Just looked it up.  Wiki lists it as 500-600 rpm.  You know you are a gun nut when you can judge that by ear.

Most annoying magazine to load, and biggest barrel shroud/shoulder-thing-that-goes-up in existence.

Is that barrel shroud water filled or what? Guessing it is a cooling mechanism of some sort. And how deep is the magazine stacked? 2 or 3 rounds?

I know, Google is my friend. But in the spirit of the ole' interweb forums thought I would ask. Never think about it until I see one.

Water-cooled barrel. I think there were 2-deep and 4-deep magazines.

I agree. That song was played at my wedding..... Just wish I had some machine gun fire in the background or to shoot at my wedding.

Pachabels canon or something like that.... I can't spell and the iPhone won't correct it.

Did a quick IMFDB search and a Wiki search and discovered that the US Navy and Marines had Lewis gun chambered in .30-06 (as opposed to the British .303) during the interwar period (1920s and 1930s).

The above pictured scene fromt he movie "The Sand Pebbles" shows a very nice Lewis Gun on the deck of the US Navy Gunboat San Pablo during their breakout from thew Chinese blockade.

God movie; plus it had some good Browning BAR pr0n in it too.

Barrels get hot. Machine guns barrels getting really hot. Closed bolt, round in chamber, hot barrel, cook offs happen. Fire from an open bolt and the round only goes into the chamber when it is going to be fired any way. But, you already knew that, right?

I believe that large shroud is designed to suck in air to cool the barrel more quickly than simply allowing the heat to dissipate into the air.
