I do not want to debate the group of disgruntled AU consumers in this thread.

Actually, people like you encourage more complaints. When customers got screwed you call them "disgruntled", "keyboard commando". We just want to get what we paid for, god damnit, is it wrong? You want to get screwed buying something, that's fine, that's you, but not us.

Yet we must endure your incessant whining and crying on the daily as you derail the discussion. I know their shortcomings, yet I continue to purchase from them and assume the risks.  Apparently by your questions and join date you knew who you were buying from and assumed the risk as well..Maybe some of you were not aware, I am sorry for you, lesson learned.  I still do business with Botach and they have a storied history as well. I am sorry for anyone who is unhappy with their purchase from AU.  I sincerely am, but we have all been there with one vendor or another and I assure you it is normally more egregious than a bayonet lug.   Yet you continue to complain and challenge anyone who disagrees because you’re hoping that since this is a Industy/Colt forum that Colt will step in and do something for you.  Most likely outcome is you get to sell it in a few moths or years for more than you paid or you cut it up with a band saw and post the photos for us to see how angry you are at AU.  I would prefer the later.  The second result, which appears to have already been put into motion, is AU is not going to offer us any more Colt products normally only for LE/Mil.  Even though I am disappointed about that, I don’t really blame them.  Their store their rules.  Karen all you want on this thread, all you are doing is ruining a good thing for the rest of us.

It's telling that when I countered the points you made that you then decide that you don't want to debate.  If you read my previous posts, you'd see that I never asked for a refund.  You'd also see that I said much the same as you regarding AU's shortcomings.  Finally, you'd see that I didn't challenge anything other than what you said because I don't agree that AU should get a pass on not delivering what they described simply because they're the only game in town.  Others deserve to know before they gamble.  As for what you said regarding me expecting special treatment from Colt, now you're just making stuff up.  I could have said the same thing regarding your public groveling to AU but chose not to.  If expecting to get what I paid for makes me a Karen in your eyes, that's ok with me.

You could have bought a whole AR for around $699 not just an upper to save yourself some money.

After you called the unhappy customers a bunch of names then you said "I feel your pain", and you are sincerely sorry for them, get the * otta here, I see how sorry you are. We did not derail any discussion, as this is part of the more important discussion. You don't have to worry that we have ruined your chance to buy some "factory second blemished pieces" from AU, just like any business, if there's any money to be made, they will sell it, because they know they have people like you out there that will buy it. It's all about profit, regardless of what they sell and whether if the customers are happy or not, as long as money's rolling it, they will sell. Furthermore, we don't really expect any manufacturer will waste their time to sit here and read this, they are too busy for that. The bottom line is as a consumer; we shouldn't have to feel like we have to take risk every time we make a purchase, especially when they have posted the image of the product that we are supposed to be getting, and that's what we should have gotten, should not be any "risk". If there's any risk involved, any good company would offer return and warranty. For the folks who are happy with this upper, congratulations, you just got yourself a regular AR upper and nothing more. Edited-joker581

Word, I could care less about the lug. Had a spare KAC sight and am familiar with the updated bolt /carrier markings from Colt for some time now. I bought a bolt on lug from RRH if I feel the need for photos with a bayonet attached. But don't feel like taking the birdcage off to install quite yet. The calipers say it will fit snug. I bought both 11.5" and 16" uppers and they are SOLID, although the 16" is my favorite.

I love these offerings from AU and hope to keep seeing them. I know you can't please everyone, that's just business. I can't imagine AU having a huge amount of "pull" with Colt like a DOW purchaser would. I'm happy to have the opportunity to buy one of these regardless. In the end they are tools and if you're dumping money into a collection to get rich down the line, you need a new investment strategy.

I will continue to support and shop at AU for the foreseeable future. They have some unique offerings you won't find anywhere else for the cost. I may pickup another 16" should they become available again. I read AU only received half of their order and more should be available early next year. Fingers crossed they don't raise the price. I'm definitely shooting the crap out of the one I have already..🤙

Great post.
Tell me more about the gas tubes. AU has them for $25 iirc. Isn't it just a carbine length straight gas tube? I see those sold a lot of places for a good bit less. Thx

Yes, gas tubes are usually what fail first under heavy sustained firing. They are just straight carbine tubes. I bought mine along with the tool from AU. A lot of other places have the tubes, but are currently OOS and charge more for shipping usually. Where are you considering purchasing them from?

I wonder if Black River Tactical would make a custom run of 6940 straight tubes? Would love a dedicated suppressor tuned one.

