Someone recommended Conception to me, Anyone else seen this one?

I just finished episode 2, and I can say that my life has forever changed.

I made it through one episode, that levitating panda thing was just too irritating and obnoxious.
Sort of reminded me of Retsuko from Aggretsuko, but without the head banging.

I'm a little late to the game on this one...

But Fire Force is spectacular so far (20 eps in).

Plus Aoi Yuuki.

This season has been labeled as a disappointment. I can't completely disagree.

But man there have been some very interesting shows that I have enjoyed for the most part.

One of them is Fable.

Kind of a Golgo 13 type MC. But the show leans into comedy pretty well. At the same time it's very fleshed out and dark as a story.

It's honestly great. I loved the ending of it in the manga.

You don't seem the type to get bent out of shape over fan service. So I doubt the main complaint of the show will effect you.

Yep, this should clear things up.

Had to pick this up as soon as she was introduced when I was watching... plus her being voiced by my favorite VA of all time didn't hurt.

I really liked Fable, it sort of went too many directions at once in the middle, but the last few episodes tied it all together.

My favorite this season was Isekai Shikkaku (No Longer Allowed in Another World).
The MC was certainly a different sort, and it really did have a decent plot.
Also, Cat Girl with just the right amount of zettai ryouiki!

I liked that one too. The MC's personality is what really held that together. Because it would have felt too cookie cutter otherwise. Also that queen at the end 👌

Do you enjoy absurd comedies?

More importantly, do you enjoy absurd comedies featuring magical girl magic and not-actually-a-cat monster cats, inept evil villains with their evil villain organized crime organizations and monster bear monsters, ditzy middle school student magical girl groupies living with their ditzy old-fart-grandpa, set in an odd Japanese seaside town where monster attacks and magical girl battles are part of everyday life?

The first two episodes of Acro Trip (subtitled) have dropped on Crunchyroll.

The quality of the animation sucks, and the storyline is kinda dumb, but the comedic absurdity of it all is all that matters here and makes it worth watching.

The Most Notorious "Talker" Runs the World's Greatest Clan looks like it will be interesting.

Starts off with decent action, ends with a bit of drama and cliff hanger, decent art, and artists to have some good potential story wise.

MC isn't the typical OP and clueless good guy.

Not the longest, but mid length descriptive title. I am looking forward to episode 2

Three that have caught my attention so far are

Chi.: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite (Orb, on the movement of the earth).
This one is based on history in 1500s Europe, and it revolves (pun intended) about the historical fight between the church and science as to the center of the universe and Earths part in it.
Some of you will find it boring, it’s dark, involves inquisition, torture, and burning heretics at the stake , and that was in the first 15 minutes.

The next one is more of the normal type anime in Kimi wa Meido-sama (You are Ms Servant).
A typical high school kids life is disrupted by a strange maid that shows up begging to work for him, after the usual distrust segment he agrees only to find out she was an assassin that was sent to be his servant by a mysterious benefactor.
It’s cute, has a few chuckles, and sort of reminds me of a mix of Maid Is Mysterious and Komi. Can’t Communicate.

Last is Magical Girl type show, the protagonist is an out of work attention to detail almost OCD type girl that ends up helping a Magical Girl and getting hired by the agency that employees the Magical one.
It has possibilities, seems to have lots of action, and at least a halfway decent plot, if it sounds interesting to you it’s called Kabushikigaisha Magi-Lumière (Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc).

I watched it recently. The first story line, at least, I haven't continued with OVAs or anything after.

It's certainly watchable for the story (standard high fantasy, nothing groundbreaking). I can't think of an anime comparison.

What drawings are there are good, but the creators use every possible money-saving animation shortcut possible at every possible opportunity to the point that it was somewhat distracting for me.

I really liked it. It's on my rewatch rotation. Think of it as a much better version of Lord Marksman and Vanadis. It's got some dark moments, and the stakes are real.

I was OK with it - it keeps you guessing, but you do have to haul out your 'suspension of disbelief' skills fairly frequently.

Atri herself is cute, especially when she's protesting violations of 'robot harassment laws', when she uses her comical 'robot punch', etc. You're never quite sure whether she truly has human feelings, or whether it's just her programming that you're seeing - which is a major theme running through the show.

Not sure what to compare it to... it takes place in a post-catastrophe world, which is at least occasionally interesting. It flashes between back-story and the present, gradually revealing pieces of the puzzle, which is also at least moderately interesting.

I'd give it a B grade at most, though.

So far, at least, not finding much to like about the new season.

For example, it is just me, or is "Demon Lord, Retry!" totally unwatchable, incomprehensible garbage?

But I was going to say exactly the same thing about "Let This Grieving Soul Retire".

Wait, isn't that exactly what I was thinking about "The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party, Is, in Fact, the Strongest"?

Yeah, but that was pretty much my reaction to "Negative Positive Angler".

Or "Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister". Or maybe that was "I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History". Same difference.

Am I perhaps expecting too much? Or am I giving up too soon?

About the only ones I've seen so far that seem like they might have any promise are "The Most Notorious "Talker" Runs the World's Greatest Clan" and "Acro Trip".

Yeah, there are still a bunch of others that I haven't seen yet - but by this point I'm feeling a bit jaded and underwhelmed...

