direction.  But you can't escape evolution, the same way you can't escape gravity.

Idiocracy is real.

"Most surviving offspring" may not always result in long-term survival of a species.

Evolution is a mindless process that preserves genetic information from one generation to the next through selection.  We are engineering around things that would have selected some people out.  It is quite possible that we have gotten too clever for our own good.

Given that the Theory of Evolution has species changing to adapt to their environment and, given that (at least in the West) we've changed our environment to suit our needs, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the nature of evolution, per se, is going to change drastically.

I agree that enhancing implants (e.g. IR receptors for the eyes, etc) will become more common, and that the people who survive and prosper will be the ones who's bodies don't reject such implants.

At least until a significant portion of the species lives in space or on other planets.

As for the comment about the average height increasing, I personally believe that's more a factor of good nutrition than it is of evolution.

we are only one massive volcanic event away from a selection process.  these geologic events will drastically change the availability of food and a favorable climate, and it happens every few hundred years or so. if a mega volcano erupts such as yellowstone, it may prove to be an extinction level event. the earth is not as stable as some of you think because several human lifespans can easily fit in between major eruptions.

Yes, here is a chart of the average height of Japanese women (in cm) by age as of 2013.  For evolution to be a factor in an observable physiological change, at least one generation has to pass.  Japanese born from about 1934 - 1968 achieved significantly higher adult stature within one generation, and it grew at a steady pace.

Source for the chart, with lots of other information

we are no longer evolving.  there is no evolutionary pressure prior to creating offspring.  most humans have equal chance of creating a child.  natural variation will rule the day not survival of the fittest.

So much misunderstanding of evolution in this thread.  Natural selection operates relentlessly regardless of the environment.  We are still evolving.

Bigger, stronger, faster, more intelligent doesn't mean more fit.  Nature doesn't give a shit about that, it only cares about your ability to pass your genes on to the next generation.

Human evolution is driven by two primary factors: sexual selection and parasite resistance.

If we learn how to manipulate the genome, we will have directed evolution,  if we leave this planet, we will also have multiple directions that will pull.

now for the bigger question-what direction will directed evolution take us.  If we are no ,longer limited by physical labor, there is limited need to design giants.  Dwarves need less food and smaller accommodations.  Elves might have some advantage (in space, maybe?), but can not see it.  If brain size is not a limiter, maybe hobbits?

There is no advantage to a male peacock's feathers either.  They are expensive, biologically speaking, and result in a greater chance of being seen and eaten by a predator. But they also signal pretty good fitness - so female peacocks have evolved into preferring elaborate plumage.  Once something like that takes root, it is really hard to go away from it - women prefer tall men over short men, so tall men will have greater reproductive success putting pressure on height regardless of any other operative utility.

Once nutrition allows everyone to reach genetic potential then natural selection will do the rest. Height is a big deal to women.

There will be a time where inorganic prosthesis will be more capable.

Eventually these will be replaced by gene therapy, and artificial organic implants.  Like having an organic computer or 4 in your body, new eyes, enhanced musculature, organs that are more efficient, etc... .

At that point there will probably not really be any reason to look any different unless you deliberately want to alter your appearance.  There will be people that genuinely look like an animal, real fur and so on.

So while the need to appear different will probably dwindle, the ability to look different may reach new extremes.

Evolution works generation to generation, it's target is not long term survival of a species.  Otherwise I don't see anything disagreeing with what I said.

Funny how every time I think about evolution I'm looking back and never considered what lies ahead.
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/humans-look-1-000-years-130000761.html
Humans are still evolving, So, where will evolution take us in 1,000 years?
Chances are we’ll be taller. Humans have already seen a boom in height over the last 130 years.
In 1880 the average American male was 5’7’’. Today, he’s 5’10’’.
We may also merge with machines that can enhance our hearing, eyesight, health, and much more. Right now, there are hearing aids that let you record sounds, generate white noise, and even come with a built-in phone.
Another example is a team out of the University of Oregon which is developing bionic eyes that help the blind to see. But it’s not impossible to imagine that this technology could become a tool for seeing what we currently consider invisible, like different energies of light such as infrared and x-rays.
There will eventually be a day where prosthetics are no longer just for the disabled.
However, it’s not just our outside appearance that will change – our genes will also evolve on microscopic levels to aid our survival. For example, an Oxford-led study discovered a group of HIV-infected children in South Africa living healthy lives. It turns out, they have a built-in defense against HIV that prevents the virus from advancing to AIDS.

Humans, on Earth will more or less be the same, though I think the expanse has done a pretty good job depicting the future of evolution for people. Not the alien stuff, but the earth/Mars/ space station stuff and how gravity effects human development and bone structure. Who knows what else will be going on but it's only a matter of time before were colonizing the solar system. Easy within 1000 years.

We've made our environment to fit our needs not the other way around. It will take drastic uncontrollable changes to our environment to invoke evolutionary changes in humans... Or 50 years of socialism which makes everyone poor and dumb.

It's part of it, but probably not all of it.  The trend seems to be continuing, even though cheap protein and good nutrition has been common for decades.  Some of that could also be from hormones in the meat we are eating.

Evolution has nothing to do with any arbitrary definition of improvement.  Because conditions change in unpredictable ways, a shift in alleles that makes sense now could be fatal later.
