One of my favorite things to have done to the uninitiated to blow there minds was, when passing through Norfolk, to drive out onto the berth and park beside a carrier when they were ported.

Sadly, it can't be done any more, but it sure was fun to do for for those who had never been up close.

I still drive by as close to the base as possible with my kids

Ok I'm back. I've got questions...
What's the deal with all the ships anchored together up the James River west of Norfolk? What kind of ships are they? What are they doing there? Can Arfcom procure one?
Also... Are there designated sub pens in Norfolk or do they just dock in the same places as the rest of the ships? I like seeing the subs but just need to know where to look.

1.  That is the Ghost Fleet
1.A  Everything is for sale.  If you have to ask prices, you probably cannot afford.

2.  There are sub docks in Norfolk.  They look the same to me as regular docks, but I cant get too close!!  The docks are organized- the same types of vessels park near each other and seem to be at consistent areas.

It has to be experienced in person.

When boot SN FiveSpeedF150 was passing through Norfolk I figured I'd go check out a carrier just to see one in person. I was walking along the pier trying to figure out where the damn things were. Then... I looked up.

Pretty much. LVL II Coxswain nav course actually takes you through that channel. To get the nav right you need to maintain your speed... waves be damned. It can make for a bumpy ride.

I didn't know they had started working on her over there. I figured with sequestration she was just sitting there waiting to go to NNSY. I've been waiting to see her show up. Looks like they took all the radar and antennas down.
