Didn't get anything done today. Went to Home Depot to get some misc stuff and ordered some more lumber for the gable ends and a few little things.

Think you will get it done before a critter moves in underneath? Looks like prime real estate.

The only thing I'm mildly concerned about is squirrels or shrews tearing into the exposed pink hard foam insulation from underneath. I'm hoping its hard and toxic enough that they're not into it. We'll see.

Finally quit raining at about 7pm tonight. My son and I got the second top plate on, ridge poles and ridge beam. I wanted to test fit a rafter and I think it’ll work. Hopefully get some rafters up tomorrow afternoon.

Love the shed project!

For me it was ants in the foam!

My garage has been up 7-8 years now.  The only foam in the building is in the bay with the electrical service entrance and breaker box.  I was doing yard work last week and was driving around the garage and notice blue dust by the concrete.  Ah shit I says to myself as I recognized the color.

I pulled the interior plywood wall off ( about a dozen sheet rock screws holding it on) and found they were tunneling in the foam and even got the blue frass (their tunneling dunnnage) inside the breaker box.   Fortunately it was tiny ants not carpenter ants.  I hit it with the shopvac and dusted everything inside and out with powdered pesticide.  screwed the plywood back on after a few days making sure the bastards were dead.

Maybe up armoring your floor underside with tin sheeting?

Around here mice and maybe skunks would be in to your foam eventually.

You planning on putting 240v in that shack as well or only going to be 120v?

Indeed best thing I ever did was running a 240v sub panel in the shack.

Got one sub fascia on last night. Good feeling. Starting in on some blocking and stuff that is easier to do with the lid off. Supposed to rain tomorrow, but supposed to be nice this weekend and next week. Should have the roof on next week hopefully.

Don’t forget to insulate your blind corners and put in your nailers before you put on your sheathing.

Got all the ceiling joists up and rafter blocking. I’d start the roof today, but supposed to rain tomorrow.

Wall sheathing is done except the gable ends and starting on the roof sheathing this afternoon. If all goes well I’ll complete the roof sheathing today and get the roofing underlayment on then I won’t have to tarp anymore.

Are you using tongue and groove or clips on the roof sheeting?

H clips. Not really needed with a metal roof, but it makes it easy to keep the spacing even.

I’m going to power the shack with a 50A RV cord. Outlet box came in for that on Friday and electrician buddy is going to come connect it this week, so I got all prepped for that.

Looking good man. My dad used a burried Extension cord for years to power lights in his shed because they would not grant him a permit to have it permanently wired for some reason. So he sunk conduit in the ground and had an extension cord running into the garage. Do not see why that will not work. Not sure about storms in AK as far as lighning goes. But the fact that you can disconnect all of the connections is pretty neat.

I have a 100a service in my shed and have a 50a RV plug that I use to run my welder, plug in my trailer or power my 240v mill.

Looking good!  Have you thought about putting an industrial freq drive filter on the electric supply?  Doing this virtually eliminates RFI issues in the station particularly if you are running power.

I run the 20 amp on the 120 volt feed to my office and the 30 amp on the 240 volt feed.  The link below should be sorted for single phase.

EMI Drive Filters

Unexpected rain day yesterday, so I picked up the insulation on clearance at Lowe’s. This is mostly a Home Depot build, but I was able to save about $500 on the insulation. I think Owen’s Corning just costs more.

Didn’t get much else done in the rain, but I didn’t nail up the outlet boxes and drilled all the holes. Rough in wiring should go quick now.

Looking good.

I don't mean to but in but are you drywalling the inside? I ask because it looks like you electrical boxes are flush with the studs. I think they're supposed to stick out the thickness of the drywall.

Look carefully at the boxes. They do stick out. There is some kind of black plastic cover.

They protrude about 3/8” past the gasketed flange. Interior walls are going to be plywood. I’ll probably have to get some box extenders.

Do it! I'm gonna be about $15k into it. Probably be $10k or less in the lower 48 though. My goal is 2 months of evenings and weekends. Halfway point is on Tuesday, started August 3rd.

I am also REALLY enjoying this thread.  I don't need to build a new shack, but I really like seeing your design and thought processes  and the great pictures you are taking to document the build.  Even though I don't need to build one, as an old engineer it is great to see you go through the steps.  Looking forward to the electrical and coax cable routing.

What are those white panels with the round depressions in them stapled to the roof sheathing?

raft vent panels used to channel air across the bottom of the roof from the soffit vents to the ridge vent and then you put insulation under them, otherwise the insulation blocks the flow of air and moisture and heat can collect under the roof. Used for when you don't have an attic and the ceiling of the room is the roof.
Link Posted: 9/8/2024 3:31:26 PM EDT
[#48]
Yup, they prevent the ceiling insulation from pressing against the roof which will negate critical eve airflow to maintain a cold attic.
