I've always wanted an express double rifle in .470 or an original .416 Rigby. After owning and hunting with a .338 Win Mag for a number of years, I'd put my personal upper limit at the .375 H&H Mag. That is to say the .375 is the largest caliber I aspire to ever own. I figure that would cover me for African hunting should I ever win the Powerball...lol.

That's an overgrown muzzleloading shotgun.  Would be cool to have as a wallhanger though.

I don't know your financial situation, but I can assure you that you don't have to be wealthy to experience Africa. You can get plains game in South Africa for around $6k and I've even seen tuskless elephants for not much more than that.

what is your definition of a "sporting rifle"?

Something of a classic design, made with the entent to harvest game.

I know a bunch of guys who buy some kind of "going to africa" or "shooting a polar bear" rifle and never do anything with it. If I was just going to own rifles to hunt I doubt I would bother with anything bigger than 308 unless I was making a special trip, THEN I would buy a dangerous game rifle. I just do not see the appeal, to each their own.

this

there is a quantity used to measure recoil called "free recoil energy"

basically, it's just the amount of energy that the rifle would have if it was free to recoil backwards, just like the bullet going one way and the rifle going the other

the free recoil energy is the amount of energy your shoulder has to soak up to stop the rifle

the reason the 30-06 has been so popular for so long is that a hunting weight 30-06 firing a 150 grain bullet develops about 17.5 ft-lbs of free recoil energy

any gun that develops more than about 20 ft-lbs will be uncomfortable for most shooters, make them flinch

those elephant killer type 45-70 loads with 350 and 400 grain bullets will generate free recoil energy of almost 50 ft-lbs.

barrel porting and using a muzzle brake will reduce recoil by a large amount but then you have increased muzzle blast.   If you ever shot a heavy 357 mag load out of a 4 inch barrel and then tried the same load in a 6' barrel you will know the difference that muzzle blast can make

I always look at this from the perspective of passing the "paper plate test" at 25 yards with a handgun and 100 yards with a rifle.  If you cannot pass the paper plate test with 5 shots, you're basically just wasting your time and money.

Probably you wouldn't want a .585 Nyati, then.

In the 1980's, I had a Ruger Number 1 in 375 H&H Magnum, in addition to a Mauser in the same caliber.  I used them for  deer and elk hunting.  I did briefly own a Ruger Bolt Action in 458 Win Mag, but never used it for hunting, just for the thrill of shooting big heavy bullets.

A clone of Jeff Cooper's "Baby" (a custom ZKK-602) in either the original .460 G&A or in .505 Burns; I'm undecided on which cartridge to use.  Apparently CZ offers the pop-up aperture sight as an option now on the CZ-550, whereas they had discontinued it for many years.  Not sure if I'd use one of those new CZ actions or an original ZKK action, either.

Beautiful rifle....a guy I shoot with has one....about 7k invested...

Yep. That's why it will remain a desire to own for now.

It doesn't take nearly that much to get into a Shiloh.  Base rifles start at $1800.

My current big game dream rifle is a classic sporterized Springfield or pre-64 Win. Mod. 70 in .400 Whelen.  Not exceptionally powerful by modern standards but very classy.

Had a precision rifle in .300 RUM. That was plenty for me. 240 gr SMK at something like 2750, iirc.

I'll never be in Africa, so I don't have a desire or need for a big double.

If my dream ever materializes to move to AK, I'll probably invest in a .338 winmag in a model 70 flavor.

Dang, that really bumps up the bolt thrust on that old rifle. Has this been researched for safety?

Given the different areas of each caliber .0745 sq in for the .30 and .1647 sq in for the .458, that is 2.2 times the effective pressure on the bolt, if the cartridges are of the same sammi pressure limit.

It would be cool to have a .50BMG or .338 Lapua or even a 20mm rifle, but I'd probably never shoot them due to the lack of need for one (I don't hunt big game), distances required to make them useful over other guns, and the cost of ammo. The largest rounds I have any interest in are .308/7.62 and 12ga and MAYBE .300 winmag.