I am not actively looking to buy one. I did buy the tool at the time of the uppers but didnt think about a spare tube. I guess I just wanted to confirm the size/shape for if I ever do need another or to buy a spare I know theres nothing special about it...just straight carbine gas tube. I think Wilson Combat might offer straight tubes. Thx

If you didn't want to debate, you should have kept your uneducated mouth closed and not posted denigrating other buyers with legitimate complaints. Just because you and some others are willing to let daddy AU/Colt walk all over you when they are in the wrong without complaining doesn't mean the rest of us are. Bret is 100% right and your entire way of thinking is illogical. AU has been a shady outfit for a long time now misrepresenting and often lying about the legitimacy of the Colt products they sell. Frankly, they deserve every chargeback and all the hate they are getting for this. It's clear you have no ability to be objective on the subject just because you seem blindly infatuated by Colt/AU. Boo hoo about "ruining a good thing for the rest of us", this was never a good thing. Just a business arrangement out of necessity, we were forced to deal with AU and have had consistent problems with for years now. Take off the rose tinted glasses and the makeup

No one is expecting Colt/AU to step in and do anything at this point, we know they are useless. We want to warn any prospective buyer even remotely willing to consider buying from Colt/AU to steer clear until they fix their act. Colt is already a dying brand, no significant US military contracts and no significant technological advancements to speak of in the last 15 years. Even the IAR is old technology at this point and HK does it better if we are comparing. Realistically, an M4A1 Socom can do 80-90% of what the IAR can do so for most people/militaries (and for a lot cheaper than the IAR, with less proprietary parts, etc), why should anyone even care about the IAR? Colt/AU should be thankful we are even buying this

[Last Edit: DiemacoLMG][Edited] [#17]
Okay so its clear we have some "bozos" here as Rust707 so kindly put it who will just take any crap they get from AU/Colt no matter how wrong they are (and never complain so at least the business knows it can be an issue). No point in wasting time with these . They never have anything logical to say, always just want to shill for AU/Colt. You can like a brand/business and still hold them accountable when they are wrong.

For the rest of the normal people with principles/morals who want to return but are being given a hard time: If you didn't already take a screenshot of the item page before it was changed by AU, I have the screenshot of item page before it was changed. If anyone needs this to move forward with their chargeback/dispute with their bank against AU, please let me know and I will be happy to forward it to you.  Was going to post it here but doesn't look to be a way to upload images directly. It's basically a guaranteed win if you dispute/chargeback this. Only issue is you will be forced to return the upper so make sure you are done with it.

It is not "AU's business so AU's rules". That's not how business works in America. AU has an obligation to accept these back and give a full refund if the buyer chooses because the item was significantly different than advertised. If they don't comply and give a full refund including shipping both ways, they should be prepared to get hit with a wave of chargebacks

The Colt IAR shoots like a regular AR, most people bought it for historical purposes, therefore, any little part that has been omitted from the original spec is unacceptable. Except for a few AU/Colt bootlickers are happy with whatever they are being fed.

Blame AU/Colt for being the that they are, not us. We spent good money for this crap from them.

Also what pics/info are you looking for? Build pics? The builds with the 16" IAR uppers lacking bayonet lugs basically all look wrong. Like some animal that has had its manhood taken away . The 11.5 IAR builds look great!

If you are looking for real info, Chris over at Small Arms Solutions does some great videos on the IAR. That's where I learned about the fact that these are only a little bit better (maybe 10-15%) than standard M4A1 Socom uppers. A cool concept but realistically speaking, the IAR is not practical and not a good replacement for our current standard issue rifles/LMGs.

The IAR platform is heavy, expensive to produce compared to standard ARs, comes with proprietary parts which make maintenance a lot more difficult, it does not have the ability to provide suppressing fire like a belt fed without overheating, no quick barrel changes (need proprietary part to even remove the barrel), limited magazine capacity, fires from closed bolt so higher chances of a cook off should you use it how its intended. I could go on but you get the point. Hopefully someone does a GoldenWebb style burndown of the 11.5 IAR and 16" version as well. Would like to see how far these will go when pushed to their limit compared to the IAR uppers that Cody is making over at Red Right Hand. I suspect that Cody's IAR rendition will be just as good, if not better, considering Colt's lack in quality these days. That would be crazy to me considering RRH is basically a one man outfit and Colt is such a huge company/well known brand yet they can't seem to get things right.

Today I fired 240 rounds with an H2 buffer. Rifle shot great, and was throwing brass in a nice pile about 330 or so. Did a hasty 25M zero, and then was shooting about 200M with a few mags. I REALLY like the EOtech/5x magnifier setup on this. The VFG is great for shooting while standing, and it did not get very hot!

I like this more than I thought I would, and feel it compliments my M4A1s and Block 2 nicely. If these pop up again, I would not hesitate. Only other things I will be doing is throwing a sling on at some point, and probably a different pistol grip. Otherwise, this will be enjoyed as is.

Here is a link to 3 pics I took (nothing fancy but it does looks nice ).

