As posted earlier, there were a bunch of contenders for the MRAP program.

~60 of the Golans were repurposed for DHS.

Some other brands went to other agencies.

Navistar got the contract for the 27xx for the .mil

I find it pretty amusing that the members of this forum and others like it are the only reason they are buying these things

Eh, not really.

What everyone fails to realize is that the Humvee was outdated and needed replacing, and the military needed vehicles for Iraq and Afghanistan. The DHS and like organizations just piggybacked because they wanted vehicles like them and the Humvee was never "designed" to be armored the way it is today.

Bottom line, it was either these vehicles that were already being bought in bulk, or buy others and spend more money.

People just fill themselves full of derp

So you think these vehicles were cheaper than a Ford Explorer or a Crown Vic (bought in bulk through GSA)?

Or the "free" ones that Zero already bought with stimulus dollars to give to the various agencies?

They don't need armored vehicles.

Never said they needed them. They're probably analyzing for worst case scenarios (I'm trying to go the non-tinfoil hat route right now). No idea what those would be other than response to a Homeland threat on a larger magnitude that would allow them to respond.

DHS encompasses a lot more organizations these days, including ICE and the Coast Guard. I'm not justifying their purchase or choice of vehicle, only saying there might be reasons and we shouldn't go full derp.

Can't find the actual purchase order online but;

Apparently it cost $21M [that wasn't cut] from the Pentagon budget to rebuild suspensions & repaint 2,717 MRAPS for DHS/ICE.

(Not to mention whatever it cost to buy the Army another 2,717 replacement MRAPS.)

So what kind of gas mileage do Zero's new green vehicles get when DHS/ICE is driving around all day not arresting illegals?

I've seen it elsewhere that 2700 of those were for the Marines, DHS apparently got 16.

The problem is, I'm not the "tin foil hat" type but this kind of thing stinks like hell.  Are they going to use them to protect the boarders...no.  Are they going to use them to combat gangs... no.  Well then who the hell are they planning to pick a fight with?

And this is where I agree with you.

I don't discount the actual purchase of the vehicles, but I would like to know their use, whether it is training, supplementing FBI HRT and DEA FAST, or Border Patrol. But, FBI and DEA fall under DOJ, so that's obviously not it.
Wasn't trying to pick a fight, just trying to play a little devils advocate and get people to think.

people are thinking that's why they are saying WTF? What the hell is going on here? I can't see any reason why a domestic agency need an armored vehicle. Unless they need it to dominate something, like a small town or doing cordon a sweep operations or like the border etc...  Couple this this the NDAA the drone crap now Patriot act FISA documents he has me "thinking: that it all adds up to a steaming pile of bad stuff. I never agreed with the GWOT, the patriot act any of it because I KNEW crap like this would occur.

Bad times they are here.

Man,  I am so glad we talking about this.

Also, did you guys hear that DHS just bought another 1,700,000,000,000,000 rounds of ammo? Who exactly do they plan on going to war with?

7 page thread dupe IIRC assuming it didn't get locked.  Lot of people wondering why cops need mine/IED proof vehicles.

I could tell you EXACTLY why, if you REALLY want to know.

I'd probably be violating the CoC to tell you though.
