http://science.howstuffworks.com/zoology/marine-life/400-pound-lobster.htm

Listening to NPR yesterday where they were talking about cell reproduction and how we as humans have a biological limit on our cells duplicating (each cell duplicates 50 times then dies). Over time our DNA is damaged and we slowly die.

However Lobsters seem to have a unique enzyme that repairs this DNA and they age so slowly that science current science can not even measure it and there is debate as to whether they do actually age at all. Some believe that if it were

not for injury, disease or capture, that they would essentially live forever. Lobsters also seem to get larger the older they get, so far the record is a 50 lb lobster.

32 lb lobster.

Aren't they cute.

11 lb lobster

22 lb Lobster

Lobster people!

Wonder how soon biologists will figure out how to use this on other species? And could it lead toward disease cures?

Now this is why we need full auto M16s with a 100rd drum magazine loaded with HEIAP, fucking 500 year old 2 ton lobsters.

Edit: We also need LAWs and AT-4s to deal with that threat.

Some of the Navy boys that used to come through my former employer for training used to talk about a missile range off the northern coast of Greenland that had been off limits to fishermen for over 60 years. They talked about pulling lobsters out of there that were so big they couldn't reach around the thorax with both arms to clasp hands in the middle. They estimated that some of those bugs were well older than our country.

They swore that the old ones were just as edible as the younger ones if you knew how to cook them.

The aquarium in Seaside, OR used to have a lobster that was supposed to be the oldest one in captivity. It was really big....like 50 lbs big.

Some fucker broke in and stole it. He dropped it and cracked it's shell...kilt it.

They are also at a peak for harvesting with large colonies and nice low $$ at the counter! Good for the consumer, sucks for those who fish it !

Seriously tho, good current prices... We had 5 lbs of GREAT king crab for Christmas dinner and still could afford meat and booze to go with

Probably could have had some good tails for the same cost!

Maybe, so far it only has to do with cell replication. When they looked at worms there were DNA proteins, one tells your cells to die and the other keeps them young. By inhibiting the "grim reaper" protein they were able to double the lifespan of these worms and believe you could go ever further then that. The already indentified a enzyme that could be used to replenish the cells reproduction time clock indefinitely, but this enzyme also causes cancer.....soooo

Lobsters "live forever" because their cells are forever reproducing and do not die (after 50 reproductions like they in humans) and damage DNA. Not really sure it would be a cure for diseases but you never know.

There was another study where lobsters were territorial...in the traps. Those that were caught would fight those that tried to get in. The study was done to determine why they never seemed to get "over fished".

How do you cook a 50lb lobster? that is an awful big pot. Superheat your hot tub?

There's probably lobsters so big we don't see them because they can't fit in the pots.
