Don't know on the distance.
6 with an option for 3 is usually best, but I don't know Shabbona well enough to come up with an option for that without spending some time on google earth. The route we did there last time would work but I don't know if it being deer season will limit access to that area. |
|
[#3]
Okay, I've been informed that going on a hike at Shabbona during deer season would be impolite to the hunters. I'm finding this may be an issue at a lot of state forest preserves. Currently looking for alternate locations.

I’m in. Waterfall Glen would be fine with me again if that works for the rest of the gang. Can start earlier too if people prefer it.

Greene Valley has a ~3 mile loop if we're talking local around here. It's nice for the fact that you can choose to drop weight or drop out when you pass the lot every 3 miles.
That said, thoughts on Starved Rock? We haven't been there yet and it'd make it a little easier if any of the southern/central guys want to come up. Looking at a map, they have a section set aside during hunting season. It wouldn't be too hard to come up with a 3 mile loop in that central red section. Attached File |

Looks like a couple loops around would get the job done. |

Final details, exact meet location and time.
We'll meet at the southern lot, X marks the spot below. 41°19'04.1"N 88°59'34.7"W Attached File We have some guys (and possibly a gal) coming up from the south that have requested a slightly later start time, as they have a bit of a drive. Does 10:00 work for everyone? |

Mattheissen State park is a couple miles down the road from Starved Rock and, IMO is much more scenic. Something to consider in the future.

[#18]
We actually did our very first "official" hike at Mattheissen early in the year. Seems like a lot longer than 10 months ago.
OG ILBB crew at Mattheissen- Attached File The concern for this weekend was interfering with hunters. I couldn't find clear info on where we might hike there without wrecking some hunter's day. |

[#19]
Yeah, I forgot much of the park is open to hunting. I'll be out hunting that weekend myself.
One of these days I'll make a point to get to one of your hikes. |
|
[#20]
Ppffftt, the way deer avoid me while hunting, I'd probably drive the deer to those hunters.

Another nice day to be outside, thanks guys. Great to meet more new people. ??

Nice hike and just as nice being lazy and hanging in the parking lot for a bit.
Looks like we might try to sneak one more in before Christmas if it works out for enough guys. Probably on the weekend of the 19th-20th. |

[#28]
Great time. It was good to get out again, see people that I hadn't seen in awhile and meet some new people.
Looking at our results above, we made great time. But, I can tell that I didn't work off my shepherd's pie from lunch yesterday. |

Quoted: I was thinking...multistate link up? View Quote I'd be up for a little extra travel for that but from what I can see there's not a lot going on in IA, IN or WI. KY/southern IN had a good group going earlier this year but I can't find anything recent. I wasn't aware until I just looked, but it appears MO has a decent group. They just posted about a hike in the GD thread. Great idea, not sure we can make it happen in the next two weeks. You wanna put some feelers out? |

It would have to be Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon for me. But if that works, I'm up for it.
less stairs would be good. |

Silver Springs State Park?
No deer hunting as far as I can tell. |
|
[#45]
I am learning that deer hunting is pretty much everywhere. ):
https://www2.illinois.gov/dnr/hunting/FactSheets/Pages/SilverSprings.aspx Attached File edit...but, looking at the map it seems deer hunting is only in smaller areas. The question would be do we need to avoid the upland game guys as well? |

[#47]
I’m in for Sunday afternoon. Waterfall glen or wherever else that we won’t interfere with hunting.

Works for me. Or springbrook prairie or whatever it's called.
