It was yet another week of weather for me. I didn't bother to check in here, I was kind of pissed. S9+10 lightning and local as well. The stuff 20 miles south of here was pretty wicked.
9.3 inches of rain in May, and 6.2 inches for June. It's getting old. |

So,, tonight was a good reminder for me to slow down and take some time to talk with new Amateur radio operators. Wes from Iowa heard us on and put out his call a few times, after relaying him into the net, I thought you dummy, that's no way to introduce a new ham to the hobby. After Chris closed the net I gave Wes a call an he was still on frequency! We had a nice 15 minute long QSO and talked about station equipment, he was on a homemade 40 meter loop that was making a good trip to Nebraska with his 100 watts, he must have it figured out reasonably well since I turned down to 100 watts a bout halfway through the QSO and he was still able to copy 100%. It was a good reminder to be inviting, and welcoming to the newer operators, otherwise we aren't going to have anyone to talk to when the older ham operators pass on.

He's a newer ham and I was his first Alaska contact. I was the first Alaska contact for another newer ham as well. I made 17 15m contacts in about half an hour. I haven't done that much on 15m since the spring.. |

I had a work call right after the net closed so I wasn't able to stick around. Even with the static crashes I has able to copy all of the stations checking in at least 90%.
Would there be any interest in having a separate ARFCOM net called out of Nebraska on a different night to try and reach members out west? |

I can usually hear you pretty well, even when conditions are not great. Obviously, I am not out west, but would try to check in so that if any western people want MA in their log book, I could make some quick QSOs or at least offer signal strength readings. |

Including the guys out West would be awesome, the time difference has been a killer. I assume you guys will need to start a net around 1800 or 1900 Pacific to make it workable. I'll join in when I can. Does 40m work well from NE to CA/WA? My 40m coverage on SSB stops around TX and CO.

I'll start a thread later tonight looking for opinions on this. The time and date will likely be the hardest part to sort out to get the most check-ins and for me to have time to do it. I should be able to get Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. I don't think I would get California, Oregon, or Washington on 40 unless the net was later.
Edit: Might even think about running the net on the same frequency, immediately following the regular net. If the regular net ran 30-60 minutes the time would be about right for an "ARFCOM West" net. |
