If you do, what do you use it for? Post photos of your setups.

*Please do not turn this into a "CB's are obsolete, HAM radios are better" thread*

I've used mine to listen in on others when I don't feel like listening to the radio. I've also used it to figure out why traffic was backed up and to get a location on cops sitting on side of the interstate (not that I was speeding or anything

). It's only been installed for a few months. I have a new one coming this week because this one stopped transmitting:

I did a while back. I have a 2m and HF rig in there now. I would like to put a CB in as well to have all bases covered. Back in the days before the WWW the CB helped out tremendously with traffic and navigation.

I have a Uniden PC122XL, AM/single-sideband, and a Wilson 1000 magnetic mount antenna. It's usually not in the truck, just occasionally. It's good for catching some conversations when I'm up in the hills. It's gotten me around a couple of traffic jams before. My brother has one in his truck, but we live too far apart for them to reach, so I don't keep it in the truck all the time.

I used it and another one when we moved across the country. I put one in my wife's car and another one in the moving van that I drove. The conversation made the drive across the country a lot more fun, and it wasn't a panic situation if we got separated. She often scouted ahead and found places to pull over for lunch or dinner and let me know before I got there.

I used to, before ham radio. I'll put one in the car again for road trips. A CB is better for traffic info and speed traps like you mentioned. I use some little Uniden CB and a Larsen antenna.

With cell phones so cheap CB is (almost) dead. Sorry to say. I had alot of fun on there in the late 80's.

I have one in my trail rig, as do most of the people I offroad with.

Only time I ever use it, antenna isn't even connected unless I am on the trails (truck won't fit in garage with it).
Been using FRS radios a lot more for offroading as you can just toss one to a non cb equipped truck and they can join in.

The last time I turned the CB on all I heard was some trucker trying to bum smokes from anyone that would meet him at a truck stop. Beyond that it was quiet.

I use to have one about 15 years ago. My friends and i used it to communicate during drives together. i had it on my 1993 Eclipse GSX. I just don't see a need for one anymore, cell phones with unlimited plans and frs radios are much more portable and require no permanent setup.

Once you buy it, a CB doesn't cost anything to talk. And there are a lot of places that don't have any cell signal.

A cell phone is for making a phone call. A CB is for lots of other talking. Each is better than the other for certain things and one doesn't make the other obsolete.

When I was driving through the south every few miles I'd hear some cute sounding young ladies asking truckers to come by and use "her" washout service.
All across the country, about every 40 miles. Nobody even bothered to insult them. Then you'd hear the lot lizards asking for "friends" to come visit. Everyone insulted them.

Drive through many parts of the rural Southwest and try to get cel service. You might rethink your obsolete CB thoughts.

I keep an old Cobra 29LTD in the truck, usually it's pretty quiet, but its fun on roadtrips. I loose cell coverage out here in areas as well, so in an emergency having something to go to is nice. People do monitor, I still see antennas and I know some of the Sheriffs out here monitor it as well.

I also recently stuffed a little cobra (i think a 25) I got from a buddy into the ford focus the better half drives. With a Lil Wil magnetic antenna she gets good range out of it, and doesn't always have to have it on the car depending where she is. As was mentioned it's great when we go places in multiple vehicles and again is another emergency form of communication.

A ham license is on my list of things to do, and was one of the things that led me to AR15.com in the first place.

I live near a freeway. I don't hear CB use much but on the weekends I do hear FRS radio use. Caravaning people, biker groups with the radios mounted inside their helmets, kids with Dad's camping radio set, motels calling the maids, landscapers calling the grounds keepers. Wish they made a mobile FRS unit that could be mounted in a car not just the hand helds. They did but it's long out of production and when you can find one now it's $$$.

On weekends I can listen to cb'ers doing the dx cb thing...I have heard people talking from Hawai to Ontario in channel 38 on ssb and im in central fl...of course the conversations are typically abut the weather and wht rig /antenna they are using...cool that the capability is within the radio thou.

I have a small Midland in my Jeep with a 4' Firestik. I use it on trail runs, not much CB traffic on a daily basis. How useful is a ham setup in the vehicle ?