This season is following the LNs a little closer with the flashbacks to the "real world". The animation, however, is complete jank, and continuously strives to suck you out of the story. Somebody needs to be beat with a pipe for that shit.

Here's a title that's long and descriptive enough to be an anime:

Tenkosaki: The Neat and Pretty Girl at My New School Is a Childhood Friend of Mine Who I Thought Was a Boy

I doubt it will happen though.
Hasn't even been commercially translated.
Link to fan TL of light novel above.

Summary: country bumpkin in farming village knows no boys and three girls his age.
One girl is his sister, one girl (his dear friend) everybody assumes is a boy, and one girl avoids contact with him. Not much hope for dating there. Not any better for his little sister, one boy is her brother, the other 'boy' (who she has a crush on) is really a girl.

Boy/girl moved away when she and MC were 8. Boy/girl is now a proper HS girl. Model student and class idol.
MC and nee-chan, now first year HS and third year JH, move to the same section of Tokyo that boy/girl went to 7 years ago.
MC hopes he can find his childhood friend there.

Announced a year ago already?
I'd watch that.
I'd mostly ignored rom-coms for a long time, but I mostly enjoyed Uzaki-chan's Super Sugoi Oppai and this year I enjoyed Alya's Russian Flirting and Days with my Stepsister (which isn't even funny).
I gave up on Stepsister early on, but ended up binge watching it after the season ended and then read the LN volumes which followed the Anime (vols 5 and after)

Yep, announcement was just over a year ago, but I haven't come across any details since the announcement.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten and Horimiya are two other good rom-coms.

Not a rom-com, but Ruri Dragon is a manga that seems to have been gaining popularity fairly quickly.  Only 22 manga chapters, so far, and there has apparently already been a deal signed for a licensed English translation.  It's another high school story but focuses on a girl's struggles to find how she 'fits in', with the added complication of her being a 'half' (or whatever the Japanese term is for having parents from different races).  I suspect it would do well as an anime, though more chapters are likely needed before they could do a full season off of it.

That genre is full of minors living alone, or with no parents in the home while the minors are awake.

Alya, Tenkosaki, Stepsister, Angel Next Door...

Amane Fujimiya, a lonely and stoic high school boy, lives alone in an apartment, and the most beautiful girl in school, Mahiru Shiina, lives just next door, to which they are initially unaware of. They have almost never spoken despite being in the same class—until the day he sees her in distress on a rainy day and lends her his umbrella. To return the favor, she offers him help around the house, and before they realize, a relationship slowly begins to blossom as the distance between them closes.

High school students living somewhat on their own (similar to how college students live on their own, here) seems to not be as frowned on in Japan, as it is here.  My understanding is that an adult is expected to have some involvement (signing leases, school paperwork, etc), but it goes a step or two farther than the concept of latchkey kids does here.

When I was 16 I was on my own, went half day to high school and then straight to work.
I sure as heck didn’t have time for all the shenanigans they show in these anime, hell, by the weekend I just wanted to do my laundry and get some sleep.

Some of it seems reasonable, like Masachika in Alya Sometimes Hides her Feelings, his parents are divorced, his father works overseas a lot, so he lived with his paternal grandparents when he was 10 and lived mostly alone in his dad's apartment after he was old enough to be a babysitter.

Some of it is just plain weird, like beautiful girls who are also star athletes and model students living alone because their mothers hate them for being born. I don't think the baby is the one making the choices that lead to birth, so why take it out on them? The Angel Next Door Spoils Me, The Neat and Pretty Girl at My New School both use that excuse. And while it isn't really specified how long she's been alone, The Neat and Pretty Girl seems to imply that she's had the house to herself since she was about 8.

And the MC in The Angel Next Door...three of your so-called friends turned out to be assholes, so sure, go ahead and rent a 1BR apartment several hours away from home, we don't mind paying the rent if it helps you find new friends. But if you don't keep your grades up we're bringing you back home. He's 15 when the show starts, it seems like he moved between 9th and 10th grades and didn't live alone when he was 14 but that's not certain.

It is easier to have 16 year olds say this when they've had their own apartments for at least a year:

From a quick search, the problem (in recent years) seems to actually be worse than what we've been discussing.  Do a search for 'hochigo children' if you want a better idea of how depressing the problem is.

First link I clicked on mentioned a guy who kidnapped a 12 y-o girl, took her to his home 400km away, and when they caught up with him he also had a 15 y-o kidnapping victim who had been his prisoner for several months. It seems his problem might have been that the 12 y-o was instantly missed. Maybe the 15 y-o lived alone?

Then I recalled reading something years ago about sugar babies, and how the sex workers were starting too young so they raised the age of consent from 13 (maybe to 17?).

Takumi's original love interest in Initial D was a sugar baby, made about 200k a month plus free clothes when the boys would work 12hr shifts at the gas station the whole month of August for 150k. Didn't she once ask Takumi if he'd quit his job and spend more time with her if she bought him the car he was saving up for?
I figured if sugar daddy was a single guy with a good job that could easily afford a new E-class Benz, $1500 a month for an exclusive use hooker was a smoking hot deal even in 1995 dollars.