Thank you for sharing this info about the gas tubes, was looking for it. Pretty disappointing to hear that these are just straight carbine tubes being used for something that is supposed to be capable of sustained suppressive fire. In my mind, it's another reason why the Colt IAR was doomed to fail from the beginning. Why they wouldn't make a specialized, thicker gas tube like the one on the Diemaco LSW/LMG is beyond me. If they were going for parts compatibility with ARs, they already lost that battle in a lot of aspects.

Hey look! IAR!

Somehting relevant to this thread cough cough

This is a prototype gen 1 model. I didn’t realize that when I put it on. It has the patent forged into the upper and an unmarked barrel.

Slapped 100rd surefire and worked like a charm! I do have a colt hydraulic buffer in this one though so didn’t shoot as fast.

The upper shoots great and is very accurate. The dual use heat sync helps the accuracy and the heat BUT on full auto, the lower handgaurd still gets very hot. Hot enough that you need that grip as the whole thing is aluminum. Something you don’t worry about on plastic or similiar heat shield handguards.

Definitely. The IAR is actually rated for about the same continuous effective fire rate as the M249 and comes in at almost half the weight. Now true you can swap barrels on a M249 and keep firing, but it's much heavier and less maneuverable.

Here is some information from an article written by Small arms review. It mentions some similarities and differences between the two. I think the IAR would be a very effective alternative to the SAW and should have won the contract it was designed for..

""The overall length of the IAR is 36.75 inches with the stock extended and 33.50 inches closed compared to the 41 inch long SAW. The weight of the IAR is a light 9 lbs 8.oz compared to the 17 pound M249 SAW. The cycle rate of the IAR is 700 to 1000 rounds per minute which is comparable to the M249 SAW. With the IAR’s 16.1 inch barrel, the muzzle velocity with M855 Ball ammunition is 2920 feet per second compared to the 21 inch barrel of the M249 SAW with a muzzle velocity of 3000 feet per second.."

The 100 rd isn’t made anymore but I’ve only ever loaded it up to capacity 5 times and never had an issue feeding.

Half way through the spring tension changes and you can hear the fire rate change which is neat

As far as I know, both magazines are discontinued. After seeing the Op's original post with the 100-round magazine, I realized I was missing a SF mag in my collection. The 60-round mags are available on GunBroker, and there's one 100-round mag listed for an insanely high price. I managed to grab the last 60-round mag I could find that was somewhat close to original MSRP. It’s still pricey, but if you compare it to a 60-round Magpul drum, it’s not too far off.

I also read that they redesigned the 60-round mags (at least) in 2016, and they were good to go after that. Unfortunately, I realized this after I already bought mine, and the auction photo showed a manufacturer date of 2013. I think the seller just used one photo for the multiple mags he was selling, so my guess is that he probably bought them around the same time. Fingers crossed it works out!

Nice grab. I definitely need some D60's in the collection. Would like a Surefire, but the drum seems like it will fit better shooting of the Bipod. It looks to be the same length as a 30rd mag...Haven't seen too many complaints about the Magpul D60 either, anyone have negative experience with them?

I bought one of the D60's when they first came out and the only issue I had was that it would only lock the bolt back in my Colt lowers.  In two of my LMT lowers and one Nodak lower it functioned perfectly but would not lock back on empty.  On all three of my  Colts it locked back fine.  Visibly I couldn't see why.  All of my lowers functioned perfectly with standard GI mags or 30 round P Mags.

I keep meaning to buy a new one and see how it works.

I keep meaning to buy a new one and see how it works.

mine just arrived from colt parts.com but shipped from au out of the same building. mine has seen use and had brass rub marks on ejection port that rubbed off. same with carrier marked c mpc. bolt reads mp but on closer inspection reads mpc as usual. just hard to read. did you guys all get used demo uppers or mostly brand new?

You're sure its a demo upper and that isn't from test firing?

mine just arrived demo used not new production like you describe. ive seen pics a member here posted within a year or so ago of 11.5'' colt iar in use in mexico and info they bought a bunch so its worth looking into as thats likely why these popped up in a massive batch but with no lugs.

its a big recent contract over run again like always.

correct. mine has a knick in the aluminum radiator that needs hit with cold blue and some faint wear on top of sight maybe starting in ill have to look at it again. if i had to guess from the amount of brass on ejection port and bottom of carrier it ran maybe 1 or 2 mags not a bunch. 3 mags at most. has some rub marks on hand guard rails high edges. thats why i asked are you guys seeing new or used mostly?

heres a link to another similar colt iar thread we had from months ago that got archived in case no one here linked it yet. https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/IAR-Thread/118-789626/?

au/coltparts.com now has just 34 uppers left in the 11.5'' with 16'' still listed as sold out in case anyone needs to order. that means they sold about 50 uppers in the time it took my upper to arrive so eta on out of stock maybe 1 week or less.

I don't have one of these uppers but Colt test fires their rifles with a full 30 round mag for function testing at the factory. They also commonly come with dings and scratches from handling.

I wouldn't necessarily assume yours was a demo
