I searched for them on EBay.  Around $1700, depending on the seller.

Interesting, $200 Tax Stamps are also for sale on there...

The big bills were primarily for transferring money between banks. With the Federal Reserve the transfer could take place as a book entry making the big bills unnecessary.

They also made 1,000 5,000 and 10,000 dollar bills.

Probably did away with to make it harder to transport large quantities of cash for illegal things.

After working on an armored car for a bit and counting money in the money room to fill the orders for the ATMs and banks, I roll my eyes when I see someone bring 1 million dollars “in small bills” to a meet up in a movie when it’s in a small briefcase. 2 million dollars in 20’s damn near took up the entire counter at the bill counting machine. Lol

I've been intrigued by them and I've wanted to procure one for a while now.

I worked at a liquor store and people were always digging old currency out of mattresses and squandering it away on nips.  I used to take my own cash and swap the bills out of the register.  I have...a few...old notes going back to the 1920s, U.S. Notes, "will pay to the bearer upon demand," etc.  Fun stuff.  At the end of the day, it's still worth what's printed on the bill.  Paying excessive amounts for a $500 note on eBay? No thanks.

I've never seen a $500 either OP.  I have, however, seen a thousand 1,000-dollar bills.  It was at a Reno casino IIRC, and they advertised the display of $1M Cash.  Mid 80s?  It was behind glass of course, and was impressive.

Bought my 1980 Trans Am with 7 $1,000 bills. Still have a $500 in the safe.

If you get one, and are stupid, and turn it into the bank, the Fed shreds it. They had 1,000 dollar bills too

Always wanted one for my collection, but was never able to save $500 without some deal pop up I couldn’t live without.

"The U.S. stopped printing the $500 bill and larger denominations by 1946, but these bills continued circulating until the Federal Reserve decided to recall them in 1969"

So your saying '69 WASN'T several years ago?

In normal American English parlance "several" generally implies numbers under 10.

WWI was not several years ago.

The 2016 election was several years ago.

My great grandfather was an early oilman here in Texas.  Family story is that during much of the 1920s, he was making as much as $10,000 a day.  He carried a roll of $1000 bills in his front pocket.  There's some pretty interesting stories that sound like they came from a novel.  The fortune was mostly wasted in a divorce that went on for years.

Interesting footnote in history but removed because of statist thinking they were saving the world from themselves. I.e. let's reduce the large bills that business or business of Ill repute "might" use and make them more accountable. No joke. Not much different than the $10,000 required reporting rule.
