Agreed.
F1 = pinnacle of asphalt racing
WRC = pinnacle of racing on any/every surface, in any kind of weather.

Sébastien Loeb will always be one of the greatest drivers of all time. The ability to adapt and win on all sorts of different surfaces and in all sorts of conditions and weather. Dude started out as a Tarmac specialist, and evolved into the first non-Scandinavian to win the Sweden rally.

As for F1; Schumacher and Senna had some superhuman talent. I remember watching Mika Hakkinen duking it out with Shumacher. Mika's consistency/precision was incredible; lap after lap, within 0.2 seconds of each other. Yet, when Schumacher decided he needed to bring the hammer down, he was consistently beating Mika's laptimes by 2 seconds.

Sterling Moss, hands down.

Won the 1955 Mille Miglia, the most insane and deadly road race in an era of insane and deadly road races. Celebrates his victory like a rockstar with champagne and Italian broads does a bunch of nazi meth leftover from the war, jumps back in the Mercedes and drives the 500ish miles back to Stuttgart. He did some F1 stuff too.

Statistically  Fangio is the best GP driver.

When working with one of Senna's early crew chiefs, It hurt when he told me that Tommy Byrne was faster than Senna but he'll always be my one true racing hero.

It's impossible to name the best driver across the spectrum of four wheel motorsports as each form of racing has unique characteristics that may or may not suit a single drivers natural abilities.

So many different genres you can’t make a blanket “who’s the best” statement.

Senna
Prudhomme
Force
Petty
Kinser
Coughlin
Hines
Jenkins
Ivo

When NASCAR was really "stock cars", that is, cars you could buy as is off the showroom floor, and drive on the street OR the racetrack, it was the most American race ever, and one of the greatest.

Once that stopped, it stopped being relevant.

Stephane Peterhansel.

Edit: Wiki says 14 wins in Dakar. 6 times on motorcycles and  8 in cars/trucks/whatever you want to call it.

I think this is one of those questions that can never be answered.

Many drivers peaked fast but died too soon.

Many drivers only races specific types of cars on very specific circuits.

Other drivers were very talented during a certain time period but would likely be outclassed by modern drivers.

There is just way too many variables.

I'll just go with some of my favorite drivers that drove multiple types of cars successfully.

Like Mark Donohue or Walter Roehrl.

This video came across my YouTube feed and I thought it was pretty interesting. An interviewer asks Tony Stewart who his Mount Rushmore of drivers are. His first two are spot on, but I think I would replace John Force with Jimmy Johnson or Richard Petty and the fourth would be Lewis Hamilon Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher.

I like John Force, but holding a funny car straight for under ten seconds isn't what I consider driving, despite his dominance at it.  Also not really sure NASCAR drivers are the best and wouldn't really give ANY circle track racer credence unless they had experience in road racing too - even if it was running 'shine.

Won NASCAR and Indy Car.  Even ran a few F1 races.

Only driver to win the Indianapolis 500 (four times), the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring

Not a huge fan but I respect what he did.

Well the game is you have to pick the top four.

And I was expecting the Dick Trickle replies much earlier actually. Can’t believe it took two pages.

Surtees won world championships on two and four wheels which is very impressive.

However the driver pictured above is Stirling Moss, one of the most versatile and successful drivers of his era.

Or anyone that runs the Isle of Mann TT wide open.  Skill is one thing but balls is another.  The rare, eclectic combination of the 2 with the ability to be financed into competitive motorsports creates some really amazing people.
