Unit marked to a Landeswehr unit, would have been a 2nd or 3rd rate unit, but certainly saw service in the Great War. Matching, which is hard to find on a Gew 88. A lot of them were the first to be destroyed to satisfy the treaty requirements.

It's only a carbine if it comes from the carbine region of France, otherwise it's a sparkling short rifle |

Before there were specialists like German Shepherds, Malinois, etc..., there were the original do it all dogs- Airedales. They were one of first breeds used in the more modern era as police and military dogs. In WWI, they were used for all manner of jobs. Message delivery, finding injured troops in no man's land and bringing them medical supplies, guard duty, attack duty, whatever. One Airedale named Jack even earned the British equivalent of the Medal of Honor for delivering a message from a trapped/besieged company that saved untold amounts of troops. He arrived all messed up and died right after delivering it. Pretty cool dogs with quite a story in WWI.

My grandfather somewhere in France. Back row, fifth from the right. He fought in the second battle of the Marne and was one of thirty four men taken prisoner. He spent the remainder of the war in Germany working on someone’s farm.

We were there in 2007. Very humbling. I may have teared up a little walking over Flanders Field.
