The XTM is a good choice for durability, but it's a bit heavier than the Magpul XT.
With rail covers, you're always balancing weight vs. durability. KAC, Magpul XTM, and Tango Down rail panels are tough, protect your hand, and last forever... but they are all about the same weight. The Magpul XT is lightweight, but does wear out if you keep moving em around |

Prefer the Tango down or the KAC. Both offer good gripping surface. Have had some small issues with the KAC locking clip not seating on some rails though. Never had any issues at all with the TDs'.

WalMart has BlackHawk covers, fairly cheap. Also, check with Amazon, they are fronting for sellers with some good prices on gun stuff.

I have three types on a single rifle...Troy, KAC and Larue clips.
On another rifle, I have nothing but Troy...I think those are the shizznit. Good rails, light, thin VERY affordable. I will replace all of them with Troy.

I have a combination of XTM and ladder covers on my gun.
The ladder covers are surprisingly nice. Obviously very slim, and also quite grippy. They do a good job of eliminating the sharp edges - which is really important to me. |

I ditched my KAC rail covers for tango down scar panels
They have more grip and seem to be a slightly lower profile. |

I prefer ladders or kac rail covers or a combo of both. All depends on the width of the rail. If its too wide, pretty much any rail panel will make it cumbersome. I have an xtm handstop kit. Pretty good design, but if you ever want to pull the panels you'll be at it for a while. They are not easy to get apart.

Went back to the index clips and am sticking with them. The ladder style just filled the gaps and left the sharp edges. Plus I'm a whore for most things LaRue. |

Tango Down Scars are very nice covers and not bulky at all in my opinion.
I use one at 9 and 3 o'clock with ladders at 12 and 6.  |

I have the Troy rail covers and they are nice. The locking clips can be a PITA but the panels don't budge once set and are very grippy.

How many clips does it take to fill up one carbine length rail? i'd have to count them but i bought the carbine rail kit and have a lot left over after adding my afg and IR laser. basically 1 clip = 1 notch on the rail. so how ever many notches you have is the number of clips. not the best pics but here you go...
